[highlight]A little about me[/highlight] I'm a ~2000 rated player atm(2100 peak), although I've taken hiatus from solo queue for quite awhile now. Even though I'm not known for my Olaf, I've somewhat recently picked him up in normals and premades and really loved him [highlight]About Olaf[/highlight] Olaf is a very overlooked top lane bruiser. With the recent buffs to his [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png], he's very strong. He also wins a ton of match ups, and beats characters that a lot of other bruisers can't because his true damage and burst([imgsmall=champ/irelia.png] as an example) [highlight]Pros[/highlight] [.]Has true damage([imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png]) [.]Can't be CC'd, slowed, or suppressed during [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png] [.]Can break CCs and suppresses with [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png] [.]Good base damage on [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] and [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] [.]Perma ranged slow with [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] [.]Free attack speed([imgsmall=skills/olaf/p.png]) and sustain([imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png]) [.]Wins a lot of match ups [.]Crazy fun with some CDR and speed boosts([imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png], [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png]) [highlight]Cons[/highlight] [.]Can be kited pretty hard, especially when [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png] is down(this is why I get [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png]) [.][imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] is pretty hard to aim [.]Way too many strong items to choose from [.]Pretty susceptible to ganks pre-6 [.]Needs a strong team to be able to rush squishies UPDATE 3/29/12: New item, Maw of Malmortius. It's extremely strong on Olaf. I'll update the build as I test more, but it's great in place of FoN. Hexdrinker makes a good laning item against AP

[title]Against AD[/title] [imgext=http://i.imgur.com/TSVAK.jpg] I feel that a combination of armor pen and flat AD are best for Olaf. I run about a half and half mix. Armor pen are generally a bit better against champions, but you need flat AD for last hitting. Also, [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] has a 1.0 +AD scale making flat AD runes not so bad anyways. Movement speed quints could possibly be best-in-slot on either page, but they will probably gimp your laning phase a little bit(less burst damage) Lifesteal quints may also be best-in-slot, but I strive for DPS over sustain with my rune choices

[title][img=skills/olaf/p.png] Passive: Berzerker Rage[/title] [number]For each 1% of health missing, Olaf's attack speed is increased by 1%.[/number] [highlight]Explanation:[/highlight] A very strong DPS passive. Also makes it to where you don't need to build any attack speed [title][img=skills/olaf/q.png] Q: Undertow[/title] [number]Olaf throws an axe to a target location, dealing 80/125/170/215/260 physical damage plus 100% of his bonus attack damage to units it passes through and slowing them by 16/22/28/34/40% for 2.5 seconds. If Olaf picks up the axe, the ability's cooldown is reduced by 4.5 seconds. Cooldown 8 seconds Cost 55/60/65/70/75 mana Range 1000[/number] [highlight]Explanation:[/highlight] An amazing long range slow. Great for chasing. Make sure you throw this through the enemy, but still on the path of where you will be headed(if chasing). With high CDR you can throw and pick up axes immediately. This can sort of destroy targets if they're standing still or hardly moving(more on this in chapter 9). Max this second. You can also max it first if you are having a tough time in lane and want to farm easier, and/or want to slow harder for escaping [title][img=skills/olaf/w.png] W: Vicious Strikes[/title] [number]For 6 seconds, Olaf's attack damage is increased by 7/14/21/28/35 base damage plus 1% of his max health. While active, Olaf gains 9/12/15/18/21% lifesteal and spell vamp. Cooldown 12 seconds Cost 40/45/50/55/60 mana Range 700[/number] [highlight]Explanation:[/highlight] A mediocre buff that gives some AD and sustain. The spell vamp component is very nice in conjunction with [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png]. Max this last [title][img=skills/olaf/e.png] E: Reckless Swing[/title] [number]Olaf deals 100/160/220/280/340 true damage to his target and inflicts 40/64/88/112/136 true damage to himself. Cooldown 8/7/6/5/4 seconds Cost 40/64/88/112/136 health Range 325[/number] [highlight]Explanation:[/highlight] One of the best single target nukes early game. This skill is amazing in lane. Although it doesn't scale with AD or HP or anything, it does scale pretty hard with CDR. This skill is amazing for last hitting, so don't hesitate to use this skill on minions, especially if the enemy top lane is MIA. Max first [title][img=skills/olaf/r.png] R: Ragnarok[/title] [number]Active: Breaks any crowd control effects. For 6 seconds, Olaf is immune to disables and gains 30/45/60 armor and magic resist. Passive: Olaf has 10/20/30 increased armor penetration. Cooldown 100 seconds Cost 100/75/50 mana Range 400[/number] [highlight]Explanation:[/highlight] A very strong ultimate for a bruiser. Pop this and [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png] and/or [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] to chase anyone or escape anything. Train this whenever available

I put a point into [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] to level 1 harass. When a melee comes in to last hit, you can hit them with it and walk off, and most top laners won't be able to trade back before you run out of range You may instead want to put your first point into [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] to use it to last hit, or harass a ranged with I max [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] first because it is crazy strong in lane. If you are having a lot of trouble in lane, you can max [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] first, for the minion clearing potential I put a point into [imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png] at level 4 to get some sustain. This is especially strong sustain if your health is low(more swings = more life steal)

Item slots are extremely precious on Olaf. Especially with a slot used for [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png]. You must pick your other 4 items wisely [title][highlight]Starting[/highlight][/title] [center][img=items/cloth-armor.png][img=items/health-potion5.png]OR[img=items/boots-of-speed.png][img=items/health-potion3.png]MAYBE[img=items/regrowth-pendant.png][img=items/health-potion.png][/center] [imgsmall=items/cloth-armor.png][imgsmall=items/health-potion5.png] A must against AD bruisers in top lane. This gives you huge sustain to spam [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] as well [imgsmall=items/boots-of-speed.png][imgsmall=items/health-potion3.png] Good when you don't need the armor in top lane. Get this against APs top [imgsmall=items/regrowth-pendant.png][imgsmall=items/health-potion.png] You could possibly start this in a turtle or low burst lane([imgsmall=champ/nasus.png], [imgsmall=champ/chogath.png], [imgsmall=champ/warwick.png], etc.), and rush a [imgsmall=items/philosophers-stone.png] to hoard some early gold [title][highlight]Early[/highlight][/title] [center][item=ionian-boots-of-lucidity]/[img=items/ninja-tabi.png]/[img=items/mercurys-treads.png][img=items/wriggles-lantern.png][img=items/kindlegem.png][/center] [imgsmall=items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] Awesome(and underrated) boots on Olaf. CDR is highly underrated on him. I find these to be better than [imgsmall=items/berserkers-greaves.png] for early DPS, and they also give a bit of survivability/sustain by reducing the cooldown of [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png](for the slow to be up again), [imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png](more healing), [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png](more running). Give these a shot [imgsmall=items/ninja-tabi.png] Get these if you are having trouble in top lane against an auto attacking bruiser. They are pretty strong against caster-type bruisers, but won't be as necessary. You can get an early [imgsmall=items/chain-vest.png] and pick up different boots instead, in some cases. You can also sell it later and switch boots [imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png] Get these if the enemy team has heavy CC, or if you're going against a rough AP top lane. Not as necessary as on other champs because of [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png], but still very worthwhile [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] Lifesteal is core for Olaf, and this item is the best early choice. Gives huge sustain in top. Especially useful against ADs top. I sometimes finish this item before boots. If you're going against a rough AP top lane, you might want to pick up [imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png] or a [imgsmall=items/negatron-cloak.png] before finishing this. You could also get [imgsmall=items/zekes-herald.png] instead for more CDR(with no CDR boots of course) and more HP, but you won't get the AD or armor from Wriggle's that is very necessary [imgsmall=items/kindlegem.png] You need some HP early on in this game. Kindlegem is my answer to this. It also gives CDR which is very strong on Olaf [title][highlight]Mid[/highlight][/title] [center][item=ionian-boots-of-lucidity][img=items/wriggles-lantern.png][img=items/shurelyas-reverie.png][img=items/warmogs-armor.png][/center] [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] I personally think this item is god mode for Olaf. CDR on Olaf is extremely strong(instant [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png]'s, more OP [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png]'s), HP is extremely strong with his [imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png], and this will be your early game HP item. It will also provide some nice HP regen, stacking well with the other HP regen items in your build. The use is the best part though. Olaf gets kited hard, and that's where Shurelya's really shines. Pop this and you can chase anyone or escape anything. Did I mention it helps your team? [imgsmall=items/warmogs-armor.png] HP is awesome on Olaf([imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png]). This item gives lots of it. Also synergizes very well with [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png], while the HP regen synergizes well with Shurelya's and Force of Nature. I take this over [imgsmall=items/frozen-mallet.png] because you already have a strong slow with [imgsmall=skills/olaf/p.png], though it will take some time to practice hitting it [title][highlight]Late[/highlight][/title] [center][item=ionian-boots-of-lucidity][img=items/wriggles-lantern.png][img=items/shurelyas-reverie.png][img=items/warmogs-armor.png][img=items/atmas-impaler.png][img=items/force-of-nature.png][/center] [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] Scales awesomely with [imgsmall=items/warmogs-armor.png] + [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png]. Provides all the AD you'll need for killing their squishies [imgsmall=items/force-of-nature.png] Gives all the MR you desperately need. It should be enough, unless they have a super AP heavy comp. Also gives movespeed which is an awesome stat for Olaf, and some HP regen to stack with your Warmog's and Shurelya's, bringing you to a whopping ~120+ HP regen per second! [highlight]Other strong options[/highlight] [imgsmall=items/zekes-herald.png][imgsmall=items/frozen-mallet.png][imgsmall=items/the-bloodthirster.png][imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png][imgsmall=items/last-whisper.png][imgsmall=items/quicksilver-sash.png][imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png][imgsmall=items/guardian-angel.png][imgsmall=items/spirit-visage.png] [imgsmall=items/zekes-herald.png] Gives a ton of things you want. You can get this instead of [imgsmall=items/warmogs-armor.png] if you don't have [imgsmall=items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] [imgsmall=items/frozen-mallet.png] You can get this in place of [imgsmall=items/warmogs-armor.png] or even [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] if you desperately need the slow. I dont like getting this because [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] is enough slow for me. It just takes some practice throwing axes [imgsmall=items/the-bloodthirster.png] A good item instead of [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] if you feel you don't need the lane sustain or armor. You can just pick up a [imgsmall=items/vampiric-scepter.png] and work on other items, finishing this later. Also good to replace [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] with once you have a full build [imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png] A good item in place of [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] if you don't need the utility and want more DPS. Extremely expensive though [imgsmall=items/last-whisper.png] A decent choice for a for a final item if you don't need any MR. You could also get this in place of Shurelya's late game [imgsmall=items/quicksilver-sash.png] A good item in place of [imgsmall=items/force-of-nature.png] when they enemy has a lot of hard CC that they are getting off on you after your [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png] runs out. Also a good choice against[imgsmall=summoners/exhaust.png]/[imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png] [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] A decent MR choice, especially if there is some annoying targeted CC you want to get rid of. The HP will also help scale your [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png], and the mana isn't half bad either [imgsmall=items/guardian-angel.png] A decent choice instead of [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] if you are being focused or just want survivability over damage [imgsmall=items/spirit-visage.png] A good choice instead of [imgsmall=items/warmogs-armor.png] if you don't have CDR cap, and you feel the game will end before you can complete 6 items [highlight]Worth mentioning[/highlight] [imgsmall=items/heart-of-gold.png][imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png][imgsmall=items/the-brutalizer.png][imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png][imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png][imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png][imgsmall=items/zekes-herald.png][imgsmall=items/berserkers-greaves.png][imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png][imgsmall=items/phantom-dancer.png] [imgsmall=items/heart-of-gold.png] Good if you plan on getting [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] and taking a support-tank sort of role [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] Awesome item for a tank role. You can get this instead of [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] if they have lots of AD and your team really needs a tank [imgsmall=items/the-brutalizer.png] Very strong early game item. CDR + AD + armor pen is exactly what you want. The problem is that I don't find the [imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png] upgrade very worthwhile. This item delays your build, and you'll just have to sell it later. Still worth trying though [imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png] A decent item. You could get this instead of [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] for a movement boost, but you'd be squishier. It's also half the speed and doesn't give the speed to your whole team [imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png] Pretty decent mid game item if you're taking a full tank role. You may have to sell it later on though [imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png] Pretty awesome in concept. This + [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] and you have max CDR. Wouldn't be necessary with CDR boots though. You could get this instead of [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] if they have heavy AD and no one else on your team is getting it [imgsmall=items/berserkers-greaves.png] Pretty strong item for Olaf if they have very low CC and you don't need [imgsmall=items/ninja-tabi.png]. I prefer [imgsmall=items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] though [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png] Huge trololol DPS. If your team is already uber tanky and you want to do some huge damage, this may be worth getting [imgsmall=items/phantom-dancer.png] Another decent trololol DPS item. May be worth while if you don't get [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] and are going full DPS

If you and an enemy are standing still(or even moving slowly), and you have a bit of CDR(~25%), you will be able to pick up and throw your your [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] over and over, INSTANTLY. This will let you to do extreme DPS. You can even get some auto attacks off in throws. You can bait people into fighting you when you're low extremely hard with this + [imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png], because they won't expect the huge amount of damage and sustain. If you're low and being chased, just enter a bush and wait for them to follow you in. This is when you blow them up, even if you have a lot less health than them. Keep an eye on your mana though!

[highlight]Early[/highlight] Farm, farm, farm! At level 1, if your enemy is melee, use your [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] on them whenever they go in for a last hit and back up so they can't trade. Once you hit 2, you can [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] and [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] before backing up. Abuse your skill damage to trade; there's usually no point in auto attacking! Once you have harassed them down enough, you can attempt a kill with [imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png], [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png], and [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] for slowing Don't hesitate to use your [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] and [imgsmall=skills/olaf/e.png] for farming Use your [imgsmall=skills/olaf/w.png] early on for some sustain, even more-so when your health is low(more attacks = more life steal). The spell vamp mechanic also works with your [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png]! The first time you go back and every time after that, you should have a [imgsmall=items/sight-ward.png](this won't be as necessary once you have [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png]). Keep vision in river for ganks, and watch your minimap. When they enemy top lane is MIA, feel free to push the minions into the tower with [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] to deny him some creeps. Once you hit 6, don't hesitate to pop [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png] and [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png] to escape ganks. If you are comfortable in overextending, don't hesitate to take the tower decently early in the game [highlight]Mid[/highlight] Take the tower top lane if you haven't already, while also keeping your tower alive. This means having to head back towards top when you know the enemy top lane is trying to push, or try to have your mid or jungle head up there if you can't. When the lane is pushed, feel free to roam and gank. With some CDR, ganks with [imgsmall=skills/olaf/q.png] are extremely strong. Once you have [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] you will really start to shine at ganking and team because you can chase extremely well, while also helping your allies chase. (Don't hesitate to use [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png] and [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] to gank!) Focus on securing objectives. If your lane is in good condition and you have a good idea of where the enemy mid and jungle are, go ahead and counter jungle a bit However, if you lose your tower, I'd recommend keeping the river heavily warded and pushing back to attempt to take their tower. A common misconception is that freezing the lane is a good idea. 75% of the time this will just cause your enemy top to roam and snowball his team to victory. If you push the lane he will be forced to come back and defend the tower [highlight]Late[/highlight] You won't have to worry so much about your tower in top lane anymore. Just focus on sticking with the team and taking objectives In team fights, make sure your team is together and not outnumbered. Run through the front line to squishy targets(APs with low HP and ranged AD carries) with [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png] and/or [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png], popping [imgsmall=skills/olaf/r.png] when necessary

I find Olaf to be extremely fun in top lane, and I hope you will too. I plan to keep this guide updated, and also will add a lot of match up details as I figure more out. Thanks for reading!
