04/20/2012 - Updated runes, masteries and included another commentary 01/16/2012 - Updated runes, masteries and other sections 11/08/2011 - Released guide

This is the second guide in my support champion guides series. Alistar has seen wide usage before and after the remake many months ago. He is definitely one of the more difficult support champions to perfect and one of my favorite supports to play. Any general support information is covered in my other guide of which this guide is an extension of.

Alistar is a widely seen champion in the competitive scene due to his multiple CCs, heals and tankiness. He continues to see usage despite multiple nerfs, the biggest of which affected his tankiness as a support. Regardless, Alistar is an amazing champion with an extremely high skill cap. [highlight] Strengths:[/highlight] +AoE CC +High base stats +Very tanky with just his ultimate +Decent heal in lane [highlight]Weaknesses:[/highlight] -Vulnerable to true damage -Difficult to play consistently -Difficulty engaging on targets with numerous CCs -No steroid for allies -Melee -Can't milk those

Marks: Armor is the best option for bottom lane for marks. Magic resistance is another possible option, while Armor Penetration synergies well with the bonus AD from [imgsmall=skills/alistar/r.png]. Seals: Armor is the best option for seals and allows Alistar to be tankier early game from physical damage. Gold per 10 seals is a viable option, but renders you to be much squishier. Glyphs: A mixture of flat and scaling magic resistance glyphs will be the best, depending on how much magic damage the opposing lane has. Quints: Gold per 10 is the best option for quints on support Alistar. [imgext=]

[title][img=skills/alistar/p.png] Passive: Trample[/title] [number]Whenever Alistar casts a spell, he gains Trample for 3 seconds ignoring unit collision and dealing 10-23 (+10% ability power) area damage per second (double damage to minions and monsters) [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Trample is a fairly weak passive that gives a slight boost of damage, but on a support Alistar with no AP items, it really isn't much damage. However, it provides a tool for Alistar to clear creeps. It also grants unit collision which allows Alistar to walk through minions and champions. [highlight]Note:[/highlight] Careful when using [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png] under the enemy tower, as you can take aggro due to [imgsmall=skills/alistar/p.png] if you are near an enemy champion. [title][img=skills/alistar/q.png] Q: Pulverize[/title] [number]Alistar smashes the ground, dealing 60/105/150/195/240 (+50% of ability power) magic damage and tossing all nearby enemy units into the air and stunning them for 0.5 seconds. Cooldown 17/16/15/14/13 seconds Cost 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 mana Range 365 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Alistar's Signature skill. When combined with Flash, or even a simple Headbutt it can make for some devastating AoE CC. [title][img=skills/alistar/w.png] W: Headbutt[/title] [number]Alistar charges at an enemy and rams them dealing 85/130/175/220/265 (+70% of ability power) magic damage and knocking them back (does not stun). Cooldown 14/13/12/11/10 seconds Cost 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110mana Range 650 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] A simple headbutt that pushes the target back and propels Alistar towards the target. [highlight]Note:[/highlight] It can be used on minions. [title][img=skills/alistar/e.png] E: Triumphant Roar[/title] [number]Instantly restore 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+20% of ability power) health to himself and half of that value to surrounding allied units. Cooldown ticks down by 2 seconds each time a nearby enemy unit dies. Cooldown 12 seconds Cost 28 / 41 / 54 / 67 / 80 mana Range 200[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] An extremely underrated heal that gives a decent heal to Alistar and a halved heal to all nearby friendly units (including minions). When pushing, the heal is constantly up due to the cooldown of the spell going down after each enemy death, including minions. Unfortunately, in the recent patches, the mana cost was increased by a lot, making it much more difficult to spam. [highlight]Note:[/highlight] This spell, if used near minions, will push your wave. Avoid using it near your own minions if you do not wish to push your wave. [title][img=skills/alistar/r.png] R: Unbreakable Will[/title] [number]Alistar gains 60 / 75 / 90 physical damage, and takes 50/60/70% reduced physical and magic damage for 7 seconds. Cooldown 120 / 100 / 80seconds Cost 150 mana[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is the absolute reason as to why Alistar is extremely tanky. On top of normal Armor/MR mitigation, there is an extra 50/60/70% damage mitigation. Upon usage of the ultimate, any slows, stuns or suppressions will be cleansed. [highlight]Note: [/highlight]True damage is unmitigated and will go through your ultimate.

One of the biggest reasons why Alistar is strong is because of his ability to initiate an engagement with a Headbutt + Pulverize. 1) Use [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] 2) Use [imgsmall=skills/alistar/q.png] after the animation of Headbutt starts Simple. Typically, mashing [imgsmall=skills/alistar/q.png] immediately after [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] starts the animation will result in a successful Headbutt + Pulverize combo.

[highlight]Start with [imgsmall=skills/alistar/q.png] (Pulverize), always.[/highlight] Whether or not you plan to teamfight level 1 or play passive, the AoE CC from Pulverize is simply too good for any alternative. [highlight]Level 2:[/highlight] Depending on how the lane is going, I may start with [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png] (Triumphant Roar) or [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] (Headbutt). If my lane partner and I plan to go aggressive, then I will pick up Headbutt and aim for a kill. If my lane partner is getting harassed a lot, I will pick up Triumphant Roar and heal him and instead pick up Headbutt at level 3. I always max [imgsmall=skills/alistar/q.png] first, as the extra lower cooldown on an AoE stun plus damage beats out the other two spells, but I might not necessarily max it immediately. Depending on the match-up and whether or not I need the sustain, that will decide if I will max [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] or [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png] second. I actually tend to put one or two points into [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] so that I will be able to have the cooldown of it to be lower than Pulverize, the damage is only secondary in this case. The rest of the points will go into [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png] as it heals a fairly decent amount due to its AoE potential.

Like on Alistar, I have a core build that is persistent across all supports. [img=items/philosophers-stone.png][img=items/heart-of-gold.png][img=items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] with some [img=items/sight-ward.png]. [img=items/ninja-tabi.png] is also a good alternative to Lucidity boots, if there is a lot of physical and autoattack damage. After the gold per 10s, I tend to build into aura items. [img=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png] Aegis gives an incredibly powerful team wide aura that includes resistances and a slight bit of AD. The aura is much stronger early game when your team has less resistances and the other team has less damage, making a late Aegis much less effective. Even so, Aegis is still an excellent choice. [img=items/zekes-herald.png] Zeke's is another powerful aura item that I will build if my team has several autoattackers/AD champions. Do try to not buy too much CDR items so you aren't wasting too much on the CDR stat. [img=items/locket-of-the-iron-solari.png] I typically don't build Locket until really late. However, the stats Locket provide and the shield is not to be overlooked. [img=items/will-of-the-ancients.png] If your team is more inched towards the magic side, then a Will of the Ancients could be a decent choice. This is mainly if you have a duo AP comp and neither wishes to pick one up. [highlight]If you feel that you need more damage:[/highlight] [img=items/sheen.png] -> [img=items/trinity-force.png] Sheen provides some extra mana and AP and gives a sizable damage boost with the proc due to Alistar high base damage. The extra proc combined with an increase damage from his [imgsmall=skills/alistar/r.png] results in a pretty decent amount of damage against squishy targets that don't build much resistances (enemy AD carries). [highlight]If you feel that you need more resistances:[/highlight] [img=items/wardens-mail.png] -> [img=items/randuins-omen.png] Warden's Mail is an amazing item due to the proc being extremely effective against autoattackers. As a squishy AD carry, it is difficult to ignore an Alistar attacking you and likely being able to CC you once he comes into range. AD carries are required to attack the closest target, even if it's an Alistar under his ultimate and the [imgsmall=items/wardens-mail.png] or [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] will punish him for this. [img=items/glacial-shroud.png] -> [img=items/frozen-heart.png] The extra resistance stats from these two items are amazing, plus extra mana and cooldown reduction. The only problem with this is that the cooldown reduction tends to be wasted as [imgsmall=items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] and [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] combined with masteries will give very close to 40% CDR (the cap). [img=items/sunfire-cape.png] HP is the best stat on Alistar to increase his tankiness due to his ultimate being giving Alistar amazing tanking stats. Sunfire cape's passive gives Alistar some extra damage just for being inside the crowd and gives a combination of tanky stats and extra damage.

There are two ways to run Alistar as a support role. [highlight]Aggressive:[/highlight] In an aggressive lane, you will want to pair Alistar with a strong AD carry with reliable cc and/or high damage, namely - [imgsmall=champ/graves.png][imgsmall=champ/missfortune.png][imgsmall=champ/tristana.png][imgsmall=champ/vayne.png][imgsmall=champ/ezreal.png]. In such a lane, you will need to capitalize on enemy mistakes, but most importantly to make sure that the AD carry is able to follow up on anything you do. Level 2 Alistar has the most potential for a kill, whether it be a Flash Pulverize Headbutt or a Headbutt into a wall then Pulverize. Always be careful of minions, as a large amount of minions WILL do substantial amount of damage. Note: Against a non-sustain lane, engaging to do damage will allow you to zone and can be just as devastating as a kill. [highlight]Passive:[/highlight] In a passive lane, your goal is to simply babysit and prioritize farming. Such a lane relies on a stronger late game ([imgsmall=champ/kogmaw.png][imgsmall=champ/ashe.png]) or the ability to push ([imgsmall=champ/caitlyn.png]). In this lane, you still have kill potential, but mainly after a few levels or with a jungle gank.

Alistar has two possible roles in a teamfight - tank or support. [highlight] Tank:[/highlight] A tank works as a sponge for damage and crowd control spells and in Alistar's case, has the ability to initiate engagements. You will likely be using both Headbutt and Pulverize on the enemy back lines, allowing for your team to follow up. However, as a reminder Alistar will not be able to effectively tank damage in a lengthened fight due to his ultimate providing most of his tankiness. [highlight]Support:[/highlight] A support's goal is to assist the carries and protect them. You will likely be using Headbutt to push enemies away and Pulverize to stun targets that are aiming for your carry. Most often, I find myself in the front lines as a tank for the duration of my ultimate, but I will back out to assist my carries once I start to get low on health.

Alistar is a very difficult champion as supports go. His high skill cap and room for errors has caused him to not be as popular in solo queue and competitive play. Nevertheless, Alistar contains amazing potential and is a very rewarding champion to play.
