03/08/2013 - Released guide

Alistar is one of the most versatile supports, being that he has AoE CC, sustain and is extremely tanky. He has been nerfed countless times and is one of the oldest supports in League of Legends.

[title]Strengths:[/title] +AoE CC +Sustain +Knockback +Very tanky +High base defense stats +Very easy to gank for +Can't milk those [title]Weaknesses:[/title] -Fairly dependent on Flash for ganks -Very high mana costs -Not very tanky late game without ultimate -Fairly long cooldowns

[title]Marks:[/title] Armor Armor is the best for a tanky support, it allows Alistar to take extra hits. Attack Damage AD is an option for going aggressive as the bonus damage can help you finish off targets. [title]Seals:[/title] Armor Armor is the best defensive option for seals. Mana Regeneration Mana regen is an option since Alistar has huge mana problems. [title]Glyphs:[/title] Magic Resistance (Flat/Scaling) MR helps greatly against most lanes as champions do a decent amount of magical damage. Scaling MR is an option as you'll eventually start to take magic damage in teamfights. [title]Quintessences:[/title] Gold per 10 GP10 is the ideal rune choice for Alistar as it allows him to scale into late game and buy more items. Health HP is an option if the lane is a huge kill lane and you wish to survive. [imgext=] [imgext=]

[title] Passive: Trample[/title] [title]Explanation:[/title] Does a bit of damage in an AoE around Alistar each time you use a skill. Note: Careful as using [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png] while under enemy tower can trigger aggro if Trample hits an enemy. [title] Q: Pulverize[/title] [title]Explanation:[/title] AoE CC with a fairly low cooldown. Note: It can be difficult to land Pulverize without the Headbutt+Pulverize combo or Flash, as people generally don't let Alistar walk up to them. [title] W: Headbutt[/title] [title]Explanation:[/title] Knocks the enemy back. Note: When you Headbutt an enemy into a wall, they get stunned the duration where they would normally be flying backwards and can be used as a secondary stun in this case. [title] E: Triumphant Roar[/title] [title]Explanation:[/title] Heals in an AoE around Alistar. Note: The mana cost on this skill is incredibly high, making it not ideal to be spammed. [title] R: Unbreakable Will[/title] [title]Explanation:[/title] Unbreakable Will makes Alistar extremely tanking and gives him a bit of bonus AD. Activating Unbreakable Will also cleanses any stuns, including suppressions. Note: True damage still hurts a ton.

[title] > > /[/title] Maxing [imgsmall=skills/alistar/q.png] first: Lower cooldown and higher damage on Alistar's AoE CC is pretty much ideal to max first. Maxing [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] or [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png] second: If the lane is being pressured and I need the extra sustain, I put a few levels into [imgsmall=skills/alistar/e.png], otherwise I take more levels into [imgsmall=skills/alistar/w.png] for more damage.

[title]Start: [/title]( + ) + + Start Faerie Charm for an early Philo Stone or save for a later Chalice of Harmony. + + Starting with both Faerie Charm and Rejuvenation Bead leaves you with no potions and only two wards. Only use this if you are sure that you will be returning back to base early for the early Philo Stone. [title]Rush:[/title] / + Grab any of these items early. Sightstone is a must, while Philo Stone is option. A Doran's Shield is also a great option if bot lane is constantly trading as the passive and additional tankiness is extremely strong. [title]Boots:[/title] / + CDR boots are the best for most situations, but Ninja Tabi is excellent for early tankiness or just to be tanky. For enchantments, you'll most likely go with Captain or Distortion. Distortion is excellent if you want to be the one initiating, as you need to lower cooldown on Flash, and Captain is nice for additional maneuverability. [title]Important:[/title] + / Sightstone and Ruby Sightstone are extremely valuable items. Both these items allows you to forget about buying wards, saving a ton of gold. Getting these items as early as possible will give you the greatest return on the investment, plus the HP is awesome. Aegis of the Legion is needed on every team. The defensive stats granted are extremely gold efficient, but if someone else on the team has it, then just get a Locket of the Iron Solari. Locket of the Iron Solari has everything you need as a support. HP, CDR, Armor AND an active shield, Locket is a solid item for any match-up. [title]Utility:[/title] ///// Warden's Mail's passive allows Alistar to lower the attack speed of AD carries that choose to attack him. The upgrade into Frozen Heart or Randuin's Omen are great options too. Frozen Heart gives Alistar tankiness, CDR and additional mana. All of these stats help Alistar stay in the fight for longer periods of time to allow for multiple usages of his spells. Shurelya's Reverie gives Alistar a strong initiation tool that is upgraded from a Philo Stone. Zeke's Herald is a strong aura item, but is rather expensive. Zeke's is still awesome when the team consists of multiple AD champions, but it is definitely difficult to rush. I would aim for this item third or fourth after some of the other items. Runic Bulwark is the upgrade for [imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png], but is really only useful when going against a lot of magic damage. The upgrade is extremely costly, so make sure that the extra MR will be useful before purchasing it, simply having an Aegis is sufficient in many cases. Mikael's Crucible gives Alistar a ton of extra mana regen, but this is an expensive item and doesn't provide much tankiness for Alistar.

One [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] = Easy Three [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] = Mediocre/skill match-up Five [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] = Hard [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Blitzcrank lacks the sustain that Alistar provides and has difficulty killing Alistar. Be very careful of times when Blitzcrank has the level advantage, as Alistar can be bursted down with Ignite prior to Alistar's level 6. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Alistar has enough CC to prevent Fiddlesticks from ulting and is tanky enough to survive Fiddlestick's CC. Only the AD carry is really vulnerable to Fiddlesticks. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Janna can't play aggressively in this lane, but neither can Alistar. Both sides will just farm, but be careful of harass from the AD buffed from Janna's shield. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Leona has a difficult time engaging and lacks the sustain that Alistar provides. Both sides will likely just farm, but be careful of Leona hitting level 6, as there is a lot of burst damage at that moment. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Lulu has incredible poking damage and the range to abuse Alistar. Alistar needs to play safe and punish Lulu if she decides to go too aggressive. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Morgana is a bit difficult for Alistar, as her Black Shield can negate Alistar's CCs. Alistar significantly outscales Morgana, so simply aim to farm. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Nami can trade very well against Alistar, but her mana costs are incredibly high, which will likely end up with Nami simply running out of mana for any more trades. The Alistar lane will be able to farm fairly easily once Nami is out of mana. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Nunu does outscale Alistar in terms of raw DPS from the AD carry. However, both sides will just farm in lane without much aggression. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Sona has the superior harass and sustain, but is very vulnerable to ganks if she is playing aggressive. Don't take free damage, but do try to engage when she overextends. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Soraka can be harassed and killed early on. Be careful of tanking too much minion damage and running out of mana on Alistar. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Taric has very little pressure on Alistar and both sides can easily farm. Remember to Headbutt the enemy AD carry away whenever Taric stuns. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Thresh has the lane advantage. Thresh can harass Alistar starting from level 1 and has the ability to engage onto Alistar. Try to gank the Thresh when he overextends, otherwise you'll have a tough time in lane. [title]Difficulty:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png][imgsmall=champ/alistar.png] Explanation: Zyra is another tough lane, as her harass will force Alistar into a bad position. Try to farm as best as possible, as it is almost impossible to out trade Zyra, unless you manage to burst her down quickly.

[title]Alistar has two possible roles in a teamfight - tank or support.[/title] Tank: A tank works as a sponge for damage and crowd control spells and in Alistar's case, has the ability to initiate engagements. You will likely be using both Headbutt and Pulverize on the enemy back lines, allowing for your team to follow up. However, as a reminder Alistar will not be able to effectively tank damage in a lengthened fight due to his ultimate providing most of his tankiness. Support: A support's goal is to assist the carries and protect them. You will likely be using Headbutt to push enemies away and Pulverize to stun targets that are aiming for your carry. Most often, I find myself in the front lines as a tank for the duration of my ultimate, but I will back out to assist my carries once I start to get low on health.

Alistar is a very difficult champion as supports go. His high skill cap and room for errors has caused him to not be as popular in solo queue and competitive play. Nevertheless, Alistar contains amazing potential and is a very rewarding champion to play.
