Hi, I'm top 100 arranged player Sup3rNova, and Master Yi is one of my favorite champions, and i rarely see him played right, so here's my guide: Master Yi might not be the best champion around, but he is underrated, he CAN bring a lot to a game, you are not going to get to 2300 playing him, but if you do it right you can get to 1800+ easily. I'm going to cover here the right way to play him, I'm going to talk about teamfights and explain how to gank, and I'm going to talk what to and what not to do as Master Yi. And I'm going to try to explain why Master Yi is not a right click champion. People say he is easy to play, and they are right, but he's very hard to Master.

Pretty standard Master Yi Rune book, you need that armor pen the whole game, it's wonderful on him, and every jungler that uses auto attack for jungling. You are going to need those dodge yellows if you want to be 100% effective in the jungle, when you get a dodge from a big creep it counts a lot, much more than the reduced damage from the armor yellows. I get cooldown reduction blues since his entire early game is cooldown based, but you can still go for good options like magic resist, depending on the enemy team. Lastly you have 2 big choices on quintessences, Health again a good counter jungler, or EXP if you are going against a slow jungler. I would recommend HP for everyone that's new to Master Yi, it's safer and easier, but I play with EXP ones often.

[title][img=skills/masteryi/p.png] Passive: Double Strike[/title] [number]Master Yi strikes twice every 7th attack.[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Great Passive helps a lot with ganking, and can make you Burst any enemy in ganks. [title][img=skills/masteryi/q.png] Q: Alpha Strike[/title] [number]Master Yi leaps across the battlefield striking up to 4 enemies, dealing 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 (+100% of ability power) magic damage to each enemy with a 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60% chance to deal 400 bonus magic damage to minions. Cooldown 18seconds Cost 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 / 120mana Range 600[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] His way of farming/jungling, his way of closing gaps, his way of escaping. [title][img=skills/masteryi/w.png] W: Meditate[/title] [number]Master Yi channels, restoring 140 / 280 / 420 / 560 / 700 (+165% of ability power) health over 5 seconds. While channeling, Master Yi gains 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 armor and magic resistance. Cooldown 45seconds Cost 70 / 85 / 100 / 115 / 130mana Range 20[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Good spell to get at level 4 to help your jungling, but that's it. It can help in 1v1s. [title][img=skills/masteryi/e.png] E: Wuju Style[/title] [number]Passive: Increases physical damage by 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35. Active: Master Yi can activate this ability to double its effectiveness for 10 seconds, but this removes the passive bonus until Wuju Style becomes available again. Cooldown 30seconds Cost 40mana Range 20[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Great passive skill, gives you a BF sword when active at level 3. This spell is mostly why it makes Master YI so strong at mid game, you add this with Yommu's GhostBlade and you are the higher DPS in the game. [title][img=skills/masteryi/r.png] R: Highlander[/title] [number]Increases Master Yi's movement speed by 40% and Attack Speed by 40 / 60 / 80%, and he becomes immune to all slowing effects for 6 / 9 / 12 seconds. Additionally, killing a champion refreshes all of Master Yi's cooldowns. (Assists reduce half of the base cooldown amount.) Cooldown 75seconds Cost 120mana Range 1[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Great for chasing, escaping, and great for teamfights. Learning when to use this spell is going to differentiate you from bad players.

You can alternate from Alpha Strike and Wuju Style, but I suggest that you maximize Alpha Strike first, it makes him less reliable on auto attacking. Meditate may seem like a good spell, but it's not, it's extremely situational. The heal is not good enough, and if you are playing him right you shouldn't need the extra armor/MR. Most of the times if you are in a bad situation running is better than trying to meditate.

Start with [imgsmall=items/cloth-armor.png] and [imgsmall=items/health-potion5.png] And do this Route: [imgext=] Yellow Spot, is where you should come from when ganking. Green Spot is a great place to ward for counter jungling. [highlight]6 (dragon) Should only be done after Wriggle's Lantern and if it's a good situation[/highlight] This is the best route for leveling, it's a hard one, but you can do it without any Alpha Strike's procs. But if you are having troubles you can start on the wraiths. Alpha strike the Golems and wait to see if you got any procs, than smite one of them. After this first Smite you should save your Smites for buffs and dragon, don't misuse them. You should always use Wuju Style when attacking the big creeps for the double damage. And if you don't get any dodges/alpha strike procs you may not have enough health to kill the lizard, be advised. After Lizard you should Meditate and look for a gank, but if you can't go back and buy [imgsmall=items/madreds-razors.png] and some [imgsmall=items/health-potion.png] Double Golem should be up, so go jungle some more, but always looking for ganks. Again DON'T MISUSE YOU SMITES!! Always last hit buffs and dragon with it, that's a must for every jungler. [title]When to Dragon?[/title] You should only try to kill Dragon if you have a advantage on the enemy team, this advantage can be a kill on bot lane, or a better comp. Because most of the times it will be warded and they will try to stop you. You can solo dragon after [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] but always have your team with you to help you. [title]Be the King Of The Jungle[/title] Know when buffs/dragon/baron are going to respawn. If you know when dragon or a buff is going to come up, you can do it before the other team even knows about it. [imgext=] Credit to Ltdash for the image.

This is where Master Yi shines, he's one of the best early/mid game gankers, after Shaco, Udyr and Rammus, he can close the gap doing some good damage with Alpha Strike, and with Red Buff and Ghost they shouldn't get away. After lizard you should always be looking for easy ganks, but don't try hard ganks when you could be farming, farm is very important for Yi, since he's one of the best scaling champions on the game. If you find one, let your teammate know what you are going to do, then Alpha Strike him, and ghost if necessary, that simple. If you get the kill, push the tower with your teammates, he's a very good pusher. When you get level 6 things should be even easier, but NEVER use your ult before Alpha Strike (unless you are chasing someone) you are wasting Highlander if you do that, and i see people doing it all the time for no reason.

Core Items: [imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png] [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png] [highlight]Reasoning:[/highlight] Yommu's GhostBlade has everything Master Yi needs, damage, attack speed, armor penetration, critical chance, movement speed and cooldown reduction. It's in my opinion the best item for most melee AD champions. Works very well with Highlander, Double Strike and Infinity Edge. Wriggle's Lantern gives him all life steal he needs early-mid game, makes farming even faster, and give him wards. Infinity Edge works great with Yommu's. Final Build for most of my games: [imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png] [imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png] [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png] [imgsmall=items/the-bloodthirster.png] [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] [highlight]Reasoning:[/highlight] Mercury Treads is a must for all melee AD champions, makes easy to go in and out of a team fight, and combining with his ult makes him one of the most difficult champions to catch. Bloodthirster adds more to your DPS than any other item, he can quickly farm the stacks for it and gives him absurd life steal combined with Wriggle's. Banshee's gives him the survivability he needs to carry any late game. [title]I DO NOT RECOMMEND:[/title] [imgsmall=items/berserkers-greaves.png] The attack speed is good, but you won't do any damage while stunned, so Mercury is better. [imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png] Adds little to his damage and it's extremely expensive. [imgsmall=items/phantom-dancer.png] Adds little to his damage, he doesn't need the extra attack speed, nor the movement speed, and it's expensive.

You should be strong enough now to clear the jungle in about a minute now, so you have 2 options: [.]Counter jungle Master Yi excels in 1v1 situation, and he's very good on escaping, so counter jungling mid game is very easy, just don't kill yourself. If you know where their jungle is, ping first for your teammate before you engage, so your teammates know what's happening before theirs do. [.] Look for a empty lane Master Yi is very dependent on items, so if a lane is empty go for it, he pushes very fast as well, so try to get a tower.

People say that Master Yi is bad at team fights, I think bad players that play Master Yi are bad at team fights. You need to know when to come in and when to come out, you can't just go in out of nowhere. If a team fight breaks out you should wait and get in a good position, let some CC's be thrown away, this is extremely important. When the time is right, Use Highlander and yommu's,[highlight] don't use Alpha Strike first, because they will probably have flash, save the Alpha Strike to when they use it.[/highlight] The other team will obviously note you, so you should be quick, focus the target until he can't be reached or he's dead, after that fall back. Go back to the fight if necessary or if possible. Never Ever Meditate in the middle of a team fight, that's dumb and never works, you should try to run, you have a better chance.

That's it, simple but difficult to execute. You are not going to be top ELO playing him, but he's fun, and viable to high ELO. Let me know what do you think, let me know if you think something is wrong or should me added or removed. And remember that everyone is inferior to Master Yi skill's!
