!!! Hi everyone, this is Everlasting from the NA servers and I am here to write my second guide. [imgext=http://timpaphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/paul_timpa_submit_large.jpg] When I first saw Malphite, I thought of Atlas holding up the heavens... a muscular and toned figured weighed with the heavy burdens of the world. The more fervent our endeavors, the greater his affliction. I play Malphite mostly as a top lane, and this guide will be strictly focused on top lane. However, it is important for me to stress that Malphite works just as good as Jungler, Mid, or Support. Malphite should be primarily be used as a counter pick. He is extremely effective vs heavy AD/auto attack teams due to his [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png],[imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png], and [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] Anyways, forward!

06/21/12 - Uploaded a New HD Good Video - Added a Champion Match up chapter with how to build against your lane - Changed Builds and added more comments and variations

[highlight]Marks [/highlight]- Magic Pen always [highlight] Seals[/highlight] - Armor or flat Mana Regen. Use Armor if vs AD. Optional: Use Mana regen if vs AP [highlight]Glyphs[/highlight] - Flat Mr, Mr per level, or Ap per level. Use Flat MR if vs AP. Use MR per level if vs team with decent amount of ap damage( 2 ap damagers or 1 ap damager + a hybrid( Jax). Use AP per level vs teams with no or 1 ap damager. [highlight] Quints[/highlight] - Magic Pen, Flat Armor, Flat AP Magic Pen is good since you do not have the penetration masteries, nor are you going for void staff. Armor dominates your lane and mitigates the enemy's damage. Flat AP is good for early game damage Since I use Malphite as a counter pick vs top lane [imgsmall=champ/tryndamere.png], I mostly use flat armor quints, but my next choice of quints would be Magic Pen. [highlight] Standard Runes[/highlight]= Magic pen Marks, Armor seals, Mr per level glyphs, Armor Quints

[title][img=skills/malphite/p.png] Passive: Granite Shield[/title] [number]Malphite is shielded by a layer of rock which absorbs damage up to 10% of his maximum health. If he has not been hit for 10 seconds, this effect recharges. [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] I believe it got nerfed twice for laning phase, but it is still a very good passive since it allows you to win trades in lane [title][img=skills/malphite/q.png] Q: Seismic Shard[/title] [number]Deals 70 / 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 (+60% of ability power) magic damage and steals 14 / 17 / 20 / 23 / 26% movement speed from the target for 4 seconds. Cooldown 8seconds Cost 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90mana Range 625[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This skill allows you to deal goood damage and stick to your target. The purpose of [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] is stop your enemy from positioning themself correctly. If a [imgsmall=champ/nocturne.png] was trying to kill our AD carry, I will throw a [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] at him so that our AD carry can position himself/kite the enemy while is slowed. Likewise, I use [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] on the enemy AD carry if he is trying to run away from me. I also tend to use this skill on whoever is using a speed booster( ghost/shurelia/etc) to mitigate the effect of their skill and diminish whatever they were trying to accomplish with their speed boost. Generally, use [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] to stick to the enemy if you dove into their backline. Otherwise, use [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] to peel off the enemy trying to kill your backline [title][img=skills/malphite/w.png] W: Brutal Strikes[/title] [number]Passive: Malphite's attacks hit units near his target for 30 / 38 / 46 / 54 / 62% of his attack damage. Active: Increase Malphite's armor and attack damage 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 6 seconds. Cooldown 14 seconds Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] increases your attack damage and armor, so use it before using [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] since [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] increases the damage of [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] [title][img=skills/malphite/e.png] E: Ground Slam[/title] [number]Malphite slams the ground dealing 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+50% of his Armor) magic damage to surrounding enemies, reducing their attack speed by 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% for 4 seconds. Cooldown 7 seconds Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] I love this skill since its what makes Malphite so effective vs Auto attackers. It devastates their damage. Same as [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png], use it primarily for utility rather than for damage. [title][img=skills/malphite/r.png] R: Unstoppable Force[/title] [number]Malphite charges towards the target area, dealing 200 / 300 / 400 (+100% of ability power) magic damage and knocking enemies into the air for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds. Cooldown 130 / 115 / 100 / 110seconds Cost 100mana Range 1000[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] I remember Malphites charging into dead walls while trying to escape with this skill. [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png] stuns the enemy( knock them up) for 1.5 seconds. So do not use [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] immediately after using your ult! That would waste 1 second of [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png]'s effect. However, if the enemy is close to death or if you bursted non-auto attackers, immediately using E is better since it will come off of cooldown sooner. Use [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png], immediately activate [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] for bonus armor and damage, then wait 1 second before using [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png], right before the knock up duration ends. ^- that is the ideal ult, but activating [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] before using [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png] is easier and fine as well. However, remember to try to activate your [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] before using [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png]

The Skill Order is tricky because every skill is so good Max [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] first if you are trying to harass the enemy down gradually or vs AP or if you are winning the lane Max [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] first if you are having trouble vs someone who is auto attacking you often Get a point in [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] at lvl 4 if you are trading auto attacks with someone often. When he starts auto attacking you, activate [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] to trade blows with him. If he starts backing off, use Q to stick onto him and keep on auto attacking him. [highlight] Full Skill Orders[/highlight] Max [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png], then max [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png], with no point in [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] if vs Ranged/Ap/or a lane you are dominating Max [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] first, 1 point in [imgsmall=skills/malphite/w.png] at lvl 4, then max [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] if you are trading blows often or having trouble in lane vs an autoattacker.

The Build Order/Items is not definite, other items and orders work as well. These are guidelines of good items to get and what order to get in. Build against your lane opponent, then build against their team. Be versatile with your items and ask yourself why you are buying this item! Like building merc treads vs few cc or single target cc and heavy ad is not a wise choice! [highlight]CHECK OUT CHAMPION MATCH UP SECTION TO LEARN HOW TO BUILD AGAINST AND WIN YOUR LANE[/highlight] Starting Items: [item=cloth-armor][item=health-potion5] or [item=boots-of-speed][item=health-potion3] Core Items: [item=ninja-tabi] or [item=mercurys-treads] + [item=philosophers-stone]+ [item=giants-belt] + [item=abyssal-scepter] Final Items: Vs Balanced Team: [item=ninja-tabi] or [item=mercurys-treads] + [item=frozen-heart][item=sunfire-cape][item=abyssal-scepter][item=rylais-crystal-scepter][item=randuins-omen] Vs Heavy Ap damage team:[item=mercurys-treads] + [item=shurelyas-reverie][item=abyssal-scepter][item=sunfire-cape][item=force-of-nature][item=rylais-crystal-scepter] Vs Heavy Ad damage team:[item=ninja-tabi] + [item=frozen-heart][item=sunfire-cape][item=abyssal-scepter][item=randuins-omen] [item=guardian-angel] ITEMS TO CONSIDER AND EXPLANATION: [img=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png] - GOOD IF NO ONE ELSE BUILDING ONE [img=items/chalice-of-harmony.png] - GOOD VS AP/HYBRID IN LANE THAT YOU WANT TO HARASS DOWN! [img=items/dorans-ring.png] - GOOD ITEM TO PRESS ADVANTAGE/SNOWBALL WITH [img=items/force-of-nature.png] - VS LOTS OF AP [img=items/rabadons-deathcap.png] - AP MALPHITE IF YOU GO MID [img=items/rod-of-ages.png] - GOOD ON AP/HYBRID MALPH IF YOUR TEAM NEEDS AP DAMAGE AND OPPONENT MOSTLY AP [img=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] - REALLY GOOD ITEM ON MALPH. GOOD TO INITIATE WITH. I USUALLY GET THIS ITEM! BUT WILL REPLACE IT WHEN I HAVE 6 ITEMS [img=items/sorcerers-shoes.png] - SNOWBALL ITEM IN LANE. USUALLY DONT GET [img=items/thornmail.png] - IF THE ENEMY AD(s) ATTACK YOU FREQUENTLY. IF NOT, ITEMS TO REDUCE ATTACK SPEED! STICK TO THEM! [img=items/trinity-force.png] - TROLL ITEM. BUT IT WORKS [img=items/warmogs-armor.png] - IF YOU REALLY NEED TO SURVIVE. BEST SURVIVAL ITEM [img=items/zhonyas-hourglass.png]- GOOD ON AP MALPH

Read Item Builds before reading this From level 1-4, I play conservatively and do not harass the enemy much. If the enemy comes to harass me, I will trade blows with him. However, if the enemy doesn't harass me, I will harass the enemy with Q, but also making sure I have almost full mana each time I harass. I try not to use most of my mana early game. Once [imgsmall=skills/malphite/q.png] or [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] is Level 3 when I am level 5, I start trying to to my spells more often to try to gradually lower the enemy hp. After level 5 is when I start playing Malphite more aggressively and using my spells more often. However, never harass down to the point where you don't have enough mana for [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png][imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] combo After level 6, the following options are availble: 1. Gank mid Lane if your lane is pushed 2. Burst down the enemy for a kill if you can 3. Call for Jungler gank( make sure you have enough mana) since ganks with Malph's ult are devestating Tip: Pink ward to destroy your opponent's ward to secure ganks

Malphite is a great roamer and an awesome presence for early on teamfights. After level 8 or 9, I almost always have ganked mid lane at least once with my [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png] After securing a kill in mid lane, go for dragon. Or when you back to town and your lane opponent is unaware, go and alert your teammates to try to secure dragon. I feel mid game is Malphite's strongest point

I buy a lot of wards late game since Malphite is not as item dependent as Ad/Ap carries etc, especially after frozen heart/abyssal/giant's belt. Keep this in mid and keep wards with you Malphite doesn't split push well so I generally stick with team, especially with the support/AD carry, as a means of protection

Read the skills section before reading this Malphite is devastating in teamfights and I think teamfighting is his forte if played correctly. Malphite's [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png] and [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png] effectively disables the enemy for 1.5 seconds and then heavily reduce their attack speed.. With that said, I want to use my ult when my teammates are near so that they can follow up with damage after my stun OR so the enemy cannot deal much damage to my teammates due to my reduction of their attack speed. If your team can almost certainly win a teamfight, don't be afraid to just ult and force a fight even if your teammates cannot immediately follow up. In situations of losing or a tie, I save my ult. I don't force fights if my teammates cannot follow up well. In these situations, I will use my skills including ult to peel enemies if they are melee autoattackers that can kill my backline. Otherwise, I ult to dive enemy AD carry and another enemy if I know my teammates can follow up and devastate their backline. Malphite is best vs stationary AD carries( like [imgsmall=champ/kogmaw.png] rather than [imgsmall=champ/ezreal.png]) and Melee autoattackers( like [imgsmall=champ/tryndamere.png]) since Malphite can stick to them and effectively reduce their damage output. Reducing damage output of your enemy is your pirmary role vs Balanced/AD heavy team comps. So normally, don't go off chasing AP/supports! In most teamfights, after your ult, stick to the AD you ulted until he runs off( do not chase in most cases) In teamfights, I try to ult a group of atleast 2 people( including an AD of either melee or ranged). I rather ult an AD ranged + AD melee rather than a group of tank,ap, and support. If the enemy has 2 melee attackers ( including an auto attacker) that rush my team's backline, I will use my ult to help save my AD carry and effectively reduce their damage. Since melee auto attackers ( like [imgsmall=champ/masteryi.png] and [imgsmall=champ/tryndamere.png], champions like [imgsmall=champ/riven.png]/[imgsmall=champ/leesin.png] are considered more like AD bursts/casters) are not in favor and not played much right now, I usually use Malphite's ult on the enemy's ranged carry. [highlight]Last note[/highlight]: Do not get hasty with your ult because you see a group of people together. Use it to mitigate damage or if you team have an effective follow up.

As requested, this chapter will cover lane match ups, but not all. I will give a number for each match up, with 50 being a tie, 100 being hardest, 1 being easiest. Afterwards, there will be a dash and some suggested items to get during laning phase. This is my personal opinion [img=champ/akali.png] - 25 - philo, hog, negatron easy lane for the most part. You can outharass and outdamage her early game. [img=champ/chogath.png] - 40 - philo, hog farm fest. Build a Giant belt and Negatron if you are losing lane [img=champ/darius.png] - 60 - Philo, Sunfire Don't stick around and trade blows with him. Q and E then back off [img=champ/fiora.png] - 40 - HoG, Glacial Shroud, Dodge Boots Be aware of her ult and try to avoid being parried. When her parry is on, back off, then attack back [img=champ/gangplank.png] - 30 -Philo, Glacial, HoG Be aware of him early.. Punish him after you get armor, especially glacial [img=champ/garen.png] - 55 - philo, hog, sunfire Be sure to trade blows with him after his spin wears off. Garen's sustained damage is poor [img=champ/irelia.png] - 50 - philo, hog, chain vest back away when her w is activated [img=champ/jarvaniv.png] - 40 - philo, glacial Jarvan not much sustain. so mana regen and mana to harass him down. [img=champ/jax.png] - 68 - philo, chain vest After he gets good amount of lifesteal and hexrinker, he wins lane vs Malphite. Either punish him early or call for ganks at lvl 6 or go roam. Malph isn't a jax counter [img=champ/kayle.png] - 65 - philo, hog, glacial buy a lot of hp pots and trade blows( with spells) with him when he harasses u go to brush to avoid further harass after he uses Q [img=champ/kennen.png] - 60 - philo, hog, merc treads I get doran shield 1 or 2 if the enemy Kennen has flat AD runes and chooses to harass me with those early game. Flat AD kennen getting 2 doran blades then build ap is such a pain in lane.. [img=champ/leesin.png] - 55 - philo, hog, glacial a good lee sin will make sure to outsustain you. Philo for hog regen and glacial for mana so you can stay in lane. A passive lane for most part [img=champ/malphite.png] - 50 - Philo, HoG, Negatron Easy 100 percent win lane [img=champ/nasus.png] - 40 - Philo, Frozen Heart Harass him hard and try to win lane before he gets heavy sustain items like spirit visage and chalice of harmony [img=champ/nidalee.png] - 45 - doran shield, philo, doran shield glacial I don't mean to start with doran shield. But you want some armor for her early harass and hp for tiger form [img=champ/olaf.png] - 65 - doran shield, doran shield, philo, sunfire Relatively hard lane for Malphite due to true damage.. But with good regen and armor, you can survive fine [img=champ/pantheon.png] - 35 - Doran shield, philo, glacial easy lane, especially when you have philo and glacial. You can harass him down with your Q + E combo Buy a lot of pots though.. and be sure to start using pots when he starts harassing you. Pantheon can burst you are at low hp, so try to keep your hp up [img=champ/renekton.png] - 52 - Doran shield, philo, glacial Farm fest for most part. Just don't walk straight up to him so he can get him full combo off. Grab a lot of hp pots for this guy's harass as well [img=champ/riven.png] - 55 - philo, chain vest, hog, dodge boots Malphite doesn't counter Riven imo. When she Es close to you and about to W.. Use your E before her W lands and then Q when she starts backing away. Don't lose trades [img=champ/rumble.png] - 70 - , philo, negatron, giant belt I hate this guy.. When Rumble enters danger zone, don't directly confront him or risk yourself. Wait for it to recede or him to overheat [img=champ/singed.png] - 65 - philo, negatron, hog you can't do much in this lane unless your jungler gives you an early advantage. Otherwise, free farm for singed [img=champ/teemo.png] - 40 - doran shield, philo, glacial you can easily gain dominance in this lane by harassing after lvl 7. Play safe before hand and keep up in levels. Teemo lacks sustain and is squishy. Easy target for Malphite in teamfights and in lane [img=champ/tryndamere.png] - 40 - Chain vest, Philo, glacial, HoG Activate w, use e, then start pummling him when he tries to last hit Generally i play conservative early.. you will win lane eventually. Don't risk yourself early [img=champ/shen.png] - 45 - philo, hog, sunfire I generally refrain from harassing Shen randomly with Q, but rather punish him when he tries to auto attack to last hit.. then I ground slam, auto, Q, start autoing your ult disrupts his [img=champ/udyr.png] - 55 - philo - hog, null mantle, sunfire pretty much a farm fest... I see a lot of Udyr activating Q before even stunning, just back off when they activate Q and use Q to run off if they activate bear [img=champ/vladimir.png] - 40 - doran ring, philo, abyssal this lane actually pretty easily for malphite. Harass him after level 3-4. Be SURE to auto him. Vladmir doesn't become strong until after spellvamp and levels or level advantage. You can punish him before then and gradually snowball [img=champ/warwick.png] - 60, philo, , chalice Chalice if your best bet if you wanna harass down Warwick. E , auto , q auto, etc back off before his Q refreshes. Back off, shield back up, go back to harass [img=champ/wukong.png] - 40 - philo, glacial harass him down [img=champ/yorick.png] - 60 - philo, chalice, dodge boots Hybrid Damage, his W + E is magic. After he gains level and if he is good, he might try this combo : W, walk up, auto, q, auto auto, E then back. Thus Chalice for early magic harass, and dodge boots for later

Remember that Malphite is primarily served as a counter pick. Pick Malphite vs heavy AD/leaning towards AD teams with a stationary AD carry and/or melee auto attacker. Coupled with [imgsmall=skills/malphite/e.png], [imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png], [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png], Malphite is a deadly force for auto attackers. I hope you enjoyed and learned from this Guide. Feel free to leave suggestions or start up discussions with others in the comments below. Thank you for reading, - Everlasting
