This guide is on how to play Zilean like a carry in a solo lane. This is not a support guide, and Zilean support playstyle/item build is much different. Because of his ability to not only do insane amounts of early-mid game damage AND insane utility, Zilean is definitely one of the best AP carries in the game.

Flat mana regen yellows for early game, as later game you shouldn't run into many mana problems with blue buffs. Magic pen reds to help with bomb damage, and flat AP quints or Magic pen quints, depending on personal preference. Remember that AP runes will be affected by deathcap's 30% AP boost, as well as helping your ultimate to heal for more HP when the target is rezzed. Finish with AP blues for early game dominance, or CDR blues for late game dominance. I personally prefer AP blues because I find that Zil runs into mana problems early game if you are spamming his abilities.

[title][img=skills/zilean/p.png] Passive: Heightened Learning[/title] [number]Increases experience gain of all allied champions by 8%.[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Really OP passive, allows you to give your team an experience advantage by just having you alive and in the game. Not much else to say about it. [title][img=skills/zilean/q.png] Q: Time Bomb[/title] [number]Zilean places a time-delayed bomb on a target. After 4 seconds this bomb will detonate, dealing 90 / 145 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+90% of ability power) magic damage to all surrounding enemies. Cooldown 10 seconds Cost 70 / 85 / 100 / 115 / 130 mana Range 700 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Your only source of damage. Combined with your W, you can land a nasty double combo for an insane amount of damage early-mid game. Has a nice range, and you can safely land these from outside auto-attack ranges of most if not all carries, allowing for some easy harassment. Also, note that you can use this ability on allied heroes/minions to harass enemies without being in range of them. [title][img=skills/zilean/w.png] W: Rewind[/title] [number]Reduces all of Zilean's other spell cooldowns by 10 seconds. Cooldown 18 / 15 / 12 / 9 / 6seconds Cost 50mana Range 600[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Basically resets your Q, allowing you to double bomb for a ton of damage. Reduces the cooldown on your E as well as your ult, so CDR combined with this ability can make all your spells insanely fast cooldowns. [title][img=skills/zilean/e.png] E: Time Warp[/title] [number]Zilean slows an enemy champion's movement speed or increases an allied champion's movement speed by 55% for 2.5 / 3.25 / 4 / 4.75 / 5.5 seconds. Cooldown 20seconds Cost 100mana Range 700[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Combined with blue buff, you can basically spam your W and keep this ability off cooldown. Usually in teamfights you are only going to want to use it to slow the enemy down, and when it is a 3v1 situation use this ability to slow the enemy down so they will have less time to make it towards their teammates. Also, boost an ally that can slow/disable like Alistar when you are mopping the enemy team up so they can get positioning to finish runners. [title][img=skills/zilean/r.png] R: Chrono Shift[/title] [number]Marks the target with a protective time rune for 7 seconds. If the target would take lethal damage, they are instead transported back in time regaining 600 / 850 / 1100 (+200% of ability power) of their health. Cooldown 180 / 160 / 140 seconds Cost 200 mana Range 900 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] The hardest ability to use well on Zilean. Though it has a long range, knowing when to ult and who to ult can decide if your team will win a teamfight or not. The target that you ult needs to be a target of importance. Also, in a teamfight the target should have some mitigation so they don't just die right away after you ult them. Using your ult when the target is too high will make the other team just switch targets and render your ult useless, while saving your ult until a target is too low is risky as you might get stunned/silenced or they might get knocked out of range. Or you might just plain miss it and they die.

Your skill order will consist of prioritizing R, then Q, then W, then E. [imgsmall=skills/zilean/r.png] allows your ultimate to resurrect targets with higher hp on lower cooldown, which can be devastating in teamfights. [imgsmall=skills/zilean/q.png] gives you lane harassment and kill potential. [imgsmall=skills/zilean/w.png] allows you to reset all your cooldowns, and leveling it next will allow you to spam your abilities when you acquire a blue buff. Keep [imgsmall=skills/zilean/e.png] at rank 1 until you have to level it because that temporary slow/speed boost should be enough to accomplish what you are trying to achieve by using it.

Your strengths rely in your early game. Your bombs will be doing insane amounts of damage before the other team gets any MR. Use this to your advantage to clear waves quickly and help your teammates in other lanes, or harass the enemy in your lane and deny them farm or kill them.

Mid game people should start acquiring MR so your bombs will be doing less damage, but you will still be doing tons of damage, and your ultimate will start having more of an impact on the game. Save your teammates where you can to prevent the other team from getting farm, and get good positioning so you can be relevant in the game.

Use bombs to assist in damage, but don't overextend in team fights as you are a carry and you will probably be fairly easy to focus. Instead, sit back, use bombs, slows, etc, and try to get good positioning in team fights to allow yourself to land those ultimates at key times that will turn the tides of most battles.
