Hello readers! Sycho Sid here for another guide. My "guide-making debut" started out with my Lee Sin jungling guide. After it was published, people writing comments asking me about how strong Lee Sin was as a laner, and instead of just giving them a one sentence response, I wrote another thorough guide on Laning as the blind monk. I received really good feedback and had people asking me very thoughtful questions, which showed that people actually took the time to read through these guides. It's a great feeling to know that my time and effort was not wasted. So here I am today, writing another guide. This time, I will be writing about one of my favorite and most played champions for this season - phoenix jungle Udyr. For those who haven't seen my Lee Sin guides or want to see the updated versions adjusting to the mastery changes, the links are provided below. [highlight]"Every blind man needs a guide!" series:[/highlight] [number]Jungling vol. 1: http://solomid.net/guides.php?g=3091 Laning vol. 2: http://solomid.net/guides.php?g=3158[/number] By the way, I stream from time to time late at night or on the weekends! I also upload videos of little clips from some of my games that I feel are worth watching. I also upload videos that I will be including in my guides, so feel free to subscribe to my stream and/or youtube if you like what's on there. Udyr is no doubt an amazing champion. His skillset and design are what drew me towards him. At first, I really didn't enjoy playing him because I had no idea how to build him. In my noob days, =I would rush a Madred's Bloodrazors and expect to kill everything, only finding out that I would blow up in a matter of seconds. NOW, I realized that he is a tanky menace who can dish so much damage. He's one of those champions who, when in the right hands, is threatening to the point where the enemy team just wants/needs to focus him down. The problem with this "solution" is that it takes days to kill him, and when you are focusing Udyr, his team will destroy you. Anyway, for a champion with no true ultimate, he is no less dangerous than a fed Lee Sin.

It is my firm belief that Phoenix stance is way better and more efficient in the jungle than Tiger stance. Its active and passive give you a stronger [imgsmall=items/sunfire-cape.png] effect along with a powerful AOE burst with every third attack, which allows you to mow through the jungle at record time. Tiger stance also provides an extremely heavy burst of damage, but it is single target only. This is the reason why it is so strong in lane. You can take off chunks of your lane opponent's health bar every few seconds without pushing your lane, allowing you to zone them out almost completely. To sum it all up, generally speaking, [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] = [highlight]JUNGLE[/highlight] [imgsmall=skills/udyr/q.png] = [highlight]LANE[/highlight] DISCLAIMER: Phoenix Lanedyr is capable of just as much damage as Tiger Lanedyr with just as much zoning power. It all depends on your lane opponent. If the enemy is very tanky/armor-heavy ([imgsmall=champ/chogath.png][imgsmall=champ/nasus.png][imgsmall=champ/singed.png]), then [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] would be more effective in lane. It also allows you to counterpush them. The thing about [imgsmall=skills/udyr/q.png] is that it is just a lot easier to land as opposed to 3 full hits of [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] to maximize your damage output. Okay, now onto masteries!

The runes that I use provide you: [.] 25% Attack Speed [.] 13 Armor [.] 24 Magic Resist at level 18 Before the patch, I used to substitute the attack speed quintessences for movement speed ones, but as I mentioned in the masteries section, the "Initiator" mastery allows me to use my current runes. I believe that they are all best in slot for optimal jungle performance, but whether you want movement speed quints or not is up to you. With the quints, you start with exactly 350 movespeed. Without them, you start with 336, which is not bad at all. Either way, once you have boots, you will be faster than everybody else with [imgsmall=skills/udyr/e.png].

[title][img=skills/udyr/p.png] Passive: Monkey's Agility[/title] [number]Entering a stance grants Udyr 10% attack speed and 3% dodge for 5 seconds. This effect can stack.[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] The attack speed bonus is a reason why jungling with phoenix makes so much sense. Having a potential +30% attack speed and 9% dodge chance allows you to clear your jungle really quickly while maintaining a healthy hp bar. BUT... careful when spamming your spells early in your jungle without blue buff. You will run out of mana. [title][img=skills/udyr/q.png] Q: Tiger Stance[/title] [number]Activation: On his next attack, Udyr swipes at his target, dealing normal attack and dealing 150% of his attack damage + 30 / 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 extra damage over 2 seconds as magic damage. In addition, It increases attack speed 5% less than passive for 5 seconds. Persistent Effect: Udyr's attack speed is increased by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%. Half of this is persistent, the other half is activated for 5 seconds. Cooldown 6 seconds Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] As mentioned earlier, it is better for "Lanedyr". Later on in the game when you actually have at least one point into it, you can take out towers, dragons, barons, buffs, etc..., so quickly by just switching between [imgsmall=skills/udyr/q.png] and [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png]. [title][img=skills/udyr/w.png] W: Turtle Stance[/title] [number]Activation: Udyr gains a temporary shield that absorbs 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+50% of ability power) damage. Persistent Effect: Udyr's attacks cannot crit, but he restores 10/12/14/16/18% of his damage as health and 5/6/7/8/9% of his damage as mana. Cooldown 6 seconds Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Turtle Stance gives you so much durability/sustainability. Right when you think you're running out of mana or find yourself needing to heal, you can just activate this skill and slowly leech it all back. When combined with [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png], you will be able to continue pushes and recall less frequently, thus maximizing your time. [title][img=skills/udyr/e.png] E: Bear Stance[/title] [number]Activation: Udyr gains 15 / 18 / 21 / 24 / 27% increased movement speed for 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 seconds. Persistent Effect: Udyr mauls his target with such force that they are stunned for 1 second. This effect cannot occur on the same target for 6 seconds. Cooldown 6 seconds Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] THIS SKILL LET'S YOU CHASE PEOPLE OR RUN LIKE A MADMAN. PATTY CAKE DEM HOES. PROTECT DEM CARRIES OR CHARGE THEIRS. [title][img=skills/udyr/r.png] R: Phoenix Stance[/title] [number]Activation: Udyr sends out pulsing waves of fire dealing 15/25/35/45/55 (+25% of ability power) magic damage each second to nearby enemies for 5 seconds. In addition, Udyr's ability power is increased by 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 / 48 and his attack damage is increased by half of that amount. Persistent Effect: Every third attack, Udyr engulfs enemies in front of him in flame, dealing 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 (+25% of ability power) magic damage. Cooldown 6 seconds Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is the whole point of this guide. Your bread and butter. The nipple to your areola. The keys to your car. This skill is what gets Udyr running! The skill itself offers so much. At level 9, the active effect will make you deal 55(+12)magic damage per second for 5 seconds (so 335 magic damage total), not taking magic resist in account though. Your AD will be increased by 24, making you hit even harder, in addition to the 200(+12) damage burst with every third attack. Talk about packing heat! When you gank at level 4 along with red buff, you will be guaranteed a kill or at least force the enemy to blow a summoner spell or two if done so correctly.

As mentioned, starting out with [imgsmall=items/cloth-armor.png][imgsmall=items/health-potion5.png] gives Udyr so much versatility while jungling. The thing about phoenix Udyr is that he does not necessarily need a lantern to jungle effectively, so by starting out with a [imgsmall=items/cloth-armor.png], you have a few choices on what to build that into. Here are two possible builds: [highlight]Against heavy AD team:[/highlight] [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png][imgsmall=items/ninja-tabi.png][imgsmall=items/wits-end.png][imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png][imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png][imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] For this build, I would use the cloth armor to make a lantern. The 12 extra armor is very powerful against an AD-heavy team and the lifesteal will allow you to tank/exchange hits with the enemy team for a longer period of time. If you feel you don't need the extra armor immediately, then feel free to just make [imgsmall=items/madreds-razors.png] and invest that 600g to make a quicker [imgsmall=items/recurve-bow.png], which you will then use to make [imgsmall=items/wits-end.png]. Once you have your [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png], you will truly be a force in teamfights. [highlight]Against heavy AP team:[/highlight] [imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png][imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png][imgsmall=items/wits-end.png][imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png][imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png][imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] In this second build, you are going to keep the cloth armor till after you get tier 1 boots and your Wits End. After this, turn that cloth armor into an Aegis! I am a huge fan of junglers buying Aegis for your team. Of course you want to discuss with your support player about who will buy the Aegis, but if you're closer to getting it than they are, just buy it first! They could use the money on [imgsmall=items/sight-ward.png] or [imgsmall=items/oracles-elixir.png]. Notice that in this build, you will have a huge amount of hp and I even through in [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png]. This is because when you're against a team with multiple AP threats, your team needs to be durable. [imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png] is one of the most cost-efficient items in the game, and it provides an armor/magic res/attack damage aura to every teammate around you. The [imgsmall=items/shurelyas-reverie.png] is there so that you and your team can escape safely or just destroy them in the teamfight. Now that we have discussed the reasoning behind those item builds, let's talk about the items in both builds: [imgsmall=items/wits-end.png] [highlight]Wit's End[/highlight] This item is just incredible on Udyr. Every single stat on this item benefits Udyr in a major way, and with maxed stats, it is also extremely cost-efficient. I believe it was Jatt of Team Dignitas who came up with the idea of rushing it on him. I'm not sure as to his reasoning, but I usually rush it whenever I'm against a team that's heavy on magic damage. I should also note that if you get an early [imgsmall=items/recurve-bow.png] after your boots, you will such a large advantage over the enemy jungler. You can take all of his wraiths whenever they pop up in a matter of seconds. As the game goes on, he'll probably never be able to grab his wraiths again until 15 minutes into the game! (Not even kidding. I've done it multiple times). If you guys haven't guessed yet, this item is CORE on Udyr. [imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png] [highlight]Trinity Force[/highlight] This item has always great on Udyr. Like [imgsmall=items/wits-end.png], you benefit from every stat that Trinity Force provides. I'll talk about these components individually: [imgsmall=items/sheen.png] You'll be switching stances every couple seconds, so you'll be getting these procs just as often. The mana boost will also make it really hard to run out of mana in teamfights and the 25 AP helps out [imgsmall=skills/udyr/w.png][imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png]. [imgsmall=items/phage.png] Phage provides durability, attack damage, and if you proc a slow, your enemy will be in a heap of trouble. [imgsmall=skills/udyr/e.png] and the slow from phage guarantee kills. [imgsmall=items/zeal.png] Movement speed... attack speed... who doesn't want these things? I wouldn't say that [imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png] is necessarily a core item on Udyr though since I almost never rush it. It's total gold cost is simply too high and you'll be pretty squishy up till at least mid-late game. I always get this later on though. [highlight]NOTE:[/highlight] I know that I provided so many other "optional" items on Udyr, but these builds are usually the ones I go with. Anyway, these are the situations in which I would buy these items: 1) [imgsmall=items/quicksilver-sash.png] is very situational. I would usually get this if I'm getting targeted by things ults like: [imgsmall=champ/malzahar.png][imgsmall=champ/mordekaiser.png][imgsmall=champ/skarner.png]. 2) If the game is incredibly easy/"trollish", I usually buy damage items like [imgsmall=items/hextech-gunblade.png] or [imgsmall=items/malady.png]. They aren't the worst choices, and actually give you a good amount of damage! 3) In dire need of MR? [imgsmall=items/force-of-nature.png] is a possible choice, but I like [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] on Udyr a lot more. The extra life of course makes you very tanky, but also because the spell shield shuts down casters who rely on their stuns. ie. [imgsmall=champ/annie.png][imgsmall=champ/brand.png][imgsmall=champ/sion.png] 4) If you need some armor/damage, go with [imgsmall=items/sunfire-cape.png] (You should only get this early though, as the magic damage gets weaker as the game goes on. 5) If their team has really annoying autoattackers that are just f'ing you up, you have two options. [.] [imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png] GREAT against champs who deal %health dmg such as [imgsmall=champ/kogmaw.png] and [imgsmall=champ/vayne.png] [.] [imgsmall=items/thornmail.png] DESTROYS champs like [imgsmall=champ/caitlyn.png] and [imgsmall=champ/tryndamere.png] Also note that these two items can be used together for the ultimate AD defense!

[number]Jungling[/number] as phoenix Udyr is actually quite simple. It's really all about positioning so that you can maximize the damage from your third hit. In the video below, you will see the basic path of an Udyr jungle. Pay attention to how I position myself after each hit. [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bPqZ762Jmk[/youtube] The video above is probably the most common route that most Udyr's take. However, even if you know this, I would be really careful if trying to invade him. Even at low levels, he has amazing durability, damage output, and of course, insane clear time. He can catch you while you are trying to take his wraiths and really set you far behind. Udyr absolutely excels at [number]counterjungling[/number] for the same reason that he is such a quick jungler. If you don't know by now, you should shoot yourself. Just kidding, but no really. [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] PHOENIX ALLOWS YOU TO COUNTERJUNGLE LIKE AN ANIMAL. No pun intended. This next video shows a standard counterjungling path. [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjYYWiEIPQ0[/youtube] This video does not demonstrate the quickest counterjungle, but that is simply because I did not have anybody to leash the blue golem for me. If I did have a leash, I would've killed golem around 2:10 or so with almost full hp, depending on the strength of the leash. In that video, my skill order was RWR, but when counterjungling, you may want to get RWE, or Bear Stance at level 3. As I said about the standard jungle video above, you are not limited to what was shown in the video. For example, say you are jungling against [imgsmall=champ/leesin.png], and he started at his double golems and ganked immediately. You can invade and take his blue buff while he wastes his time. Once you get the blue, you want to write down the timer (red and blue buff spawns every 5 minutes), and contest every single blue from then on for the rest of the game. This last video shows Udyr's true strength in the jungle. Watch as the Twisted Fate and I basically win a 2v4 due to my damage output with [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] and red buff, and I actually get away because of [imgsmall=skills/udyr/w.png]! [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaI5ztzMvCI[/youtube]

You, as the tank, are supposed to sack up and get in those teamfights and even initiate if you have to! The main thing that you need to know with all teamfights is when to commit! You need to know when to enter the teamfight and what your objective is. Once the fight has started, you have two options: 1) Protect your carries OR 2) Charge at theirs I usually choose option #2, but it also depends on the positioning of your carries compared to that of theirs. If you are truly strong at that given time, you should be able to completely split their team by just charging in like a boss. Their carries can't help but run away. If they don't, then they're just gonna get beat down by your awesome phoenix stance! Though Udyr excels at zoning out their carries, he is also great at protecting his own, and this is duo mainly to [imgsmall=skills/udyr/e.png]. If you see your carry in danger, simply run up to the guy, and slap him in the back of the head and activate [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png]. They should be in a world of hurt right now because that one second that you stun them gives your carry extra time to focus and scare that tank off. As you can see, with both your [imgsmall=skills/udyr/e.png] and [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] alone, you will be very disruptive, but what I haven't talked about is combining your skills with your items! [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] slow is great for peeling the enemy off your carries, as well as slowing down theirs. [imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png] will give you that extra speed, durability, slow and damage to just dominate the other team. [highlight]NOTE:[/highlight] I have just talked about using your Bear and Phoenix stances in teamfights, but do NOT forget about [imgsmall=skills/udyr/w.png]! If the enemy team begins to focus you, feel free to alternate between one of those stances and Turtle stance! [imgsmall=skills/udyr/q.png] is also a great cleanup skill like when it's just you 1v1 with one of their champions, just alternate between this and [imgsmall=skills/udyr/r.png] to finish them off.

This concludes my jungle phoenix Udyr guide. I don't feel that it is my best work, but as always, feel free to let me know what you think about it in the comments section below. If you have questions, ask them! Critiques? Yes, please. If anybody has any suggestions or guide requests, I'll be glad to read them as well. Below you will find a newly added "Replays" section!

I used to upload on clgaming's replay section, but now LoL Replay made it SO CONVENIENT! Big props to them! Anyways, here are some replays: --------------------------------------------------------- [number]Udyr vs Nocturne 10-0-4[/number] http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/8335/ This is handsdown one of the most solid games I have played as Udyr. Had complete control of the game. [number]Udyr vs saintvicious's Amumu[/number] http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/8336/ Our Swain was fed out of his mind. The game was won until saint called a great 18minute Baron call. They jumped ahead of that fight for baron, and 3 kills to our 1. We still won the game, but it should've been a 20minute surrender instead of a 33minute nexus. Moral of the story - Baron changes games. [number]Udyr INVINCIBLE[/number] http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/8337/ The "Udyr gone wild" 2v4 jungle invasion video that I posted above is an excerpt from this game. The rest of the game is pretty lulz, so it's really up to you if you want to watch it or not. [number]Udyr vs Shyvana. How to control a game.[/number] http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/8339/ Despite both junglers being exceptionally quick, I outjungled her like crazy. I completely dominated her in the jungle and controlled the game. [number]Udyr vs Shaco. No Red, No problem.[/number] http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/8341/ After getting my wolves and blue, I invaded his bottom jungle at the price of my red buff. Didn't slow me down though. Shaco just gets outclassed by Udyr. Special guest appearance by bigfatlp. [number]Udyr in 4v5 for first 8 minutes.[/number] http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/8346/ Apparently, The Rain Man decided to go sleep, forgetting that he was in queue until Xpecial woke him up to tell him that he was in-game. He randoms Brand with flash/ignite because he was Kassadin the game before. Watch as we still manage to pull a win.
