Hello! This is my first written guide and I want to share my way of playing Malzahar. Malzahar is my most played caster; he is underrated but lately I see more players picking him. He is a great farmer, he has high AP ratios, he does damage over time (DOT), he has a suppress skill and he floats. EDIT: I've seen a post by RiotStatikk (I think) saying they want to teak Malzahar a bit, especially his insane damage on [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png]. Let's see how this will turn out.

[imgext=http://i55.tinypic.com/szfkpe.jpg] The rune set is a personal preference and it's centered on ability power and magic penetration. Due to Malzahar's high ratios I feel AP runes are better then mana regeneration or CD or HP; more AP = more face melting power. But if you like that extra HP or you feel mana hungry, feel free to change your runes accordingly.

[title][img=skills/malzahar/p.png] Passive: Summon Voidling[/title] [number]After casting 4 spells, Malzahar summons an uncontrollable Voidling to engage enemy units for 21 seconds. Voidlings have 200 + 50 x lvl Health and 20 + 5 x lvl Damage. Voidlings Grow after 7 seconds (+50% Damage/Armor), and Frenzy after 14 seconds (+100% Attack Speed).[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Your Void Edition pet. Helps you farm, push towers and aids you in killing your opponent. Most players underestimate your voidling but he does some nice damage (especially when he is fully grown). You can somehow control it with Malefic Visions (your pet attacks targets affected by it). Note: be careful when you are hiding; your pet isn't the smartest around and he may give your position away. [title][img=skills/malzahar/q.png] Q: Call of the Void[/title] [number]Malzahar opens two portals to the void. After a short delay, they fire projectiles which deal 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+80% of ability power) magic damage and silence champions for 1.4 / 1.8 / 2.2 / 2.6 / 3 seconds. Cost 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130mana Range 900[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Your AoE silence and nuke skill. With some coordination (or luck) you can silence the entire enemy team. You need some patience and practice in order to land a decent Q but it's not that hard. The damage is based on the position of your target. For example, if the target is in the center point of Q, he gets hit by both projectiles and receives full damage plus a longer duration of silence. If only one projectile hits the target he only receives half damage and a shorter duration of silence. It is actualy an easy skill to dodge so you should only use it when you're certain the target will stay for the damage. It's a lot harder to hit moving targets with Q but with some anticipation (and practice) you can hit them too. [imgext=http://i51.tinypic.com/2jfc2v6.jpg] Note: you can steal Baron with Call of the Void. [title][img=skills/malzahar/w.png] W: Null Zone[/title] [number]Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy for 5 seconds. The zone damages nearby enemies for 5/6/7/8/9% (+0.01%) of their max health each second (damage to Monsters is capped). Cooldown 16 seconds Cost 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130 mana Range 800 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Your AoE tank killer. Early game it's unnoticeable but late game it hurts a lot (that's why we max W last). You will use it in team fights; it's very avoidable by a single target. The only time you will use W on a single target is when you perform your face melting combo (W+E+R). [title][img=skills/malzahar/e.png] E: Malefic Visions[/title] [number]Malzahar infects his target's mind, dealing 80 / 140 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+80% of ability power) magic damage over 4 seconds. If the target dies during this time, the visions pass to a nearby enemy and Malzahar gains 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 mana. Cost 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120mana Range 600[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Your farming and harassing skill. It helps you last hit, it keeps your mana replenished (try to pass it from creep to creep) and it helps you control your voidling. [title][img=skills/malzahar/r.png] R: Nether Grasp[/title] [number]Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress the target (stuns and disables summoner spells), dealing 250 / 400 / 550 (+150% of ability power) magic damage over 2.5 seconds. Cost 150mana Range 575[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This skill is amazing! This is why Malzahar is such a great 1v1 champion. In a team fight use Nether Grasp to lock down the enemy carry. Your ultimate is the caster version of Warwick's ultimate. You will suppress your target and you will deal a good portion of damage (1.5 AP ratio) combined with Null Zone and Ignite. Quicksilver Sash and some champions (Gankplank, Alistar, Morgana, Sivir, Nocturne, etc) can cancel it. Use it wise though, you will get stunned too! Note: Malzahar can spam his abilities on a creep wave and still get XP/gold even if he is away from that creep wave.

R>E>Q>W 1.[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] 2.[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] 3.[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] 4.[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] 5. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] 6. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] At level 1 level up Q first and cast it at your pool 3 times so that your next cast will summon the voidling. [imgext=http://i55.tinypic.com/vo5vzb.jpg] Put 1 point in W at level 4; this helps your combo at level 6 but it's weak early game and you will level it later. Your combo (which you can fully cast at level 6) consists in [img=skills/malzahar/w.png] + [img=skills/malzahar/e.png] + [img=skills/malzahar/r.png] (+[img=summoners/ignite.png] if it's not on cooldown). If your target is not killed by this, you can finish your dying opponent by casting [img=skills/malzahar/q.png]. [imgext=http://i55.tinypic.com/95z9cp.jpg]

[.] You can start with [imgsmall=items/sapphire-crystal.png] and [imgsmall=items/health-potion2.png]. [.] You can also start with [imgsmall=items/dorans-ring.png]; it's decent but it will delay your build a bit and I feel that [imgsmall=items/health-potion2.png] offer you more effective HP. [.] On your first trip back you will buy [imgsmall=items/boots-of-speed.png] and [imgsmall=items/catalyst-the-protector.png]. These items will boost your survivability and mobility early game. [.] Now you have two options: [number]1.[/number] If you are having a hard time staying in lane against an AP champion, you will upgrade [imgsmall=items/catalyst-the-protector.png] into [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] as a first solid item. The spell shield will minimize the damage you take and it will make you less squishy. [number]2.[/number] If you are owning or getting decent farm, you will rush [imgsmall=items/rabadons-deathcap.png] by getting [imgsmall=items/needlessly-large-rod.png] first and you will get [imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png] too. [.] From here on your item build is situational. If they are stacking magic resistance you will buy [imgsmall=items/void-staff.png]. For additional survivability you can get [imgsmall=items/zhonyas-hourglass.png], [imgsmall=items/rylais-crystal-scepter.png], etc. [title]Notes[/title] [.] I've seen players getting [imgsmall=items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] for more CDR. I don't think CDR is such a great stat on Malzahar. Your skills are mostly DOTs and you won't be doing some crazy burst. In this case I feel that magic penetration (granted by [imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png]) is better then CDR. Also 9 magic penetration (runes) + 20 magic penetration from [imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png] will give you 29 magic penetration which is enough to drop most enemy champions to ~0 magic resistance. [.] If you are having a good game and owning the other team feel free to buy [imgsmall=items/mejais-soulstealer.png]. It's a risky item and keeping stacks in higher elo games is hard but if you are stomping your enemies, you can get it for even more melting power. [.] A nice AP boost item is [imgsmall=items/will-of-the-ancients.png]. I ignored this item for a while but now it seems to offer a nice AP increase (80 AP for you and 30 AP for your team) and some spell vamp. I don't feel spell vamp is that useful on casters except on those who have innate spell vamp like Morgana or Vladimir. [.] Buy [imgsmall=items/elixir-of-brilliance.png] and [imgsmall=items/elixir-of-fortitude.png] to maximize your dps output late game. [.] Buy whenever you can 2-3 [imgsmall=items/sight-ward.png]! It will help you and your team a lot and remember that 1 [imgsmall=items/sight-ward.png] = 3 creeps.

Your early game is simple: you will farm and farm and farm some more. You are one of the best farmers in the game due to [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] which also keeps your mana bar on full. I'd recommend you to farm only with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png]; the rest of your spells are ineffective in the farming process cost/efficiency wise. Your voidling is a great tool here, allowing you to farm from a safe distance. Try to last hit and not push your lane too much. [.] If your lane opponent has a weak early game, like Vladimir for example, try to harass and deny him XP/gold. [.] If your lane opponent is strong early game, like Caitlyn, try to farm creeps as much a possible without getting harassed. Buy 2 wards and ward the river for maximum protection. Try not to overextend too much because you will be forced to use Flash/Ghost due to your lack of an escape mechanism.

This is where you start to shine. After your successful creep farm, you will be most likely able to afford some AP boost, preferably [imgsmall=items/needlessly-large-rod.png], [imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png] and [imgsmall=items/catalyst-the-protector.png]. Your goal is to destroy mid tower, kill your mid opponent, help your jungler do dragon and gank the side lanes. Whenever you see the side lanes pushed, go and support them for a kill. It's very important to aid your lanes as often as you can. It will make your team stronger in the long run!

You still shine! You are running with around 500-600 AP, ~2500 HP and a spell shield. Your high AP ratios on your skills and [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] define you as "The Face Melter". Aid your team in team fights, never wander alone in the jungle as you are prone to being killed. All you can offer is insane damage and this means it's mandatory for you to stay alive and avoid getting focused!

You will NEVER EVER initiate a team fight with Malzahar. You will stay in the back and destroy them from a safe distance. At level 1, when you are protecting your jungler, make sure to take [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png]. You will give your team a great advantage by silencing the other team and make them vulnerable. When hell breaks loose in a team fight, you will lock on the most dangerous enemy champion and melt him with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] and [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png]. When channeling your ultimate you are stunned too so be careful to ulti from a safe position. You will silence them whenever your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] is off cooldown; prioritize [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] on enemy champions like [img=champ/katarina.png] or [img=champ/nunu.png] to cancel their AoE ultimates. Cast [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] on dying enemies and watch them melt by your void powers. Remember to never walk alone since you have no escape mechanism (except [imgsmall=summoners/flash.png]) and you will die most likely.

Pros: - great damage dealer; has the highest AP ratios combined. - can farm like a boss - AoE silence - suppress (can lock down a carry) - decent harasser - he floats and he has a voidling pet Cons: - squishy - no escape mechanism - slow movement speed - team dependent - requires some practice or you can fail like a boss - suppress (you are stunned too) I will add here some champions you may want to watch out for: [.] [img=champ/kassadin.png] This guy is a pain to deal with, especially in mid lane. He can out-harass you and his silence can shut you down a lot faster then your silence will shut him down. His flash ultimate makes him one of the safest casters in LoL; it will be hard for you to unleash your combo on him. Also he has a passive -15% magic damage reduction. [.] [img=champ/leblanc.png] Almost on the same level as Kasasdin. She can silence you, she can burst you down early game (when you are still weak), she can escape your harass easily. Be careful when playing against her. [.] [img=champ/urgot.png] Early game he is a total pain. He can't silence you but he can harass you to death. His Q + E combo is so good at early levels! [.] [img=champ/nidalee.png] She isn't that much of a threat but she is hard to kill. She has a good heal, she is mobile, she can snipe you and she can deal nice damage in her animal form. Don't chase her, she is a natural born escape artist. [.] [img=champ/caitlyn.png] She can harass you from a great distance. Early game she does a decent amount of damage so you may want to play safe against her. [.] [img=champ/morgana.png][img=champ/sivir.png][img=champ/nocturne.png] They have one thing in common: a spell shield. This means they can break your combo. They aren't dangerous (except jungle Nocturne) but they are annoying. [.] [img=champ/gangplank.png][img=champ/alistar.png] these two have abilities of their own that can break your suppress = combo breakers. Not dangerous but annoying. [title]Note:[/title] Your worst enemy is by far [img=items/quicksilver-sash.png]. It's an underrated item but it's the only hard counter to Malzahar. This is pretty much Malzahar's Kryptonite.

This is pretty much my little Malzahar guide. Thank you for your attention and your patience! In my opinion Malzahar is a strong caster who can deal a great amount of damage if played right. I hope it will intrigue you to play him more often. I want to apologize for the eventual grammar mistakes/typos (not a native English speaker). Feel free to ask me questions, comment and rate! Good luck melting faces with your void friend! UPDATE: Nowadays Malzahar isn't a top pick/ban; the caster sphere is dominated by Brand, OPianna (broken champion IMO), Annie (similar version to Brand but requires less skill) and Gragas, Morgana, Zilean to some extent. This doesn't mean Malzahar is bad; he is still good BUT he falls back in terms of AoE DPS. He is a boss in 1v1 fighst but as you can see for yourself the champions I enlisted are better AoE-ers.
