The first question that should be ansewere there is : What is mordekaiser and what isn't he? First and the most importante thing is that he isn't a tank. Even if you build him full tank he still isn't a tank and is very vulnerable to cc before the fight start which means it's going very hard for you to engage. If you build him ap (and i don't think you should be building him tank anymore) you will die very fast while under cc as your shield and spell vamp are your only defenses. However once the teamfight is engage you will be very tanky because they probably won't be able to keep you stun and to burst you down. So you can't tank and you can't really engage (as a tank would be able to do), however with your passive and the spell vamp you will be able to soak a lot of damage and shouldn't fear too much for your life as long as you aren't too badly focus. And while all this damage is beeing wasted on you, you do very strong ap dommage to everyone because all your spells are aoe and destroy everyone if you manage to pick a good ghost. Despite the magic damage you are doing you don't have a lot of burst (as placing masse of spade on the focus is usualy hard) and you don't have any controle beside the slow from rylai. So to resume : mordekaiser isn't a tank, he isn't really an ap carry, if anything he is a ap bruiser. He will do a lot of magic damage and shouldn't be esay to kill. Second question : Where should you lane him? You obviously need a solo lane. I see three reasons to go mid rather than top. [.]Most solo top will win there lane against you if not kill you very esaily [.]Your spell tend to force you to push your lane and this will make you very vulnerable to ganks (remember you have no cc and no escape other than flash) [.]You barely can farm any jungle from top, and you really need them.

What ever you choose you should mostly focus on early/mid game as the farm you get will let you carry late game. [.]Red: Magic pen no other choice, no discussion. Everyone of your spell do magic damages. [.]Yellow: I like hp regen because it will help you a lot if you are having a hard in your lane and even if you are doing good, you will nearly never be full life as when you are high (and with more regen than your opponent it always will be good for you) you will try to trade with the opponent or spam your spells to go take wraiths which will cost you some life. If you know you will be lanning vs a melee or you don't like/have hp regen armor is always a good choice too. Flat hp is an option too (but armor or hp regen are probably better) [.]Blue: here again you should be mid and most mid are ap so magic resist will help you a lot and give you an advantage early vs most lane. Flat mr is better than per level as you really need the magic rerist before you got hextech/wota. Others choices : cdr, cdr/lvl, ap/lvl, magic pen (don't really like magic pen though) [.]Quint: Spell vamp because spell vamp is just too good (seriously spell vamp need some kind of nerf it's just op on morde). Other choice will be flat hp (don't really like them anymore), magic pen (one can be good to have 30 mr with sorc shoes after that it's probably not the best choice), flat hp regen (it's pretty good if you find that you tend to spam or get harass a little too much), flat ap (probably the best choice after spell vamp), movement speed (it's always good but probably not that good).

R and E should be max first and there is simply no other choice for it. R is the only reason you will pick morde, and even if the target doest die it will heal you for a lot a force them to back or at least be very carefull. E will be your main damage dealer, your only harass (as only range spell) and should be use as often as you can on any champion you can touch. No discussion possible on this two spell, they are your two best spells and most usefull/versatile ones it's your bread and butter and you should remember that. Concerning Mace of Spade and Creeping Death i'm not really sure one is better than this other, and it might depend on how you like to play. However the issue with Mace of Spade is that you need to be in melee range to use it (on multiple targets it's pretty esay for them to dodge) and mordekaiser animation is pretty long so from time to time it might be a probleme. I also think that Creeping Death is more usefull as you can assist teammates when you wouldn't be in range without and in teamfight it actualy can change quite a lot as you probably never will be able to Mace of Spade the focus. So it's your choice but i strongly suggest going for Creeping Death

The build is for mordekaiser mid only, and if you have to go top you might need change it a little and i will try to explain as much as i can so you can make the best choice what ever is happening (even if the more i play the less choice there seems to be). [title]Starting items: [/title] + Not much choice there, you will need boots to be safe against ganks and to harass AP mid. If you aren't getting gank too much you should be able to stay in lane until 1200 and get in your first trip back. If not buy +(no more than 4pots but don't be too greedy and buy some you need to farm a lot and therefore stay a lot in lane). Depending on when you will have to back a 2nd time buy + if you can't buy the 2 of them at one get the one you prefere or the one that feels more right doesn't really matter. Once you have your shoes and wota you will need to decide what you will do next depending and what is happening. [title]Core Build:[/title] First case : You have 2 ap in your team and you are against 2 ap (and you kinda have a hard time vs the ap mid or the one top often gank mid) starting with if your lane is really hard because of magic damages. Follow with in that order if you are still a little weak, raba first if you are doing fine. You still can go abyssal vs 2 ap only (a little better if the jungler isn't a tank), or if you have 2 ap in your team and they don't have a tank (top+jungle buisers) Seconde case : you are getting gank a little too much and feels a little weak (which will probably be 70% of your games.) starting with you can start with if you are doing good and don't need the hp and if you have to back before you can buy the belt take the wand first. Following with . Third case if you really dislike not going rabadon first on ap and you are doing very well in lane you can always go: then however if you are doing this well going rylai first shouldn't change your damage by much and will probably deny any possibility for a come back with a really good focus on you. [title]Core build :[/title] (more or less even in that order). [title]Fifth item and sixth, depending on what is happening[/title] Once again you have choices to make. And once again we will see multiple cases :). First one: Everything is going fine for you, you don't get focus too much and you don't need more def than you already got. [.] If you have 2 ap in your team and they don't have too much mr go for [.] If they have a lot of magic resist go for (rarely a good choice for your 5th items as you will probably always need a little more def and you don't need to do that much dommage on the tanks anyway) [.] If none of the above and should be your choice most games (great choice overall, the armor and the use let you survive a lot longer if things aren't going well and 130ap with rabadon is always great.) Seconde one: you are getting focus by a lot of AD dmg. [.] is always a good item depending on how well you can use it and if the armor is enough (50 is not a lot so don't rely too much on it) [.] mostly to counter fed AD carry that focus you. [.] the mana is a little waste but the rest is very usefull. Cdr is really great on mordekaiser sadly you can't often get any item with it. [.] don't really like this item as zhonia nearly do the same for you and give you a lot of ap but it's still a good item and should be build from time to time Thrid one: You are getting focus by magic damage mostly. [.] Is an obvious choice. [.] If abyssal isn't enough or someone (usualy rumble) has it already this item is great but you shouldn't have to build it often. For the 6th items do the same check list than with the 5th items. are also a possibility depending on what you need (each choice explain itself, but i personaly love lichbane which let you one combo ad carry if you can Q on him alone.) You will probably always need a def item. To summarise what ideals builds will look like this : Vs heavy ad: / Vs heavy ap: Vs nothing in particular: Consomables: Use as many health potions as you need early (3 from start, +3 or 4 if you can't take hextech at first trip) because they will help you farm and out level your opponent which is very important for morde. Help your team warding it's always a good thing (wraiths camp to counter jungle a little more safely and see some ganks comming is good). Oracle is expensive, and they are already likely to focus you without i don't think you should get it unless you are fed. Elexirs: Green elexir is pretty much useless so don't by it unless you have money to waste. Red is better but not great so don't buy it (unless you really need it for some reason) before 4th items and i wouldn't advice it before the 5th. Blue is GREAT as i said CDR is good on mordekaiser even if you can't really buy items with it so this elexir (and blue you will get from your kills) are there for it. Try to have one after rabadon for when you will team fight it's not a must have but it is always helpfull.

I would first like to state that i play very aggressively and probably a little too much, the good thing is that when i really take an hedge on a lane i can't lose the game anymore but the bad side is that i tend to feed from time to time, however i still manage to farm enough even when i'm feeding so the game isn't totaly dead (already carryed game with a 0/6 start XD). My experience with mordekaiser goes : A lof of normals pre-season 1 where i was mostly playing him as a tank. In S1 i have 59% winrate with 88 games around 1800-1900 elo in soloQ with 6.3/5.2/5.3 kills/deaths/assist. In S2 i went from 1500 to 1800 (and still going up) with 70% winrate over 70games with 6/5.3/5.7 ratio As you can see my ratios are pretty bad, because playing this overly agressively tend to draw a lot of attention to me and make me die quite a lot :) (if your team is nearby and they use everything to kill you and are still getting out mid life, your team usualy clean everything us but you don't get kills nor assist, same goes when you get perma gank and are still ahead in your lane overall you will have bad stats but still kinda carry your team as your other lane should be winning.) Got an average on 11K gold/game with 185 cs and rarely go over 30minutes. When everything goes right (you aren't failling lanning and junglers aren't helping your opponent too much, you should aimed for 200cs by 20min thx to wraiths.) Also with this playstyle your jungler should never be able to gank mid so you might want to tell him and ask for his wraiths as much as possible.

What is important to keep in mind while lanning with mordekaiser. [.][imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] will be your main harass and your main defense all game long. Use it on champions everytime you can, use it on to kill creeps that you couldn't without, use it to shield yourself from incomming damages, use it to deny your lane, just use it don't try to do cute or skillfull things with it just use it nearly as much as you can. You have no resource so you can spam way more than anyone else, just keep it mind it cost you a little life so when you are low life be a little more cautious with it. [.]Levels are very important to mordekaiser, he scales very well on level (more than most ap) that's the main reason you want a wraith camp before lvl 5 so you can have lvl 5-6-7 (E-ulti-E) before your opponent so you can bully him safely. [.]Be aware of early ganks for two reasons: - You are very weak early without any controle or escape so it's pretty esay to kill you with one or two gank. If you get kill before lvl 6 you will most likely lose your lane and it might be difficult to even stay in lane if you get camp. - The seconde reason is that you need the XP early so badly (and more than most) that if you have back early it will be bad for you. [.]You need a lot of gold early or you won't be able to farm well later on. Before you go at least [smallimg=items/hextech-revolver.png] you are very weak so you really need to not miss many cs early on. Once you got [imgsmall=items/will-of-the-ancients.png] it will be esay for you to farm (just spam your spells and enjoy the gold). If you are doing fine in the first 7level the reste of the lane will mostly be spam [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] and win. Keep this in mind (you need XP/GOLD and spam E) and you should be fine. I will try to explain as much as i can how i lane in the next chapters but i will resume it there : most people are scared of mordekaiser and misjudge his strengts and weakness so bully them as much as you can when you are strong (lvl 1-3-5) and don't get bully when they are stronger ( harder do define, basicly don't let them combo you).

From level 1 to 5 you will try to hit as many [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] as you can while not taking damage, to do so the best way is to wait for them to kill a creep before using E. Try to hit as little creep as you can with [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] unless you need it to shield incomming damage so you don't push your lane which would make you an esay target for the jungler. However yoour lane will probably still be push around lvl 3-4. At his point the best option is to finish to push the lane under the tower so he lose CS and the next wave should result with your lane beeing back to the middle again. If the wraiths are up (and your jungler can have other stuff to do then take them) Before level 5 you used [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] as much as possible on champ and therefore at this point your opponent shoud be already without potion or at least mid to low life. If it's the case and you have no fear of getting gank for any reason try to force him to back but beeing very agressive with E and diving them with [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png]+[imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/r.png]+[imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png] if they are low life and decide to stun under tower (usualy you can force them to back). However as you usualy still fear ganks (if you don't have flash up, or if both laner and jungler have controls) you will have to keep focusing on harassing with E, the good thing with morde is that if they are low life enough they can't really fight has your ulti is alwyas very scary. Plane to back with at least 1200 gold and not too long after him (if you are full life or/and still have pots left when he go back, you can stay and by beeing very agreesive force him to lose cs/ use pots when you don't because you need to shop anyway/ cost him life if he doesn't have pots or even force him to back once again if things are going really well). If you decide to stay in lane for a little longer be always carefull of ganks it would be bad to lose the edge you got early. From lvl 7 to when ever there is no lanning anymore. [.]If things are going badly at this you need to keep doing the same, which is hit [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] on him and focus on CS, usualy the lane will get push by him and you should be able to take the advantage with a gank. Even if you don't just keep focusing on cs and waiting for early teamfights where your ulti will be very strong. [.]If things are going well (or very well) you probably want to start pushing the lane. Keep using [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] it might let you get a kill, keep you safe from gank as mid won't be able to help jungler if he is low life, lose him some cs as he will ne to back. Start doing both wraith camps as soon as they repop, keep mid lane pushing until mid tower is down. WIthout gap closers/control it might be hard to gank side lane, but if the lane is under the tower go for it you don't need to gank to help your lane if they back because they saw you comming with a ward while you lost nothing it's good for your team. This phase is pretty esay if early has be good for you just use everything once it's up and enjoy the damage from your E on champions. You will probably draw a lot of attention to you so don't be too greedy or too confident and don't start feeding mid+jungle and be carefull of ganks from top. In lane most people will be scared of you when they shouldn't and won't be when they should, use it to your advantage and remember that creeps are your friends. If they want to start trading when there are still 6creeps alive go for it as you should win the trade vs most picks.

Your only defense is from passive and spell vamp therefore you don't want and can't engage teamfight, but as you can still tank a lot you should try to be just behind him. Use [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/w.png] on initiator/assasin or bruiser, the defense will help the survive a little much better and they should be in melee rang of the focus and they usualy are the ones with the more people around them so you will do more damage and get more shield. Don't use it on range AP/AD carry and not on the support unless he is beein focus and might survive it. Use [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/e.png] mostly to hit the focus (and as many target as you can in the doing) but if you can't use it everytime you can't, if they are kitting you it's ok you aren't suppose to bring down people running away. If you can't use it carrys go for the most target you can it but always keep it off cd in teamfight (unless you need it to finish someone you will catch) As for [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/q.png] try to use it after a flash on focus if you can't just use it on what ever is in range most team compo will kitt you too hard for you to be able to use it on the best target so just use when you can. Concerning [imgsmall=skills/mordekaiser/r.png] AD carrys are obviously the best target as the ghost will totaly destroy your ennemi team (and give you so much shield that you won't die if you don't die in the 3s following the carry's death) however AD carrys are really scare and will be very hard to get. Ap carry will give you a lot of hp as well as a decent ghost they are also good. This beeing said about the best target, you need to remember that a ghost is better than no ghost so the best target will always be the one that will die. The base damage of your ulti are really good so it will help bring it down faster and alredy transform this fight in 4V6 and it will give you a lot of health from spell vamp and a lot of shield which you will probably be needed early in the figth. To resume : basicly if you don't know any better (or have no reason to do other wise) just spam eveything on cd on anything you can.

15/01/2012 Redid gameplay sections so it's easier to read.

This guide is still in progress and i will remake most of it to reformulate or make it more esay to read with a better presentation. I might also delete some stuff if i said too much and add other things i overlooked. However it is probably going to take me a long time so i post hoping this might help some peoples. Also english isn't my first language and my english isn't that good so there are probably quite a lot of mispelling and syntax errors. I will try to keep it up to date as much as possible and any advice you might have will be welcome. Thank you for reading this far and i hope you will have fun playing mordekaiser.
