Greetings summoner! I'm Varph and this is my guide to Graggy support. Gragas is an incredibly tanky support with fantastic peeling and sustain. In lane he is an obnoxiously tough blob with impressive sustain and engage allowing him to constantly pick fights and come out on top CC'ing whoever he targets whilst soaking up the damage for his lane partner and then healing up before going back in for more. Late game Gragas only gets tankier and forces the enemy team to dedicate time and resources to deal with him before the people he is protecting due to his fantastic peeling, he is literally forcing them to go through him. Two things I'd like to point out are although I am not a support main, it is my second role after mid and I believe myself to be a very strong support player especially when it comes to selfless peelers(Such as ) Also, I'm making this guide assuming you have a basic knowledge on how to support. General Item Build Situational Items -------------------------------------- Every support needs a gold item due to them not only providing a great amount of gold but because they all offer really excellent stats. FotM is the item of choice for Gragas as it is a tank supports wet dream. The gold income from executing minions and heal it offers both you and your laner make it great for pushing lane and sustaining up, additionally it gives the most craved stat for a support in lane, health. The FotM itself is a brilliant item that will fit into a full build without worrying about being replaced since it gives fantastic stats overall, 500 HP - This is the 3rd highest health you can get from an item and health is 1 of the 3 stats you will be wanting on basically every item. 20 HP/5 - Health regen is most noticeable in lane but if you follow this guide you should have your FotM during laning phase. The sustain from this, the spoils of war passive, your own passive and potions will make you a pretty much immovable object( Bring it! \\o/ ) 10% CDR - Cooldown reduction is a much sought after stat for Gragas support, having all your abilities up as much as possible is really important to maximize your peeling with Q/E, it will also have a pretty amazing uptime on your W(you can drink every 4ish seconds maintaining the damage reduction buff for up to every 3 seconds out of 5) Spoils of War - This passive is the gold passive and it is pretty good since it offers more gold than the Ancient coin line along with making pushing easier due to executing high health minions which is especially important for getting level 2 first. Additionally the heal from it is quite significant for sustaining up after trades. Deadly Phalanx - This is the active that comes with FotM, it shields the target(any friendly champion or yourself) for 10% of your max health for 4 seconds, considering how much health you will build, the health from the runes and Gragas' awesome health scaling the fact that it's 10% max health is really good for you since it will be a pretty powerful shield which most of the time you will be using on your teams priority target(mage, marksman, Riven.) or yourself if you are getting focused that hard and will likely die before your squishies start taking damage(this isn't necessarily a bad thing!). After 4 seconds the target that received the shield will release a pulse that will deal 100% of their AD+30% of their AP as magic damage in an AoE, it isn't really anything you should concern yourself with but you can appreciate that it is there since towards late game it is a fairly decent AoE(300-500 damage depending who it is on). Why FotM over ? - This is beat out by FotM for 2 reasons, 1 is that it offers a really poor amount of gold in comparison as it is the lowest of the gold income items and 2 is that it offers nothing to being a tank. The active AoE speed buff is great, infact it is the item defining feature and the 10% CDR is the same but the fact it offers nothing into making you tankier makes it straight up lose against FotM, additionally that speed buff is not as good at protecting teammates in teamfights compared to the Deadly Phalanx shield. ? - For the same reason as ToA this loses to FotM due to the fact it provides nothing in lines of tank stats, getting this item will not make you any harder to kill. The AP on it would be cool since Gragas scales with AP on all 4 of his abilities but it isn't that big of a difference. The gold income of this item if you can make use of it is actually the highest of the gold income items(BY A LOT!) but Gragas being melee with only 1 ranged ability in lane makes it far too difficult for him to get the gold income from this item, it is more a ranged AP support item. -------------------------------------- This is by far the best overall armour item of choice for you. A very nice high 70 armour on it with the 500 health to add will make you a real chore to kill for any physical damage dealer on the enemy team. The best bit about this item is the utility it offers, the active AoE 35% slow that will last for 2 seconds + scaling off of your defences, which you will have a lot of will make it a 3-3.5 second AoE slow which is great for slowing people that are trying to attack your squishies or keeping someone slowed while you wait for assistance to kill them, teamed up with your Q and if you have it an Icebourne Gauntlet you can keep someone crippled pretty much forever. Then there is the other chunk of utility, when you get autoattacked by an enemy his attack speed is slowed by 10%, this is ideal for you since the idea of being a tank is that you will be tanking their damage, this is a major damage reduction for marksmen who will be the majority of the damage dealt to you so increasing the time it takes to kill you buys your team more time. Why Randuins over ? - Sunfire Cape is 350 gold cheaper than Randuins but as far as you are concerned that gold difference is no where near worth the trade off for what Randuins offers. Sunfire has 50 less HP and 25 less armour along with the complete lack of the utility behind Randuins, all that for 350 gold and an unnoticeable burn passive that will deal about 20 damage a second to enemy champions if lucky. The trade off is not worth it since you are about tanking and letting your team do the damage, not dealing the damage yourself. -------------------------------------- Every support needs a sightstone! It is your warding tool, an infinite supply of free wards is every supports wet dream, that and the fact that it offers some HP(150-400) in its item slot is greatly appreciated but nevertheless I shouldn't need to justify this item for you. You are a support and this item is your baby, and no don't sell it late game. -------------------------------------- If the enemy team has an abundance of magic damage threats(A mage, and 1 other, be it an AP top, jungle or heavy magic damage based support) on the enemy team it can be a very good choice to get this over Spirit Visage since it actually offers very similar stats except that it is more teambased than a selfish buy(which I know is generally what supports are meant to be doing). You will personally be losing 15 MR, 50 gold, 10 health regen and the 20% amplified healing passive but in turn you gain a very handy shield for countering AoE burst and a 20 MR/10 HP per 5 aura for your whole team which they will very much appreciate against a magic damage heavy team. -------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- As my choice of boots I go mobility most of the time for 3 reasons. 1. The extra out of combat movement is awesome for supports since you will spend a lot of your time running about the map and warding, it is only better that you do it faster. 2. Cost, they are cheap as dirt! At 800 gold they are a very tempting purchase especially on a support who should typically be the guy with the lowest gold on his team. 3. The downside of Mobo boots is that they only offer 25 movement speed during combat, but as Gragas and a peeler movement really isn't that important for you, you will have no issue sticking to people with your array of tools and to peel for someone you only need to move as fast as the target who is after your squishy who should be slowed to shit and stunned constantly by you. -------------------------------------- As the selfless support that you are your team comes first, Captain boots are actually the best boot enchantment for you since they will boost the speed of all your teammates that are moving towards you by an impressive 10%. The value these offer your team just outweighs the benefit you can get from the other boot enchantments which to be honest are really not all that great for a tank. -------------------------------------- As a support you shouldn't only be providing your team with vision, but denying the enemy team. With a sightstone the warding totem trinket is completely pointless since you can only have 3 wards out at the same time. Everytime you see a ward place you can just remove it and get a free bit of gold, every time you go to ward Baron you can also deny the enemy team vision of it. It has the added bonus that if the enemy team has a stealthing champion you can reveal them with the fully upgraded lens. -------------------------------------- This isn't a support thing, but just something everyone should do. Pink wards last for freaking ever meng, get one. I don't care where you put it, just place it somewhere as long as it isn't blatantly obvious you are going to be getting vision of that place for a very long time. -------------------------------------- Situational Items Although on Gragas I very rarely get this, its value can't be put down. This is a mini cleanse that will remove all CC(except suppression) and heal the target for 150+10% of their max health. Supports get this when their marksman(or mage/assassin) is the victim of a major problematic CC ability and they require it to be dealt with if they wish to survive teamfights. It is worth noting your really have to be good with active items to use this thing effectively since it usually requires you cleanse the right target in a fraction of a second. -------------------------------------- If the enemy team has an abundance of autoattack reliant champions outside of thier marksman, or simply is a full AD champion this item is worth buying. It offers a ridiculous 100 armour to pretty mcuh make you stupidly tanky especially against those full AD teams with this and randuins you will be at a point where you can probably 1vs1 AD assassins(very slowly). The 15% Attack speed reduction aura will really hurt any autoattackers damage output especially if they are attacking you when you already have a Randuins so you will reduce their attack speed by 27.25%. It also offers a very nice 20% CDR which will put you on the 40% cap. If your team is extremely heavy on damage and you are likely the only tank then you should get this over IBG unless they are a magic damage heavy team since you team will likely need to you be tankier rather than dealing more damage. -------------------------------------- Against teams with multiple marksmen you can't go wrong with Thornmail, cheap(2200g) source of 100 armour and a reflection passve that deals 30% of the damage the autoattack deals premitigation back to the offender. This against multiple marksmen with your fantastic durability will have them killing themselves when it comes to attacking you. -------------------------------------- If the enemy team has a large amount of crowd control and magic damage it can be worth investing in these boots although make sure it is worth it as these are the most expensive boots and will cost you 475 gold more than your mobi boots. -------------------------------------- Against pure AD teams these shoes are perfect for you as they are not that expensive(1000g) and the amount of damage reduction the passive on these boots offer is pretty brutal against marksmen and autoattackers.

- As your source of gold you are going to want to get started with this as soon as you can, moment you enter lane you should use the 2 charges you begin with to get the lane pushing in your favour as soon as possible. It is important to note that the way this item allows you to generate gold is by letting you last hit minions without taking your marksmans gold, that in mind you should use your limited charges on the most valuable minions to get the largest amount of gold out of it so always go Siege minion > melee minion > ranged minion. Level 1 - With 808 health level 1 Gragas is one of if not the best level 1 fighter botlane. You should abuse this an engage on the softer of your enemy laners at level 1, it should assert dominance in lane and allow you to get level 2 faster, make sure you warn your marksman of your intentions however, they might be surprised by your aggression so early. Early Lane - With your crazy good tankiness and sustain, you are going to want to be picking fights with your enemies fairly often. Dash to engage on whoever, tank a bit with your marksman shooting your target as well, and then after they back out or you do you can play a bit more passively until you have sustained up with your passive and relic shield. Gragas being an aggressive and mobile support in lane means he wants a similar style AD with him, so it is ideal you have one of the manly AD's with you that can actually do damage and follow up in lane

Sightstone - By now you should have a Sightstone so you best being using it, I've marked on this image the basic 3 places to keep warded at all times. Which in lane bush you ward is fully dependent on what side you are on and how your lane is going based on which side has dominance. Don't forget to sell your warding totem for a lens when u get the sightstone! Dragon - If your team is attempting dragon, don't be afraid to tank it for your jungler but if you spot the enemy jungler coming in to make a steal attempt, you can use your ult on him when it is low to throw him away so he won't be in range.

Warding - As usual you should be warding but now that it is late game and the objectives have changed from tier 1 towers and dragon to basically just the Baron and pick opportunities. Locations of where I tend to try keep warded most of the time, spots are colour based on which team you are on. Pre-teamfight - Gragas doesn't have much in the way of poke so preteamfight he won't be doing much. What you should be focused on is being an object in the way that would discourage enemy attempts at engaging on one your squishies, also keep an eye out for a good ultimate engage, Gragas ult can be used to catch out people by launching them into your team just as well as it can be used for peeling.

For teamfights, 90% of the time you will be a peeler and tank for your team rather than someone that shuts down a member of the enemy team. Protecting whatever carry on your team needs it or will have most value from it is your priority. Gragas generally sits on his carrys and places himself between them and the enemy so that they quite literally have to go through him first to get to the carrys, he makes this extremely difficult with his wide array of CC and when things get desperate he can drop the barrel bomb and basically do a soft reset of the fight. - With 30% CDR this will be a low enough cooldown to be a fairly spammed spell, you will be using it to slow down people that flee but as fights go on you will be using it to try keep people off your carries. Due to the speed that kiting-chasing occurs at you should get time to charge up the barrels quite a bit before detonating them. - This spell is just something you will cast on cooldown whenever you can, it would be ideal if you also use its charge to autoattack something. The damage here will be quite noticeable for the enemy so that they can't just ignore you. - This will have 2 functions during teamfights, 1 which should ideally be the less common one is for mobility, whether it be to escape something, dodge or catch and enemy. The second and much more useful one as far as your team is concerned is the AoE knock up-stun, to begin with this should be aimed at the crowds to hit as many as possible but once you retreat to the peeling role this will be used for stunning people after your squishies and making sure you can keep up with them so that you are always in their face. - This being an ultimate will only get 1 use in a fight and when it it used it of huge importance since it can just as easily save someone on the enemy team as can save one of your own. 1. First way to use it is as an engage, the massive range of it allows you to potentially edge it in behind and enemy and launching them straight into your team, if it is a squishy it is almost certain death. 2. As a panic button, if your team is engaged on and caught by the balls where a potential wombocombo is about to get dropped on them this is a good panic button to halt the fight for a split second potentially giving your team the chance to pull itself together. 3. The final peel, if someone just refuses to get off your marksman and they are going to kill that poor squishy, you can just dump this on them and fire them 800 units away, not many can catch up again after this. - This has 2 uses in teamfights, 1 is the standard same as all your others, place it on someone that is trying to kill the target you are peeling for to make their life difficult. The other however is a potential teamfight winning play on its own and that is you getting the Exhaust on an enemy champion who is about to start a wombo combo(usually a mage or assassin) and crushing their damage reducing it by 50%. - The active shield on this is generally to be used on 1 of 3 targets. 1. is the guy you are peeling for, if he needs the shield to survive 2. is the guy on your team that is about to go ham, usually a bruiser who is going to dive on the enemies carries, they will appreciate the shield and even the damage from it quite a bit. 3. is yourself, if you get hard focused(which means you are doing your job!) you might need to use it on yourself just to delay death since you may not get an opportunity to use it on an ally if they are not taking any damage. - If you have this ideally the shield should be timed to protect as many of your team from an enemy wombocombo( as an example). - This is going to be used for the same reason as your Q, just to slow anyone that is trying to claw at an ally.

Thanks for checking out my Gragas support guide, I hope it helped convince you the power of the fat drunkard in the bottom lane! Check out my other guides!
