I've never really been an Olaf player but a few weeks ago i had an idea while seeing him in a game (which you rarely do). I wanted to test it for a long time and when i finally decided to just get olaf and play him i found out it worked really good. Most champions that go solo top have great sustain, champions like warwick, udyr, irelia, singed, mundo etc etc. Olaf does have built in sustain, like all of these champions. His W ability. You rarely see it being maxed early in other Olaf builds. They are also durable and have lots of health. Olaf with his W and passive will need a lot of health to be effective, especially seeing as you will almost always be building an Atmas impaler. He does also have a fair amount of health at level 1. Champions that go top often tend to deal lots of damage without damage items. Irelia has her true-damage, Warwick has his low cooldown Q and Udyr has his insane tigerstance dot with great scaling. Kayle and wukong have their armor reduction and jarvan has his annoying e+q combo. Olaf does have his E, the low cooldown ability that deals lots and lots of truedamage. It used to cost mana and health but since a while ago it only costs health. 136 health for 340 true damage at its last level. If you do max this ability first you will be doing 340 true damage every 4 seconds at lvl 9 (not including any cdr). This is insane damage. At low levels it will melt any champion. The drawback of course is that it costs health, but if you max your W second, you will have tons of lifesteal and with your hp-regen runes and for example a philo stone you will barely notice the damage being dealt to yourself. Another great thing about his W is that it does not draw aggro from the enemy minions, you can just keep spamming it without risking to push the lane. Another thing that campions that go top usually have is CC. This is this guides weakness as you will not be maxing out Q early and the fact that he does not have any form of lock, knockup or stun. However we will almost always be building a frozen mallet. The reason i play with ghost is also due to the lack of cc. CC is not always required though to dominate your lane, as long as you can keep your enemy low by spamming E you can effectively starve them from gold and perhaps even xp depending on the enemy champion. Escape-abilities is also commonly seen in the top lane seeing as it is by far the easiest lane to gank as it does only have one escape route. Jarvan has his E+Q combo. Udyr his stun+speedup. Talon his E. Jax his Q. Kennens E and the list goes on forever. Olaf does lack this until he hits level 6 but once you get your ultimate you will be very hard to gank seeing as it does not have a very long cooldown and you will of course have a ward in a nice spot at the river. You can always replace Ghost with Flash if they have a rammus or something that will be on your ass the entire game. Seeing as Olaf somewhat fulfills all of these criterias it just made sense to me for him to be going top. Also note how junglers like Warwick and Udyr all have/had overpowered sustain coming from the regular jungle builds. Champions that go solo right now often rune armor/dodge and magic resistance. This totally counters that.

You're going to have a hard time against anyone that is ranged and has cc or sustain. Here are some champions that I've found troublesome to face: Not the hardest to face, but his Q will keep giving him health and it has longer range than your E. He will be a pain in the ass that you will have a hard time to get out of your lane. As olaf you want to keep your enemy at low health always so that they will fear your E and keep themselves away. Her E and W and Q will make it hard for you to come out above her when trading damage. You can not get close to him. You will never get close to him. Your ultimate should keep you from dying from his ultimate though. Can't be touched, Can't be moved, Can't be stopped. Will rape anyone in lane. He will be a real asshole when he gets his manamune (and maybe a spirit visage). Can't get close to him. Will stun you everytime you try to e and then dash away or just hit you. Will silence you but isn't that annoying until later in the game. Olaf is perfect against teams that have few damage sources. You run in, kill and then their damage is gone. When facing teams with lots of damage you might have a hard time running in like that if your team can't back you up in time.

Armor Penetration marks for dealing damage. Pretty basic. Olaf is great at just running in through the entire enemy team and massacring whatever squishy you see. If you want to be able to deal the most damage as possible without building a Last Whisper early you will want to get these. Flat HP-regen seals for using your E. It is not required and may very well not be optimal against certain champions but if you do intend to be playing aggressively and out-harassing your enemy early they will serve you well. Building a philosopher stone or a wriggles early will definitely make up for the lack of these. Change these to armor or dodge depending on enemy or personal preference. Flat CDR glyphs i take to get the lowest possible cooldown of E early in the game. If i am not mistaken these outshine the CDR per level runes until you hit level 13. This is for an aggressive, early damage, build. Feel free to change them to Magic Resistance per level or flat depending on their team and who you are laning against. Movement-speed quintessences for being fast as fuck. Once again i do get these if i intend to be shitting on my enemy early in the game. You will most likely not be building a phantom dancer or trinity force on Olaf so the speed will do you good in a lot of cases. If you want to go with a more solid, safe or defensive build i would recommend flat health or health regeneration. More armor penetration might also work depending on your enemies. Flat health really works well with his W and your future Atmas impaler.

[title] Passive: Berzerker Rage[/title] [number]For each 1% of health missing, Olaf's attack speed is increased by 1%.[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This scales with his percentage of health thus making stacking health very good on olaf. You can be on 10% whilst still having a lot of health. Nothing more to say about this passive. It makes you 1v2 or 1v3 people. Combined with lifesteal this passive will make you survive "I'm fucked" situations. [title] Q: Undertow[/title] [number]Olaf throws an axe to a target location, dealing 50 / 90 / 130 / 170 / 210 physical damage plus 50% of his attack damage to units it passes through and slowing them by 16 / 22 / 28 / 34 / 40% for 2.5 seconds. If Olaf picks up the axe, the ability's cooldown is reduced by 6 seconds. Cost 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 / 75mana Range 1000[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Lots of guides usually tell you to get this. It doesn't scale very well and doesn't make you that much of a threat. It also costs lots of mana and you will not be building any mana early on, you simply can not afford the lack of survivability or damage. This ability is Olafs chasing ability. It doesn't do much against someone with mercury threads but with this and frozen mallet, people are going to have trouble running away from you. Use this when chasing people, when kiting people and when farming later in the game. [title] W: Vicious Strikes[/title] [number]For 6 seconds, Olaf's attack damage is increased by 7 / 14 / 21 / 28 / 35 base damage plus 1% of his max health. While active, Olaf gains 9 / 12 / 15 / 18 / 21% lifesteal and spell vamp. Cost 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60mana Range 700[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is what gives Olaf his sustainability. Press W, hit cannon minion, Get health. Paired with a wriggles or starks you will get lots and lots of health when this is maxed after E. It also gives you tons of damage when paired with health. Built in Atmas. Use this to regain health in lane, make you last longer in teamfights and boost your damage. You are not going to be using your Q a lot in lane so this is your only thing that uses mana. [title] E: Reckless Swing[/title] [number]Olaf deals 100 / 160 / 220 / 280 / 340 true damage to his target and inflicts 40 / 64 / 88 / 112 / 136 true damage to himself. Cost none Range 325[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This deals lots of damage. Press it on someone and they will lose a par of health at level one regardless of armor or magic resistance. It costs you no mana so you can spam it as long as you have health. I max this because 340 true damage on a 4 second cooldown is insane. Use this as often as possible if you can afford it. It hurts a lot. [title] R: Ragnarok[/title] [number]Active: For 5 / 6.5 / 8 seconds, Olaf is immune to disables and reduces incoming damage by 20 / 30 / 40. Passive: Olaf has 10 / 20 / 30 increased armor penetration. Cost 100 / 75 / 50mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is Olafs teamfighting and escape skill. Press it and you will survive longer and you will be immune to CC. Use it while going after their carries or whilst being chased or ganked.

Core: This is what makes you lethal. It gives you health which works great with your passive and W. It slows people allowing you to beat the shit out of them. This gives you lots and lots of damage while building defensive items. Perfect with your frozen mallet, a sunfire cape or a warmogs armor. Defensive items: You are Olaf, You do have a lot of health. This item is made for you. Great in team fights and effective against physical damage. These give you health. Health is good on Olaf. Sunfire cape also gives you some extra damage apart from the extra damage from W and atmas. Cheap MR and nowadays works with lifesteal. If you are going more for a fast-attacking, heavy hurting lifesteal build this is great for its price. These give you lifesteal. Lifesteal is good for sustain and also helps you when being focused in teamfights. Wriggles is more of a laning item whilst Starks is a teamfighting item. This gives you attack speed and magic resistance. It's cheap damage and especially good if you lack magical damage in your team. After reviving from that last devastating fight for baron that will probably decide who wins the game, you will not have a problem cleaning up as Olaf. Your passive makes you a killing machine. It also gives you magic resistance and armor which is always nice. This is not an item you buy to get better stats. Do not get it early. Great for your team. Makes AD carries think twice before attacking you. Will also help you win over lifesteal stacking enemys that you can't seem to get low. Quick, cheap magic resistance. You can upgrade it into a [imgsmall=items/force-of-nature.png][imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] The passive is sort of wasted on olaf since he does have his ultimate, However health is always good and it might be useful against champions like Annie, Veigar or Leblanc. Good for not getting caught by surprise. Damage items: CDR and armor-penetration. It will make you a force to be reckoned with but it does not make you survive very long. Rape squishys. Lacks survivability. Might as well play another champion if you want to deal that much damage. This is what you get if they stack armor against your team. It's cheap but it still takes up an item slot that could be used for more defensive items so be careful. Not really seen a lot on this champion but I can see it working well. AP and mana ar wasted stats though and it's horribly expensive. If you get this you will be raping very very hard with your passive, However it is very very expensive and spending that much gold on pure damage is not often a good idea. Shoes: Standard bruiser-shoes. Magic resistance and CC-reduction. You will mostly get these. If the enemy team is heavy on physical damage and low on CC, get these. If the enemy team is retarded and you are 10/0 without any thinkable threats, these will boost your damage. Troll-boots on Olaf. They might reduce your cd on E but that's all they are good for. Might work in some cases but do generally not get these boots.

Spam E as much as possible and use W to regain your health and battle. Using the bush to avoid harassment while not last-hitting is advised. This is a crappy video i quickly recorded to show you an example of what i mean.

You will slowly leave your lane, leading into team fights and pushing towers. Your job is to kill their carry. Press R, ghost at them and kill them. You do not have any cc to stop your own team from dying so just focus on your job and you will be fine.

By now your itembuild should be somewhat finished and you should be tanky. Your damage has somewhat worn out since most of your early damage came from E. Do not be mistaken though, 300 true damage is a lot at any time of the game. You are not a champion that is supposed to wait til the enemy blows all damage on someone else. You are either initiating by catching someone of guard or by following directly after your tank/other initiator. You will at this point of time not have any issues 1v1ing or maybe even 1v2ing anyone in their team.

Press R, Ghost and kill their carry. Use your randuin's omen, your elixir or ghostblade and kill their carries. You can not be stunned or interrupted so the only thing there is to stop your is their damage which is reduced by 40%. As Olaf you are not supposed to be a pussy. Chase them across the map if needed and never bail out of a fight.

This is my sort of unconventional guide to Olaf. I'm by no means a professional player, this is just how i play Olaf as of now and so far I have been doing fine against all the other top-tier solos like Udyr, Renekton etc. Maxing E might seem strange but you will notice how powerful it is when you try it. I am not sure if anyone have been doing this before but i have most certainly not seen it. Please share your success or failure after using this guide and share your thoughts. Constructive criticism is my favorite criticism. Please remember that this will of course not work against all team compositions. All champions and builds do have counters. I do not expect this guide to let you dominate say a yorrick in lane. Have fun :)
