So, you have made the fine choice of picking malzahar, WHAT DO? Let me open up by saying, that Malzahar is one of the most undervalued champions in LoL today, as he has a solid early, mid and late game presence. Should you be able to draw out of him his full potential, you will witness enemies dropping with ease, teams unable to push against you, and enemy bruisers melted down a matter of seconds. Before we shall get to his playstyle and mechanics, i will simply put out his Strengths and Weaknesses as i find them, during my endless Voyage in the Solo-Q seas. [highlight]PROs[/highlight]: * One of the best lane-pushing abilities in the game that works even without being present * Endless stun, that allows even the slowest of teammates to follow it up with a kill * Hard poke , Malzahar's Q is a bit tough to land for new players, but let me tell you, it chunks enemies. * His E + Auto Attack + Ignite is sometimes enough to take an enemy to 50% health * You have a minion! that dude blocks enemy skill-shots like no tomorrow! * Everytime Malzahar's E jumps to another minions/champion he gains mana back [highlight]CONs[/highlight]: * Lacks escaping tools, thus leaving him open to ganks if midlane not warded properly * Minion's A.I derps sometimes and needs a change (also makes farming under the tower sometimes annoying) * Needs to be able to connect several abilities exactly to make a kill (Q + W + R all need to hit) * His playstyle pretty much forces him to push the lane all the time after level 4

[imgext=] [highlight]Greater Quintessence of Ability Power x3[/highlight] [.] For extra damage when harassing and fightning [highlight]Greater Mark of Magic Penetration x9[/highlight] [.] Magic penetration works perfectly with Malefic Visions. [highlight]Greater Seal of Armor x9[/highlight] [.] help in taking less damage from minions when harrasing your opposition early game [highlight]Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist x9[/highlight] [.] I prefer having this as it gives you more Magic resist at level 18 The rune page i specified is quite ordinary. i would recommend using it most of the times as you will benefit from all of the attributes. However, in certain team strats, you will find yourself roaming more, in these cases, consider switching your flat ap quints into movement speed quints. And the last thing, if playing in an organized tournament, and lets say the enemy team has both AP mid, AP jungler or AP top, i would consider trading the Armor yellows into flat magic resist. [title]Update:[/title] As i find myself playing alot of solo queue, and naturally the game develope and evolves all the time, i found myself in need to get more rune pages, in order to have a vareity of choices besides the reguler Magic Pen - Armor - Magic resist, and by that i mean taking advantage of the champion composition my opponent's team are having, and managing to eek out more juice and power from my own champion by correctly applying diffrent rune pages to the specific game at hand. Example: Lets say my opponent team is (top-jugle-mid-adc-support): [imgsmall=champ/darius.png][imgsmall=champ/jarvaniv.png][imgsmall=champ/zed.png][imgsmall=champ/twitch.png][imgsmall=champ/sona.png] For a team like that, who's champions are significantly doing more AD damage than AP, i will use [imgext=] Why? well, i obviously need the armor yellow, but instead in investing into magic resist glyph's i'd rather scale my ability power with AP blues. i would even recommend taking it a step forward and combining half AP blues and half Armor blues. While if the enemy composition is: [imgsmall=champ/rumble.png][imgsmall=champ/zac.png][imgsmall=champ/twistedfate.png][imgsmall=champ/missfortune.png][imgsmall=champ/leona.png] i will use the following rune page: [imgext=] Thus allowing me to neglect some of the early armor as i will not be encoutering the enemy ADC early on in the game.

[title][img=skills/malzahar/p.png] Passive: Summon Voidling[/title] [number]After casting 4 spells, Malzahar summons an uncontrollable Voidling to engage enemy units for 21 seconds. Voidlings have 200 + 50 x lvl Health and 20 + 5 x lvl Damage. Voidlings Grow after 7 seconds (+50% Damage/Armor), and Frenzy after 14 seconds (+100% Attack Speed).[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This little dude helps you alot. he will push the lane, he will block enemy skill-shots (i.e morgana snare) and even help you tanking the blue buff if your jungler cant help you at that moment. He will derp sometimes, i know Riot are working on a fix to his somewhat lacking A.I, but overall he is a great thing to have because he added the one thing you are missing as Malzahar, and thats Attack Damage, you'll be suprised how he can turn close fight into your favor, adding DPS and standing right infront of your opponent to tank skill shots and even tower hits! [title][img=skills/malzahar/q.png] Q: Call of the Void[/title] [number]Malzahar opens two portals to the void. After a short delay, they fire projectiles which deal 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+80% of ability power) magic damage and silence champions for 1.4 / 1.8 / 2.2 / 2.6 / 3 seconds. Cost 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130mana Range 900 [highlight]Cooldown: 9 seconds[/highlight][/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Yes, this skill shot is quite hard to land at first, but once mastered, it chunks squishies by half and basically makes even the enemy tanks to think twice should they want to engage you starting from 80% health. Also its gives vision, thus preventing from Malzahar to facecheck bushes. I personally find it best used when your opponent goes for a last hit, a well placed Call of the Void can start a fight that will surly go in your favor, as not only it is used as the initial nuke but also silences the target, a vital ability against any Mage/Bruiser that you cross paths upon. try to land 1 or 2 of these, punishing your foe for trying to farm, when he is on 70-60% hp, i would gladly follow it up with Null Zone + Nether Grasp and Ignite (into Flash + Malefic Visions if needed) [title][img=skills/malzahar/w.png] W: Null Zone[/title] [number]Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy for 5 seconds. The zone damages nearby enemies for 4/5/6/7/8% (+0.01%) of their max health each second (damage to Monsters is capped). Cooldown 14 seconds Cost 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130 mana Range 800 [highlight]Cooldown: 14 seconds[/highlight][/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Oh wow, where do i even start? picture this: late game, you have Liandrys Torment, dropping the Null zone = 18% max hp PER SECOND from any of the enemy champions. ([number]8%[/number](Null zone base scale) + [number]5[/number]%(Null zone AP scale (Late game Malzahar have 500~ AP))+ [number]5%[/number] (Liandrys Torment passive) = [number]18%[/number]) most of the enemies wont even want to step on it even if you're not close to connect any more skills on them. if not part of your combo, use it to zone people out. 'nuff said. However, besides the \"cherry on the top\" (Null-zone prime use), there are other ways to make benefit of this ability. When farming, normally i drop my Malefic Visions on the first line of melee minions, alongside with couple of AA it will ensure full kills on them, but when it bounces into a Siege-Minion, Malefic Visions + Auto Attacks alone would not be sufficent. that where i use Null Zone underneath the siege-minion, it will take his hp down exactly to the point where the visions will consume him, and continue to bounce to the back caster minion line. [title][img=skills/malzahar/e.png] E: Malefic Visions[/title] [number]Malzahar infects his target's mind, dealing 80 / 140 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+80% of ability power) magic damage over 4 seconds. If the target dies during this time, the visions pass to a nearby enemy and Malzahar gains 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 mana. Cost 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120mana Range 600 [highlight]Cooldown: 15/13/11/9/7 seconds[/highlight][/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] My favorite skill! these wreched dreams consum enemies like there's no tomorrow, and jump to the next one for more!, you will find that alot of your enemies will not be able to judge correctly when the visions are done with 1 minions and will jump on them in most of the cases, making it a good way to start ending their lives =). Besides the normal farming, which i find very usfull (pushing my lane as fast as i can, because alot of other Mid champions are having a bad time farming under the tower) i like to use the visions as a start of any big team fight thats about the happen, especially when pushing or defending a tower. Why? because mid and late game your Malefic Visions are so strong they will eat minions alive almost without any help from Auto attacks or anything else, thus consuming them and bouncing to enemy champions, gaining free poke with every wave. I suggest you try and use this ability as much as you can pretty much all the time, the mana cost is not that high, and its very very effective to scare off opponents, causing them to switch to a diffrent position, resulting in loss of cs, delaying their push, or just gaining territory when pushing yourself. [title][img=skills/malzahar/r.png] R: Nether Grasp[/title] [number]Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress the target (stuns and disables summoner spells), dealing 250 / 400 / 550 (+130% of ability power) magic damage over 2.5 seconds. Cost 150 mana Range 575 [highlight]Cooldown: 120/100/80 seconds[/highlight][/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] I have a good friend, that simply puts it this way: [imgsmall=summoners/flash.png] + [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] = You're screwed. Seriously though, this ever-lasting stun allows even the slowest of team mates to grow some chest hair and join the fight. Combined correctly with the Null Zone, it pretty much melts every one.EVERYONE. One must remember, that when connected properly, this may be one of the biggest nukes in the game, and fitting such ability, it is very fragile and can be broken by simple displacment or a silence from the other team. You must be able to judge correctly the cooldowns and the abilities that the other team have, otherwise you will find yourself not being able to channel it for more than 1 seconds, resulting in the entire cooldown lost for pretty much the duration of the fight. In big team-fights, i strongly suggest that you'll wait for the enemy team frontline (i.e brusiers and gap-closers) to spend some of their major silencing/displacment abilities and only then locking on a target. Another important thing to remember about the Nether Grasp, that it can be cleansed, but only by having Quick Silver Sash (or gp, and srsly gp is a joke). The Cleanse summoner spell WILL NOT WORK. So either you made your opposition waste money on QSS, thus leaving them behind damage-wise, or you just gonna suppress them for 524 years. On a side not, even enemies that used the QSS, but still in range of the ult while its channeled, WILL recieve the damage, in order to fully cleanse the ult they must use QSS AND run away from your ult's range.

[img=skills/malzahar/r.png]->[img=skills/malzahar/e.png]->[img=skills/malzahar/q.png]->[img=skills/malzahar/w.png] Why? A. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] well... you werent asking why about this one werent you? B. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] Pushes lanes, annoys enemies, refunds mana. C. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] Longest ranged poke you have, turns into a NUKE mid/lategame. D. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] Get 1 point in level 4, but leave it to last, other abilities are simply more important early and mid-game, to be honest, later on Null Zone will hurt more than your Call of the Void, but the thing is that its scals also on enemy's health, thus reaching its full potential only during the late game.

This is a very important chapter, first of all i will say that as you experiment more with Malzahar, you will develope your own playstyle and will be able to adapt yourself to diffrent situation during a game. Reguler start: [img=items/dorans-ring.png] + [img=items/health-potion2.png] / [img=items/crystalline-flask.png][img=items/health-potion.png][img=items/sight-ward.png] However, when facing [img=champ/khazix.png] / [img=champ/zed.png] or basically any other AD casters which are now sneaking their way into mid-lane as part of the new meta, Consider taking [img=items/cloth-armor.png] + [img=items/health-potion4.png][img=items/mana-potion.png]. 1st trip back is usually simple, try to obtain as many small items as you can, or even complete a medium one. Normal: [img=items/boots-of-speed.png][img=items/ruby-crystal.png][img=items/sight-ward.png][img=items/health-potion.png] - 910 Gold Better: [img=items/catalyst-the-protector.png][img=items/sight-ward.png] - 1275 Gold GG: [img=items/needlessly-large-rod.png][img=items/sight-ward.png] - 1675 Gold And now, the real choices begin! [highlight](1st tier items - most recommended)[/highlight] [img=items/rod-of-ages.png] Health? Mana? epic Catalyst the Protector passive? Abilit power? YES PLEASE. This item gives Malzahar a smooth transition into ANY midgame situation and composition, you will be able to spam abilities to siege, have enough AP to nuke carries and soft targets, and great sustain vs most Bruiser's combos. [img=items/rabadons-deathcap.png] If you find yourself dominating the lane, i would suggest rushing Dcap. Due to the huge spike in power it gives you once equipped, it will ensure that you out-dps your opponent and let you further snowball the lane. [img=items/seekers-armguard.png] into [img=items/zhonyas-hourglass.png] It is not a rare thing to encounter an AD Bruiser in mid nowadays, grabbing an early Armguard synergizes very well with the \"Cloth and 5pots\" start, obviously, making you more resistant to pokes. Keep in mind the Zhonya's is one of the Core items for Malzahar, and will be very usfull later on in the game as it can be used to compensate on poor positioning in team fights. [img=items/negatron-cloak.png] into [img=items/abyssal-scepter.png] I would recommend grabbing the early Negatron Cloak ONLY when facing a strong AP carry with the combination of an AP jungler (i.e [imgsmall=champ/fiddlesticks.png]/[imgsmall=champ/maokai.png]), it will allow you to sustain their dps in lane, making sure you dont die to ganks, and later on it will scale most of your abilities casted inside of the Abyssal Sceptre's range. (small tip: once purchased, hover on the item with your mouse cursor to see its range, stunning an opponent with Nether Grasp while in Abyssal range will do a suprisingly high amount of damage to them). You should try and complete at least 3 of these items at some point before the late game, as they mix sufficent AP damage + Survivability. [highlight]Late game items to consider:[/highlight] [img=items/liandrys-torment.png] This item synergizes so well with not only Malzahar's abilities, but also with Rylais Crystal Scepter. the Slow applied from the Sceptre will cause an increase in damage (doubled) for the Liandry's thus maxing her output on every target that affected by the slow. More than that, the extra HP, AP and Magic Pen complete this item into a powerfull thing to have mid and late game. [img=items/void-staff.png] An amazing item to have, will turn your Call of the Void from a decent poke to a full scale Nuke. another BIG thing to note: once Void staff is picked up, Malzahar is now able to target both Carries and Tanks alike!, i'd find myself sometimes peeling for my AD carry in team fights only by focusing the enemy Bruiser that usually dives onto your AD carry by nuking him straight away. [img=items/giants-belt.png] into [img=items/rylais-crystal-scepter.png] When facing a tough matchup, or just feeling the need to be much more tanky (may i remind that the current meta is all about HP stacking), whilst a Giant belt looks an odd pickup on an AP carry, it will grant you the ability to sustain one's pokes, and granting enough time to trade in lane without worrying too much about your HP bar. [highlight]2nd Tier - Situational Items to consider[/highlight] [img=items/athenes-unholy-grail.png] Not a bad item on Malzahar, especially if you went 21-9-0 Masteries, it will help with the mana regen early on and negate a small portion of Magic damage done to you. also the Cooldown reduction is a great thing to have on Malzahar. [img=items/deathfire-grasp.png] While being another nice item on Malzahar, please take into consideration that you almost never want to get too close to use it, will also delay your essential combo timing which is the key thing when bursting someone down with Malzahar. [img=items/guardian-angel.png] Although it got nerfed in Season 3, if you find youself being dived by the enemy-team bruisers and unable to deal your full potential in teamfights, Guardian Angel is worth having. [img=items/seraphs-embrace.png] Malzahar takes AGES to stack that tear. yes the benefits you get from it once completed are great, but you will find youself sitting on the Tear of the Goddess for about 30 minutes with full spam on. [img=items/will-of-the-ancients.png] I guess it can work if your team has additional AP champions in the composition, but i would defently recommened picking one of the 1st tier items. [img=items/morellos-evil-tome.png] Actually , a very nice item to have. Easy build-path, and unlike the need to save big chunks of gold to get items such as Needlessly Large Rod, the small portions of money requiered to complete items like Feindish Codex turns this sexy idea of having \"along the way\" item while enjoying important benefits such as mana regen and cooldown reduction into something worth considering. [highlight]3 tier - Do not get these items[/highlight] [img=items/warmogs-armor.png] There is something that worries me in picking an item who does not contribute to the AP scaling in any way, but in certain team stratagies it can work. [img=items/lich-bane.png] You dont really use your Auto attacks that much, and dont excuse it by saying you're going to push towers. [img=items/nashors-tooth.png] Not worth the investment, expansive item that does not synergize that well with Malzahar's abilities. And you do not benefit from Attack-Speed. [img=items/twin-shadows.png] Its cheap, but i wouldnt even recommend using it for the early-mid game, your money needs to go somewhere else.

[center][img=items/sorcerers-shoes.png][img=items/dorans-ring.png][img=items/sapphire-crystal.png][img=items/ruby-crystal.png][img=items/sight-ward.png][/center] The early game is the time when we are quite weak, taking into consideration that we are somewhere around platinum-diamond, enemies know how to avoid getting the Visions on them, and are able to detect our Call of the Void animation and dodge it, thus, the kill potential for an early game Malzahar is not the highest among all the other AP casters. However, easily enough, Malz can push the lane rather fast, why should you do that? well, alot of enemy AP casters cant really farm well under the tower. put them to the test. Combined with a well timed Auto attack, Malefic Visions will ensure you do not miss a CS while gaining mana back, do your best pushing the wave and ask your jungler nicely to leave his Wraiths camp available to you. That way, not only you should be able to grab between 5 and a full wave of lane minions, but also extra 4 from time to time, you will reach level 6 faster, and you will have more money than your opponent. Reached level 6? When you feel confident enough, try to connect Call of the Void + Malefic Visions on the enemy, if he does not heal up, and stays about 60% health its a great time to chug couple of potions and get ready to unload your full combo (Call of the Void followed by Null Zone and Nether Grasp, most of the time it will grab you the kill, if not, consider dropping your Ignite (while channeling Nether Grasp) and Malefic Visions - just about before the ult's channel runs out. Oh, and dont forget the Auto-attacks, You and your Minion deal a nice amout of AD damage together!. Enemy mid laner doesnt fall for the trap? thats fine, remember that Malzahar has a very strong wave-clear. use it, and go roam. after level 6 you just can drop your Malefic Visions + Null Zone on the midlane wave, and just leave it. make sure you have all your major cooldowns up, try to sneak your way into bot lane. why bot lane? well there's practically no way their ADC or Support will be tanky enough to sustain a full (or even half) of your combo. (good communication with your support player will let you know where they warded), get some kills for your ADC.

[center][img=items/rod-of-ages.png][img=items/rabadons-deathcap.png][img=items/zhonyas-hourglass.png][/center] AWWW YEAH. we survived our weak part. its time to terror the playground. First of all, obvious things: your lane opponent should not be able to roam, push the lane quickly, and then choose between to major playstyles: [.] Aggressive: push mid, roam top or bot, do your best to secure a kill for your team, remember that your Nether Grasp will allow even the slowest of teammates to \"wake up\" and respond to your gank with a kill, MAKE SURE to grab an objective after a roam, why? cause enemy midlaner will either roam after you, or will try to punish you by pressuring mid tower. so grabbing the Dragon or bot/top tower is a good answer, especially if you grabbed a kill. it will leave your team ahead. [.] Passive: Push mid, rush Wraith, Push mid, Rush wolves, Push get the picture, Stay in mid, ward around and try to outplay your opponent, its safe enough to say, that if you warded properly, and your enemy is ~60% health. you can feel free to go to town on the dude. -- Zoning in teamfights! As we all know, teams start to contest global objectives round about the mid-game. Malzahar combines a high-end-singel-target-mind-blowing-dps, and yet, his kit allows him to zone stray junglers and champions who are not positned well on the battlefield. Null Zone will force enemies to think twice if they wanna go a particuler way, sometimes enough to secure dragon. Call of the Void - you dont have to facecheck nothing anymore. also very usfull to block enemies from advancing onto your position. This is round about the time, in which you get a good grasp of what you're going to dish out in the money-time. i know some big teamfigts can occure also during this part of the game, however, we'll get into that more specifically in the Late game Chapter. I personally believe that farming, minions, rather than champions will help scale you better into the late game, yeah, when an oppertunity presents itself you should go for the kill, thats what you are, but remember that everything good comes from a solid Start/Mid game.

[center][img=items/void-staff.png][img=items/rylais-crystal-scepter.png][img=items/liandrys-torment.png][/center] Late game Malzahar is a mean DPS machine, taking into consideration that you by now have items such as [imgsmall=items/void-staff.png] and Liandry's Torment, You are free to target Carries and Tanks alike! Make sure you grab the blue buff before any big engagment, and poke enemies before it starts. Malzahar is a great Lane-pusher (although not a terrific Tower-pusher), coming into lane, dropping 1 or 2 of your abilities will make sure it will push into your favor, allowing you to focus on the minimap and on team-objectives. Even when encoutering straying enemies in their jungle or around the mid, Malzahar should not be afraid, by the 30th minute mark you will be able to pick a 1v1 fight against almost any Champion in the game, when it does happen, simply drop your combo which consists of Call of the Void -> Null Zone -> Nether Grasp -> Ignite and if thats not enough, drop your Malefic Visions just before the Channeling is done, and walk away [highlight]without[/highlight] looking back, like all the cool guys do=) -- Positioning in teamfights! This is the most important aspect of your game. what do to in teamfights. lets start from the basics, ask yourself a couple of questions before, to evaluate your DPS and deciding your position in the team fight, as i will explain after. [.] Did i have a good laning phase (a.k.a have i reached a spike in damage such as Rabadon's Deathcap?) [.] Does my ADC has someone to peel for him? [.] Is my team composition is All-In / Poke / Protect the ADC [.] Can i sustain the burst of their bruisers / carries? Why should we ask ourselves those questions? well, Malzahar is VERY versital and can fill a diffrent roll in every team fight and in every team composition. Your Kit allows you to burst EVERYTHING, from ADC/AP carries to heavy Tanks. so grabbing a quick moment, to think on who you wish to eliminate from the teamfight is VERY important. Yeah, i know, we all want to kill the ADC, but, as a Malzahar, you wont always have enough sustain / range to do so, BUT, if you do peel for your adc, he can continue into cleaning up the fight. LoL is a team game, make sure its that YOUR team who wins. An easy Way to explain this, is to picture a Basketball game. both teams are composed from a 5-player setup, usually, your front line will be the Top laner and Jungler (who goes in deep to get the enemy ADC) and a back line that is usually composed by your ADC and Support. I like to picture Malzahar as a 50%-50% player, who can join each line to make it way more efficent, and also be in the middle of the team, with fast-reactions and decision making, choosing the right angel to approch the teamfight. Lets picture a 2-1-2 scenario: [imgsmall=champ/amumu.png][imgsmall=champ/darius.png] - [imgsmall=champ/malzahar.png] - [imgsmall=champ/caitlyn.png][imgsmall=champ/nami.png] You may call this \"Reguler setup\" , in this way, its quite clear whats going to happen, Darius and amumu are gonna storm the front, Nami is gonna peel for Cait, and you are faced with a big decision to make, do i help my ADC , or do i join the front line, thats EXACTLY why we asked ourselves the questions right above this paragraph. This is the optimal place for a malzahar, you're not the focus of the fight, allowing you to dish out full combo's, nuking enemies and captalizing on bad positioned of opponents. Your choices in this specific scenario are: A. Amumu/Darius got the jump on an enemy carry? NUKE IT B. Nami failed to peel for cait? Null Zone + Nether Grasp that guy to help Cait out of this sticky situation. (while pinging her to complete the kill) C. Are they focusing you? Flash or triggering your Hourglass can buy you alot of time, and compensate on bad positioning. on the other hand, there will be times, when your ADC will have no peel, lets picture a team comp that goes something like this: [imgsmall=champ/jarvaniv.png][imgsmall=champ/rumble.png][imgsmall=champ/leona.png] - [imgsmall=champ/malzahar.png] - [imgsmall=champ/missfortune.png] As we can see, Leona is a champion who goes forth, CC-ing opponents and making plays, thus sometimes neglecting her ADC infavor of capitalizing on enemy's mistakes. In this composition, our front line is already beefy and scary, full of CC and enough damage to burst whomever they are targeting, but our ADC is left open, and as an ADC, you dont want to find yourself in the middle of the team fight, rather in somewhat of a back-position raining damage, Malzahar can help MF by peeling for her, i would wait a while, before using my Nether Grasp, wait for some big (displacment) cooldowns to be blown, especially the ones who can break your channeling and only then peel hard for your ADC, stun the enemy bruiser / nuke enemy jungler, throw EVERYTHING to make sure your ADC survive, even in the cost of your own life. Why? naturally, ADC are better \"objective captures\" than AP casters even a lone ADC can continue after a teamfight to grab towers / dragons, while you cant.

Yes, i have already touched quite a bit on the Team Fights strats, both in the Mid game and in the Late game. However, in this area i will explain EXACTLY what to do, what are the benefits of each ability, and what is the proper way to unlesh them, taking into consideration their Cooldowns, DPS, Zoning mechanics etc. The Team-fights chapter leads us mainly in 2 directions [highlight]1st: Open field combat[/highlight] (i.e baiting Baron) Malzahar excelles in Singel-Target dps, thus picking a target once a fights starts is requiered. if your support fails to peel for your ADC, you will find youself able to melt down even the biggest of tanks combining your Null Zone + Nether Grasp with the help of the ADC on them. However, if the team is functining properly, i like to do the following: 1. Spot where there are the largest number of enemy champions and drop your Call of the Void on them 2. From there, pick the lowest-hp champions and target him with Malefic Visions, you can even continue this with Ignite to ensure the kill. 3. By that time, someone from the enemy team should have closed to gap to you, drop your Null Zone + Nether Grasp to chunk him down, if your team does not follow it up with a kill, use the Zhonya's Hourglass and be ready to drop your Malefic Visions and Flash away. 4. Malzahar is not the best Champion in the game to mop team fights and chase low-life enemies, but if the oppertunity presents itself, Malefic Visions and some Auto-Attacks should do the work. 5. Always remember, if an enemy has closed the gap onto your position, using Call of the Void on your location will prevent him from using his abilities on you, even if for a short while, you will find it sufficent enough to make your team realize you're the AP carry, not the tank. [highlight]2nd: Crowded-area Teamfights / 5v5 Tower pushing:[/highlight] (i.e: Initiating happens in the jungle / Whole team trying to take a Tower) In these cases, i would simply favor dropping as much AoE abilities as i can before actually picking a target and focusing her down. Be sure to stay protected and note your position at all time of the enemy team will swiftly open up on you. In these particuler fights i would start by 1. Dropping Call of the Void and Null Zone on the nearest group of enemies, mid and late game you will find the Call of the Void to be a nice nuke. 2. If Call of the Void hits, it will also Silence the targets, allowing your initiators to take place and start the real fight. 3. I usually tend to follow this up with Malefic Visions on the nearest target and keeping to myself just a bit longer so all my cooldowns are back up 4. Once this happened, pick a target and destroy it by using the Call of the void, Null Zone and Nether Grasp. 5. try to catching fleeing enemies with Flash, Malefic Visions and Ignite. Another thing to remember: Dropping your Malefic Visions on mininons, at the mid or late stages of the game, will finish them alone with no need of the extra auto-attack, enemies that will be close to it will recieve the vision as a nice present before starting the fight. (i.e: Pushing down a tower, waiting for your minion wave to come, drop Malefic Visions on their minions and watch it bouncing to an enenmy who was only trying to clear your wave). In this section i will try and let you get some tips about your possible lane opposition and how the match up is going to work. [img=champ/ahri.png] - 7/10 Medium-Hard She does not farm so well under the tower, push her hard. Stand behind minions to avoid being [imgsmall=skills/ahri/e.png] Stand in the side just so she wont hit both you and the minions with her [imgsmall=skills/ahri/q.png] [img=champ/akali.png] - 4/10 Medium-Easy An amazing gap-closer, maintain High-hp at all times and remember, nobody can dive you under the tower if you have your ult up. Early on try to time the cooldown on her [imgsmall=skills/akali/q.png] to acoid free damage Make sure to plant a [imgsmall=items/vision-ward.png] smack down the lane to negate her [imgsmall=skills/akali/w.png] when both of you are having kill potential (after level 6 usually) [img=champ/anivia.png] - 5/10 Medium-Boring You will not be able to kill a good anivia, her [imgsmall=skills/anivia/q.png] out range your kit and after level 6 she pushes the lane with [imgsmall=skills/anivia/r.png] faster than you with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png]. however there is no real way for her to kill you, get [imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png] early to dodge her skillshots. [img=champ/annie.png] - 8/10 Medium-Hard This match pretty much evolves around who can get first to the punch. push your lane hard, she can bearly farm under the tower. becarfull of the [imgsmall=summoners/flash.png]+[imgsmall=skills/annie/r.png] when her [imgsmall=skills/annie/p.png] is up. [img=champ/brand.png] - 3/10 Easy Dodge the [imgsmall=skills/brand/q.png], and punish him every time you do with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] [img=champ/cassiopeia.png] - 5/10 - Medium Yes her [imgsmall=skills/cassiopeia/q.png] has a decent range, but you burst her down WAY faster than what she can do to you. Also make sure to be on youe toes when reaching level 6, you dont wanna get caught facing her before dropping your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png], otherwise she will [imgsmall=skills/cassiopeia/r.png]+[imgsmall=skills/cassiopeia/q.png]+[imgsmall=skills/cassiopeia/e.png] and you're pretty much done. [img=champ/chogath.png] - 4/10 Medium-Easy Neither of you really has a kill potential 1v1, the only way to take him down is hitting ALL of your abilites to the max + [imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png]. Note, that a chogath wont usually try to harass you too much with his [imgsmall=skills/chogath/q.png], but when he does make signs of it, its usually means a gank is coming. [img=champ/diana.png] - 9/10 Very Hard Early on, her [imgsmall=skills/diana/q.png] does hurt, but it wont chase you out of lane. the real danger is when she lands one after level 6. fall back EVERY time she lands a [imgsmall=skills/diana/q.png] on you unless you're 100% sure you can out dps her in a straight 1v1. her combo is deadly and you cannot sustain the full length of it most of the times. maintain high HP at all times in lane. [img=champ/evelynn.png] - 2/10 Easy It is easy 1v1 vs her, but she will figure it out and soon enough you will find yourself fighting against her jungler and she will roam. [img=champ/fizz.png] - 6/10 Medium-Hard Levels 1-3 - its your house. you call the shots. you abusing the melee-last-hitting fizz. Levels 4-6 - if lane is still equal, take not and care he will try to poke you and \"set you up\" to when he is 6 / getting a gank. maintain high hp. when fighting 1v1 you can out play him, drop your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] and bait his [imgsmall=skills/fizz/e.png] and only then unleash full combo. usully works. [img=champ/gangplank.png] - LOL/10 You wont be facing this guy in mid, but seriously, he just eats oranges and everything is k. [img=champ/gragas.png] - 4/10 - Medium-Easy It takes him alot more time to connect his stuff to burst you down than what it takes for you. however becarfull of his displacment with his [imgsmall=skills/gragas/r.png], combined with a jungle gank and you're dead. [img=champ/jayce.png] - 7/10 Hard The mobility on this guy is insane, jumps in and out and can finish you from afar, stay behind minions, let him farm under the tower, drop your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] on him if he tries to last hit with the hammer form. [img=champ/karthus.png] - 3/10 Easy You outplay this guy easily, but he does farm well under the tower, with his [imgsmall=skills/karthus/e.png] try zoning him out, dodging his [imgsmall=skills/karthus/q.png] combined with proper ward placment. once reaching level 6 always keep an eye on him. you can cancel his [imgsmall=skills/karthus/r.png] with both your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] and [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png], saving a teammate=). [img=champ/kassadin.png] - 8/10 Hard After level 6, bait his aggresion with rift walk, [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png]+[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png]+[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png]+[imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png] on the rift walk position will secure a kill ( W + R + ignite is enough if you got silenced) [img=champ/katarina.png] - 1/10 EZPZ You are her biggest counter, you are her nightmare, if she wants to do anything in the lane, she needs [imgsmall=items/quicksilver-sash.png] and fast, thus neglecting her damage output. [img=champ/khazix.png] - 7/10 Medium-Hard Do not engage this guy pre-6 , he has alot more burst than you, but after 6, bait and dodge his [imgsmall=skills/khazix/e.png] and go all in. [imgsmall=items/vision-ward.png] in lane does help. [img=champ/leblanc.png] - 8/10 Hard Well, its leblanc, early game was hers, now the late game is yours. Consider getting an early [imgsmall=items/abyssal-scepter.png]. [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] COMPLETLY negates her kit. [img=champ/lux.png] - 7/10 Medium-Hard All of her kit outranges yours, you are the one who actually needs to close the gap in order to kill and a good lux wont let you. let her farm under her tower as much as you can time and dodge her [imgsmall=skills/lux/e.png] to avoid free damage in lane time and dodge her [imgsmall=skills/lux/q.png]+[imgsmall=skills/lux/e.png] to avoid being killed by [imgsmall=skills/lux/r.png] [img=champ/masteryi.png] - AWWW YEAH/10 forget about this guy. [img=champ/mordekaiser.png] - 5/10 Medium You will trade all day, but it comes down to when you can catch him close enough to drop your abilities on him [img=champ/morgana.png] - 5/10 You out-burst her even with her [imgsmall=skills/morgana/e.png] on, just make sure to pop it before dropping your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] otherwise she wont be stunned. dodge her [imgsmall=skills/morgana/q.png] and push her to the tower every possible time. [img=champ/nidalee.png] - 3/10 Easy If an AP nidalee wants to keep up with you in the farm, she needs to transfer into cougher form. you just wait. smile. have a cup of tea, and when she does. go ALL IN and beat the liviing hell out of her. she can do nothing to you with her [imgsmall=skills/nidalee/r.png] on unless she already poked you hard with several [imgsmall=skills/nidalee/q.png] [img=champ/orianna.png] - 7/10 Medium-hard Time her [imgsmall=skills/orianna/q.png], and trade your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] on her whenever you can. take extra care because her Auto Attacks does significant damage to you. [img=champ/ryze.png] - 5/10 Medium He is able to trade back, thus make sure you hit him with your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] before getting too close. early on he will poke with [imgsmall=skills/ryze/q.png], it shouldnt drive you out of the lane or something. ryze is unlikely to go all in 1v1 against you, so beware, when he turns aggressive, that usually means his jungler is nearby. [img=champ/swain.png] - 6/10 Medium Another classic case of a pure skill matchup. you both have amazing Damage Over Time abilities. dont get caught in his [imgsmall=skills/swain/w.png] or he will go all in. [img=champ/talon.png] - 8/10 Hard He closes the gap, he silnces and he hurts. push the lane and punish him with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] for trying to last him, but not too much, he will go for it every chance you give him. [img=champ/twistedfate.png] - 2/10 Easy You win the lane, but TF is not about winning his lane isnt he? ward the aggresivly to spot when he [imgsmall=skills/twistedfate/r.png] and ask your jungler to do the same. [img=champ/veigar.png] - 7/10 Medium-Hard You are both greedy and nobody wants to buy a [imgsmall=items/quicksilver-sash.png] Basically, if he used his [imgsmall=skills/veigar/e.png], you can do whatever you want to him. [img=champ/viktor.png] - 9/10 Very Hard This guy counters you hard, he will trade with you all day spamming his [imgsmall=skills/viktor/q.png], and eventually his [imgsmall=skills/viktor/r.png] if casted 1 milisecond before yours, will cancel the [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] and he will continue to kill you. [img=champ/vladimir.png] - 3/10 Easy Your greatest ability in this matchup is the [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png], as it keeps hitting him even in [imgsmall=skills/vladimir/w.png]. [img=champ/ziggs.png] - 6/10 Medium Skill matchup, his stuff are a bit harder to land, you should be able to dominate the lane. maintain high-hp at all times or he will finish you off with his [imgsmall=skills/ziggs/r.png] [img=champ/zilean.png] - 1/10 Very Easy Ok, so he double [imgsmall=skills/zilean/q.png] you. now he's dead. [img=champ/zed.png] - 6/10 Medium Try not to take so much damage early on from his [imgsmall=skills/zed/q.png] once he's level 6 and will aggresivly poke you untill you're ~60% hp, then, he will go all in. Maintain high hp at all times in lane. if dragged into a 1v1, [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] IMMEDIETLY after he [imgsmall=skills/zed/r.png] you, EVEN WITHOUT dropping your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] or any other ability first, use your ult defensivly only to wait out the Death mark time, thus negating his damage amplification.

Like i said in the beggining, Malzahar is an amazing champion to play, with so many abilities and mechanics to exploit, which put to the test not only your opponent, but you as well. Playing Malzahar to its maximum potential makes laning phase, mid game, teamfights and team objectives look easy. The way I see it, alot of players has no clue about the true potential stored in Malzahar, thus sometimes causing your lane opposition or enemy tanks to disregard snowballing abilities such as the Null Zone, that at a given time can do over 15% max hp damage per second, causing them a huge suprise, and a possible game changeing moves by your side. I hope i managed to do a decent job introducing you to this great champion and encourage you to play him more often. [youtube][/youtube]
