This is a guide on how to play [imgsmall=champ/xinzhao.png]. Xin Zhao is a champion with a great early and mid game and this guide will show you a build that capitalizes on this early advantage. Late game, however, his effectiveness is limited due to lack of scaling. Additionally, this guide will go into great detail on a number of items and how cost effective they are, so even if you dont play xin zhao, you will probably still find useful information.

For a college math class last semester, I was required to do a project on optimization. Since I really like lol, I decided to use it as a basis for my project. I later decided I might as well use this information to help the lol community, and perhaps RIOT balance items. Since I play a lot of Xin zhao this guide will be centered around him. I will be glad to add cost analysis of other items, since I have already done all the calculations. Just ask in the comment section.

[imgext=http://i55.tinypic.com/207x98p.png] Marks : 9xArmor Pen = 15 armor pen. Seals : 9xFlat Armor = 13 armor. Glyphs: 9xFLAT Magic Resist = 13.5 mr . Quints: 3xArmor Pen = 10 armor pen. Total : 25 armor pen, 13 armor, 13.5 mr. Marks Clear choice here. Only possible alternative is attack speed, which Xin can already gets from [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/w.png]. Seals FLAT armor seals are the best option here the armor will help greatly in lane harras and early teamfights. Another alternative is mana regen per 5, but Xin is not a mana hungry champ. Just dont spam abilities. Glyphs There is a LOT OF CONFUSION as to whether FLAT mr or mr per level is better. Lets analyze: Flat mr = 1.49x9 = 12.61 mr from level 1 Scaling mr(0.15 per level) = 1.35 at level 1 = 12.15 at level 9 = 24.3 at level 18 In comparison, the extra 11mr is rarely going to be a deciding factor during endgame, when everyone has magic penetration, and you have lots of health. However, the Flat mr will help greatly in laning phase vs burst mages ( surviving a level 6 [imgsmall=champ/annie.png]), mages with spammable skill ([imgsmall=champ/kennen.png]shuriken harrass) and the early teamfights. So Flat mr is the better choice. Quints Armor Penetration is best here. Why? Because your autoattacks will be hitting for true damage early game. Additionally armor penetration is hard to itemize in comparison to say attack speed or damage. Xin is a melee so the only other option you should consider is switching 1 or 2 of the quints for movement speed (especially if your opponent has a [imgsmall=champ/sona.png] or[imgsmall=champ/janna.png]due to their team movement speed bonuses). However Xin has the longest melee range, so always go with armor pen except in the cases mentioned above. Stay away from all other quints.

[title] Passive: Tireless Warrior[/title] [number]Xin Zhao is healed for 30 points for every 3 attacks that he lands. This amount increases by 5 every 2 levels.[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This helps you sustain yourself in lane. Additionally this works on turrets. [title] Q: Three Talon Strike[/title] [number]Xin Zhao prepares to unleash a fearsome combo, causing his next 3 standard attacks to deal his attack damage + 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 / 75 to enemy targets, with the final attack knocking his opponent into the air. Cost 30mana Range 375[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] A very useful CC. Here are some tips: [.]It refreshes you auto attacks timer so after [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png]auto attack once then use it to increase your burst. [.]If you opponent keeps kiting you during laning phase, try hitting a minion twice with this activated, to charge up the knock up. [.]Has a low mana cost, so can be used to help last hit or push lanes faster. [title] W: Battle Cry[/title] [number]Passive: Increases Xin Zhao's attack speed by 20/25/30/35/40%. Active: Xin Zhao unleashes a battle cry, increasing his attack speed by double the passive amount for 5 seconds, and causing his standard attacks to reduce all other ability cooldowns by 1 second. Cooldown 24/22/20/18/16 seconds Cost 35 mana [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] A great attack speed steroid. Tips: [.]Use it right after [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png] and [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png]to speed up their cooldowns during a fight. [.]Use it out of battle to speed up the cooldown of your [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/r.png]. [title] E: Audacious Charge[/title] [number]Audacious Charge Xin Zhao charges an enemy unit, dealing 70 / 110 / 150 / 190 / 230 (+40% of ability power) damage to all nearby enemies and slowing them by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 1.7 seconds. Cost 70 mana Range 650 Cooldown 16/15/14/13/12[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] A great gap closer that should be used right after the tank initiates. Tips: [.]It does more damage than[imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png]and is instant, so should be maxed first. [.]Is an AOE and slow, so can be used on a minion next to an enemy if the champion is just out of range. Try to use it on the squishy or as many people when initiating a fight. [.]Has a relatively high cost of mana, so do not spam. Make the most of it when you use it. [.]In some situations, it is best to save this. Example: if you are doing a gank and the enemy uses[imgsmall=summoners/flash.png] you can catch them with this ability. [.]Sometimes it is better to walk up to a champion and save this to chase, rather than using it right at the start of a fight. [title] R: Crescent Sweep[/title] [number]Xin Zhao unleashes a fierce spear sweep on targets around him, dealing 125 / 225 / 325 + 20% of their current health in physical damage. His magic resistance and armor are increased by 25 (+7/10/13 Armor and Magic Resist for each champion hit) for the next 6 seconds. Cooldown 75 seconds Cost 100 mana Range 350 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] A great AOE spell that does % health damage. Tips: [.]Use it in a team fight first becuase the % health damage works of CURRENT health. [.]Try to hit as many people as possible. This will give you a nice armor and magic resist buff.

Level this last so you max it when you are finishing of your damage items.

In this part I intend to introduce you to the various stats that can be itemized. I will then categorize them into stats that are relevant to Xin Zhao. Finally we will analyze (where possible) the cost of obtaining that particular stat in game. I considered leaving this section out, but though it best to leave it here incase anybody wanted to check my methodology. If you want to skip all the boring math, jump to the end of this chapter for a quick summary. List of Stats [1.]Health [2.]Armor [3.]Magic Resist [4.]Attack Damage [5.]Attack Speed [6.]Armor Pen [7.]Critical Strike Chance [8.]Life Steal [9.]Cooldown Reduction [10.]Dodge [11.]Tenacity [12.]Movement Speed [13.]Health Regen per 5 seconds [14.]Critical Damage [15.]Spell Vamp [16.]Magic pen [17.]Abilty Power [18.]Mana [19.]Mana Regen per 5 seconds Methodology: Take all the basic tier items for that stat, add their gold cost all together, then divide by their total cost. This will give you the best approximation for obtaining the average cost of 1 unit of that stat. [title]Analysis of Stats[/title] 1. HEALTH Basic items: [imgsmall=items/giants-belt.png] and [imgsmall=items/ruby-crystal.png] Cost of 1 Health = (1110+475) / (430+180) = 2.6 gold 2. ATTACK SPEED Basic items: [imgsmall=items/recurve-bow.png] and [imgsmall=items/dagger.png] Cost of 1% Attack Speed = (1050+420) / (40+15) = 26.7 gold 6. ARMOR PENETRATION Relevant to Xin, but hard to estimate a gold cost as it has no basic item components. 7. CRITICAL STRIKE CHANCE Basic Items: [imgsmall=items/cloak-of-agility.png] and [imgsmall=items/brawlers-gloves.png] Cost of 1% Crit Chance = (830+400) / (18+8) = 47.3 gold 8. LIFESTEAL Basic Items: [imgsmall=items/vampiric-scepter.png] Cost of 1% Lifesteal = (450) / (12) = 37.5 gold 9. COOLDOWN REDUCTION Relevant to Xin, but hard to estimate a gold cost as it has no basic item components. 10. DODGE Relevant to Xin, but hard to estimate a gold cost as it has no basic item components. 11. TENACITY Relevant to Xin, but hard to estimate a gold cost as it has no basic item components. 12. MOVEMENT SPEED Relevant to Xin, but hard to place a gold cost on it since it has no basic item components. 13. CRITICAL DAMAGE Relevant to Xin, but hard to estimate a gold cost as it has no basic item components. 14. HEALTH REGEN PER 5 Irrelevant to xin. Health Regen will rarely help you in team fights which are usually over in less than 10 seconds. As such I deemed this stat useless. 15. SPELL VAMP Irrelevant to Xin Zhao. 16. MAGIC PEN Irrelevant to Xin Zhao. 17. ABILITY POWER Irrelevant to Xin Zhao. 18. MANA Irrelevant to Xin Zhao. 19. MANA REGEN PER 5 Irrelevant to Xin Zhao. [title]SUMMARY[/title] Cost of 1 Health = 2.6 gold Cost of 1 Armor = 15.9 gold Cost of 1 Magic Resist = 15.8 gold Cost of 1 Attack Damage = 38.0 gold Cost of 1% Attack Speed = 26.7 gold Cost of 1% Crit Chance = 47.3 gold Cost of 1% Lifesteal = 37.5 gold

In this part I intend to go into depth on a rather large list of items and analyze how cost effective the item may be. Even if you dont play xin, this part of the guide should help you with items for other/similar champions. When deciding how good an item is, there are FOUR CONSTRAINTS: [title]1. How cost effective is that item:[/title] - This mean how much gold you will save/spend. Calculated by: TOTAL COST - TOTAL VALUE OF STATS Example 1: an [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png]cost a total of 3830 gold, and it offers 80 AD (worth 80x38), 25% crit chance (worth 25x47.3) Therefore we can calculate how cost effective it is... (3830) - (3040 + 1182.5 ) = -392.5 gold cost, so you are actually PAYING -392.5 gold for the item (you gain 392.5 gold). Example 2: [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] cost a total of 2355 gold, and it offers 45 Armor (worth 45x15.9), 18% crit chance (worth 18x47.3) Therefore we can calculate how cost effective it is... (2355) - (715.5 + 851.4) = 790 gold cost, so you are PAYING 790 gold for this item (you pay 790 gold). Example 3: [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] cost a total of 2715 gold , and it offers 375 health (worth 375x2.6) and 50 mr (worth 50x15.8) We ignore the mana because it as explained above, it is a stat we dont care about on xin. Therefore we can calculate how cost effective it is... 2715 -(975+790) = 950 gold, so you are actually paying 950 gold for the item (you pay 950 gold) The lower the better and negative values mean it is even more cost efficient. I will refer to this stat as 'YOU PAY' ... for simplicity. [title]2. How much gold the item is worth:[/title] - Also considered the 'space constraint' This means how much gold are you investing in that slot. Calculated: TOTAL VALUE OF STATS Example 1: an [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png]has 80ad worth (80x38) and 25% crit chance worth (25x47.3). Total is 4200 gold worth of stats in 1 slot, so it is very efficient. Example 2: [imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] gives you 1566 worth of gold in its slot. So far less efficient than an infinity edge. Higher number is better. Higher number means you are concentrating more gold in that one slot which is good for space efficiency. I will refer to this stat as 'IT OCCUPIES'... for simplicity. [title]3. Additional effects: [/title] Such as on-hit effects, auras, unique passives and actives. These will be noted, so that you may better decide if the gold is worth it. Example 1:[imgsmall=items/frozen-mallet.png]provides a 40% slow on hit. Example 2:[imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png] 2% of health if converted to bonus AD [title]4. Item Components:[/title] Some items are better in that they build from cheap components. They therefore lower the amount of time that you have gold 'floating'. Im sure we have all been in the position when we bluepill and cant decide whether to wait 20 more seconds for an item or just do without it. Thats what this constraint is about. Example 1: [imgsmall=items/hexdrinker.png] builds from [imgsmall=items/long-sword.png]x2 therefore you can start building it as soon as you have the 415 gold. However, [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png] has [imgsmall=items/bf-sword.png] as one of its components, so if you have to bluepill and only have 1500 gold, you will have to spend that gold on other components, or have it 'floating' when you return to lane. I end by giving my opinion on the item, and its usefulness/synergy relative to xin zhao, followed by my rating of the item. N.B. Alot of people have given me flak for rating their favorite items poorly etc. I would like to therefore stress the point that it is my opinion and rating and just that, my opinion and rating. What you cannot argue over is the mathematics behind it. For example paying 1k gold for some regen, in my opinion is a waste. You may think the health regen is useful, but the fact remains that you are paying 1k gold for it and that fact is indisputable. I try to be objective as possible when rating the items and keep in mind that the ratings are based on the items synergy with XIN ZHAO, not the item in general. [title]My Rating Guide:[/title] 'S' Class: God Tier. An item with this rating is EXTREMELY gold efficient, offers stats that xin uses, occupies a decent gold amount in its slot, and has an additional passive that benefits xin. 'A' Class: Legendary Tier. Gold efficient, offers stats that xin uses occupies a decent gold amount in its slot. Passive is helpful to xin. 'B' Class: Good Tier. Missing something from Class A 'C' Class: Basic Tier. Missing multiple things from Class A 'F' Class: Awful tier. Inefficient gold costs, offers stats irrelevant to xin, occupies a small gold in its slot. [title]ANALYSIS OF ITEMS[/title] You pay -174.2 gold It occupies 2099.2 gold Additionally:gives aura to team mates My opinion: A solid item that has everything xin needs. Still cost effective even without its aura. Occupies a decent amount of gold in its slot. Passive benefits whole team. Builds from small components. Also note that this is one of the few items that offer the combination of health and magic resist. My Rating:A You pay 788.1 gold It occupies 1566.9 gold Additionally: 2% of additional health converted to attack damage. My Opinion: A situational item. Breaks even with gold cost at 1040 Health. Xin at level 18 has a base health of 2011. So at level 18 this item will provide additional worth of 1525 gold. Effectiveness increases with health items purchased and obviously the higher level you are when you purchase it the more effective it is. My Rating:A You pay 950 gold It occupies 1765 gold Additionally: Will provide mana which is not taken into account, as well as a passive that blocks negative spells every 45 sec. My Opinion: Stats dont lie. 950 wasted gold for passive and mana is extremely expensive. Additionally, passive can easily be blown away by [imgsmall=champ/ashe.png] volley spam or [imgsmall=champ/karthus.png]lay waste, and if you lose the passive during 'poke' phase, then tough luck, you just wasted 950 gold on some mana. Occupies a fairly low amount of gold in its slot. IMHO not a good item, I know its popular, but the maths doesnt lie. My Rating: C You pay -30. gold It occupies 1480 gold Additionally: Provides 25 Tenacity My Opinion: Gain 30 gold and 25 tenacity. Only downside is that it occupies a very low amount of gold in its slot. My Rating: B You pay -277.5 gold It occupies 752 gold Additionally: Nothing My Opinion: An ok item early game and mid game. Obviously, no passive, and low gold occupation cost bring its rating down. My Rating: C You pay 4 gold It occupies 471 gold Additionally: Health Regen not taken into account. My Opinion: Awful item. Regen is wasted once mid game comes around. My Rating: F You pay -34.5 gold It occupies 1384.5 gold Additionally: On hit, you cause 4 damage per second for 8 seconds. Active that reduces enemy healing and regen. My Opinion: Poor item. Gold cost is fine, but occupies a very low amount in its slot. My Rating: C You pay 1409.2 gold It occupies 1200.8 gold Additionally: Provides Health regen and 8% movement speed My Opinion: Poor item. Lets analyze: over 10 seconds(team fight duration), at 2000hp, the regen and passive will provide a total of 150 health. Wasting almost 1.5k gold for regen and movement speed is not worth it. The 1.5k gold spent on regen could have gone to buying a [imgsmall=items/giants-belt.png] and you would be better off in teamfights with it. My Rating: F You pay 1200.9 gold It occupies 1574.1 gold Additionally: Gives mana, and 20% cooldown reduction and attack speed debuff to nearby enemies. My Opinion: Poor item. To much wasted gold on mana which xin doesn't need. My Rating: F You pay 670 gold It occupies 2580 gold Additionally: Provides 40% movement slow on hit. My Opinion: The 670 gold paid to perma slow people is worth it. Occupies a high gold cost in slot as well. My Rating: A You pay 918.4 gold It occupies 1681 gold Additionally:Revives you once every 5 minutes. My Opinion: An ok item. You are basically paying 920 gold for the passive. The passive can be game changing, or you can get aced and revive right in the middle of 5 champions and get killed immediately again. Fairly low gold occupy cost. My Rating: C You pay -4 gold It occupies 1804 gold Additionally:: If you would take magic damage which would leave you at less than 30% of your maximum health, you first gain a shield which absorbs 300 magic damage for 4 seconds. 60 second cooldown. My Opinion: Solid item. Basically a free magic shield. No stats wasted. Built from cheap items. My Rating: A You pay -392.5 gold It occupies 4222 gold Additionally: Crits hit 50% extra damage My Opinion: Is cost efficient, occupies a great amount of gold in slot, passive is useful to xin. Only downside is that it is built from expensive items (have 1650 gold floating for BF sword. Needs some nerfs IMHO. My Rating: S You pay 770 gold It occupies 1520 gold Additionally: 40% armor penetration My Opinion: A mediocre Item. However not gold efficient, and occupies a low gold amount in slot. My Rating: B You pay 807 gold It occupies 468 gold Additionally:Your champion gains 32 health per stack, receiving 2 stacks for a kill and 1 stack for an assist. Stacks up to 20 times My Opinion:Awful item. Breaks even at 10 stacks. My Rating: F You pay 1194.5 gold It occupies 2605 gold Additionally: On hit, deals magic damage equal to 4% of the target's maximum health. My Opinion: As xin you will have no magic pen so it is more approximately like 2% of targets health. Paying 1.2 k gold to do about 2% is not worth it. Situational item at the best (if opponent stacking health or armor). My Rating: B You pay 490 gold It occupies 1335 gold Additionally:Provides some AP. Your physical attacks shred your target doing 20 magic damage and reducing their magic resistance by 6 for 8 seconds. Magic resistance reduction stacks up to 4 times. My Opinion: Awful item. Not gold efficient, Low gold occupation in slot. My Rating: F You pay 1350 gold It occupies 760 gold Additionally: Provides some mana and mana regen. 2% of your maximum mana is converted to attack damage. My Opinion: Awful item. far to much gold wasted on mana and manaregen. My Rating: F You pay 1550 gold It occupies 1335gold Additionally: Provides some ability power, mana regen and cooldown reduction My Opinion: Awful item on xin. My Rating: F You pay 46 gold It occupies Irrelevant gold Additionally: 25% chance on hit to reduce your target's movement speed by 30% for 2.5 seconds. My Opinion: Even though this item upgrades further, I included it so we can analyze why this item is good. 46 gold for a 25% chance to slow. Pretty good. My Rating: S You pay -42.5 gold It occupies 2887.5 gold Additionally: 15% movement speed. My Opinion: Solid item. Gain 42.5 gold worth of stats and 15% movement speed. Sounds pretty good. My Rating:A You pay 555.2 gold It occupies 884.8 gold Additionally: Removes all debuffs from your champion. 90 second cooldown. My Opinion: Situational at best. Very low gold occupation in its slot. My Rating: C You pay 972.5 gold It occupies 2102.5 gold Additionally: Provides some Health regen. 5% cooldown reduction. 20% chance on being hit to slow the attacker's movement and attack speed by 35% for 3 seconds. Can activate this in aoe. My Opinion: The Health regen is wasted gold. The cooldown reduction is minimal. Its up to you to decide whether it is worth it to pay 972 gold for the passive and active slow. In comparison, with [imgsmall=items/frozen-mallet.png], this item is superior if your looking to slow the enemy, since its slow is aoe, not single target. Should be noted that one of its components is a gold per 5 item. This is a plus. My Rating: A You pay 426 gold It occupies 1124 gold Additionally: Provides 10% cooldown and increased healing and regeneration by 15%. My Opinion:You basically pay 426 gold for the cooldown, and increased healing with works of lifesteal and xins passive. However. it occupies a low amouunt of gold in its slot, and is not cost efficient. One of the few items that combine health and mr. My Rating: C You pay 732 gold It occupies 1818 gold Additionally: Provides some regen. Armor Reduction of enemy champions by 20. Aura of lifesteal and attack speed. My Opinion: A solid item. Regen is wasted. But aura of armor reduction and attack speed + lifesteal is situational: 1. You have to be near teamates for it to be effective 2. You have to last long enough in teamfights for it to be effective 3. You have to have several dps auto attackers on your team 4. Your teamates have to stay alive during teamfights as well. As you can see there are plenty of conditions that it requires to maximize it efficiency. My Rating: B You pay 724.5 gold It occupies 1885.5 gold Additionally:Deals 35 Magic Damage a second to nearby enemies. My Opinion:A solid choice. Remember that this damage is aoe, and you are melee so it will probably affect multiple people in a teamfights. My Rating:A You pay 368 gold It occupies 1602 gold Additionally:Every fourth attack deals 100 extra Magic Damage. Active gives 30 armor pen. My Opinion: A good item, however since xin has no magic pen, the 100 extra magic damage can be estimated to be around 50. This then translates into about 15 damage per hit. Paying 368 for 15 damage is definetly a bargain. the Active is also great for the armor pen,and vs dodge teams. My Rating:A You pay 989 gold It occupies 380 gold Additionally: You gain 5 damage per stack up to 20 stacks. My Opinion: Breaks even at about 5 stacks. As a melee, with no escape ability, your chances of dieing are greatly increased. Situational item at best. My Rating: F You pay -26 gold It occupies 2891 gold Additionally:Physical attacks reduce your target's armor by 15 for 5 seconds (maximum 3 stacks). My Opinion: Armor reduction benefits whole team. Good item. My Rating: A You pay 157.5 gold It occupies 2842.5 gold Additionally:Gain an additional 1 Physical Damage and 0.25% Life Steal per kill. Maximum of + 40 Damage and + 10% Lifesteal. Bonuses are lost upon death. My Opinion: At full stacks this item is crazy gold efficient. It gives 40 extra damage worth 1.5k gold. My Rating: A You pay 410 gold It occupies 1590 gold Additionally:On being hit by standard attacks, returns 30% of damage taken as magic damage. A minimum 15 damage must be received My Opinion: Paying 410 gold to do a minimum of 15 damage to enemy each time they hit you is ok. Fairly low gold occupation cost though. My Rating: B You pay 170 gold It occupies 1900 gold Additionally:Provides some health and mana regen. Your attacks splash, dealing 50% physical damage in a small area around the target. My Opinion: Paying 170 gold for some regen and to have you attacks splash. Hmmmm.. the passive is lacking and thats what brings this item down. Still reasonably good from cost effective point My Rating: C You pay 769.5 gold It occupies 3300.5 gold Additionally:12% movement speed. Some mana and ability power. 25% chance to slow. on cast, adds bonus damage equal to 150% of base damage. My Opinion: The movement speed is nice. However the sheen proc is overrated. Lets say you manage to get 4 procs from the sheen in a fight.. that will be about 670 bonus damage. Now the thing is with xin, you want to blow all your spells asap for the crazy burst, and this item forces you to stagger your abilities to maximize its efficiency. Thats what brings this item rating down. My Rating: C You pay 608 gold It occupies 2392 gold Additionally: Provides some regen. Permanently gain health on kills. Bonuses cap at +450 health. My Opinion: This item is tricky. If you rush it, you sacrifice damage and resistances early game. If dont rush it, and get it mid-late game, you will be unlikely to fill it so its not gold efficient. Also at mid game resistances are more gold efficient than hp. My Rating: C You pay 458 gold It occupies 1542 gold Additionally:Your attacks deal 42 bonus magic damage and increase your magic resistance by 5 during 5 seconds (stacks up to 4 times). My Opinion: 42 damage becomes more like 20 taking mr into account. 458 gold for 20 damage is a good bargain. The increased mr is just icing on the cake. Occupies a fairly low amount of gold in its slot. My Rating: A You pay -426 gold It occupies 2026 gold Additionally: Provides free ward. Chance to do bonus damage to minions My Opinion: The number 1 junglers item. This item is crazy efficient. Its like Riot is saying "Here, we will give you 430 gold worth of stats, plus free wards and some bonus damage to minions to top it of!" Nerfs are incoming. It occupies 2k gold worth of space,, so nothing wrong with it really. However, it invests gold in lifesteal which really isn't needed by xin until late game. My Rating: S You pay 837.5 gold It occupies 1848.5 gold Additionally:15% cooldown reduction. 20 Armor penetration. Active gives 20% movement speed and +50% attack speed for 4 seconds + 4 more seconds for autoattacks. My Opinion: That 50% attack speed is worth 1335 gold alone. Plus one of its components is a gold per 5 stat. Basically if you can get some autoattacks in during its active, its more than worth it. If you get CCed during its active, then too bad, you just wasted 800 gold on cooldown reduction and 20 armor pen. My Rating: A

Boots are obviously a must. There are 3 options for xin here as these boots all give +2 movement speed. We can ignore this fact when we compare the cost effectiveness of them. You pay 252.5 gold It occupies 667.5 gold Additionally: Nothing My Opinion: Basically you pay 252 gold for nothing. My Rating:B You pay 805 gold It occupies 395 gold Additionally: Gives 35 tenacity My Opinion: Bacially you paay 805 gold to have 35 tenacity. My Rating:B You pay 452 gold It occupies 397.5 gold Additionally:12% dodge My Opinion: Basically you pay 452 gold to have 12% doddge chance. My Rating:B [title]SUMMARY[/title] [imgsmall=items/berserkers-greaves.png] essentially you pay 252 gold for nothing [imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png] essentially you pay 805 gold for 35 tenacity [imgsmall=items/ninja-tabi.png] essentially you pay 452 gold for 12% dodge Conclusion Option 1.[imgsmall=items/berserkers-greaves.png] Attack speed benefits your cooldowns and passive. Option 2: [imgsmall=items/ninja-tabi.png] If opposition has at least 2 AD carrys, get this. Option 3.[imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png]Only get this if CC is a MAJOR problem. The math doesnt lie. 805 gold for 35 tenacity (35% less CC duration) is a steep price. So only if you can get chain CCed i.e vs a [imgsmall=champ/amumu.png] ult into [imgsmall=champ/sona.png] ult into [imgsmall=champ/ashe.png] ult and slow.

I can bore you all with more maths : ). But I'll just summarize. I will include calculations if asked. Basically its like this... 1 Armor will increase your EFFECTIVE health by 1% No matter what. (ignoring enemy penetration) So if I have 100 armor and 2000 health, I basically have 4000 physical health. if I have 200 armor and 1000 health, I basically have 3000 physical health. Now I can go into details and show you graphs etc, but I promised to summarize... Basically you want health early game because 1 armor will add 1% effective health, but you wont have that much health to begin with, so adding flat health is best. Mid and late game however you want Resistances, as your natural health pool grows, adding 1 armor will increase your effective health by a larger amount than adding the gold equivalent in flat health. Forget what people told you about diminishing returns etc. The bottom line is 1 armor means 1% more effective health. HOWEVER...Flat health protects you against physical AND magical damage, but resistances protect you against only one type. This is important. Early game you also wont know if the enemy AP or AD is the largest threat. So basically you want 1 or 2 health items then pump the rest of the gold into the appropriate resistances. Summary: try to get above 1.5 k health asap (early game), then pump gold into resistances.

I have done the calculations: Prioritize in this order: 1.Attack damage (it is barely better than attack speed...its really CLOSE) 2.Attack speed 3.Critical Strike Getting gold in Attack damage will increase your dps more over 5 seconds than getting the equivalent(in gold cost) of Attack speed. Finally critical strike comes last. Factors that need to be considered. 1.Xin Zhao passive scales of attack speed. 2. Xin zhao cool downs scale of attack speed. 3. On hit effects eg. [imgsmall=items/wits-end.png][imgsmall=items/sword-of-the-divine.png] scale of attack speed 4. Xin zhao has no abilities that scale of AD. 5. Xin zhao (unlike yi) has no attack damage boost (so crit cant scale) Since Attack damage and attack speed, were so close, but attack speed offers xin more benefits, its better to priorotize attack speed, then attack damage then critical strike.

Lets analyze briefly: 1. Level 18 xin zhao with 18% lifesteal ([imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png]) will steal a grand total 226 health of over 10 seconds. (ignoring enemy armor. With enemy armor this becomes even less!) 2. Level 18 xin zhao with 18% lifesteal and 40% attack speed[imgsmall=items/recurve-bow.png] and 45 bonus AD[imgsmall=items/bf-sword.png] will steal a total of 400 life. (ignoring enemy armor. With enemy armor this becomes even less!) Summary Lifesteal not worth its cost early game, you do too little damage, it gets a lot better when you have damage items and attack speed. (Late game)

A list of possible solid choice items for xin: All the above items are Good choices for xin depending on the situation. However, we can only have space for 5 items, so we have to eliminate items The following selection is based on facing a BALANCED TEAM with an equal threat in physical and magical damage. Lets get to work... [imgsmall=items/wits-end.png] is better than [imgsmall=items/hexdrinker.png] because we want to prioritize attack speed over damage. Additionally wits end passive is superior to hexdrinkers. [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] is better than [imgsmall=items/sunfire-cape.png] as a defensive item [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] is also better than [imgsmall=items/thornmail.png] as a defensive item. [imgsmall=items/frozen-mallet.png] can be eliminated... Why? Because if purchased for the slow, [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] is superior, if purchased for the health, resistances would be better. [imgsmall=items/starks-fervor.png] can be eliminated because it is has so many conditions and is inferior to [imgsmall=items/the-bloodthirster.png] and [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] [imgsmall=items/last-whisper.png] is only effective if your opponent is stacking alot of armor, otherwise [imgsmall=items/the-black-cleaver.png] is better. Crit items:[imgsmall=items/atmas-impaler.png][imgsmall=items/cloak-and-dagger.png][imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png][imgsmall=items/phantom-dancer.png][imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png] SEE section on alternative builds. So we end with: (OR) (OR) Deciding what to get early game 1. He needs health more than armor and magic resist (to break 1.5k health asap) [imgsmall=items/heart-of-gold.png] and [imgsmall=items/ruby-crystal.png] 2. He needs attack speed to get his cooldowns better [imgsmall=items/recurve-bow.png] and[imgsmall=items/dagger.png] 3. He doesnt really need damage as most of the damage come from his abilities. 4. He doesnt need lifesteal, as the amount of life gained will be negligible in a fight lasting approximately 10 seconds Deciding what to get mid game 1. As your natural health pool grows, Resistances become more effective: [imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png][imgsmall=items/wardens-mail.png][imgsmall=items/wits-end.png][imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] 2. Attack Speed still remains useful[imgsmall=items/wits-end.png][imgsmall=items/sword-of-the-divine.png] 3. Attack damage[imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png][imgsmall=items/bf-sword.png] 4. Lifesteal becomes more important as your attack damage increases and your base AD increases.[imgsmall=items/vampiric-scepter.png] Deciding what to get late game 1. More resistance[imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] 2. Attack damage and penetration[imgsmall=items/the-black-cleaver.png] 3. Lifesteal[imgsmall=items/the-bloodthirster.png]

vs Balanced team Boots of choice + vs Physical team Explanation: vs teams with mainly dps damage, lifesteal takes on more important role, allowing you to stay in the fight longer, also armor becomes more valuable, therefore [imgsmall=items/wriggles-lantern.png] is swapped for [imgsmall=items/wits-end.png]. vs Magical team Explanation: This build helps prevent you from getting nuked down early in a fight.

As explained in the previous section, building crit chance is inferior to building attack speed and damage, HOWEVER this all changes when you take the [imgsmall=items/infinity-edge.png] passive and the Lethality mastery (bonus 10%crit damage) into account. Possible crit items: Eliminating: [imgsmall=items/phantom-dancer.png] is better than [imgsmall=items/youmuus-ghostblade.png] as it is not vulnerable to CC [imgsmall=items/cloak-and-dagger.png] Occupies to little gold in its slot. Recommended Crit build: Boots of choice + + Situational item Possible situational items: As you can see with crit build it becomes difficult to balance, because there are no crit items that offer defensive stats as well. I personally do not recommend this build, I just included it because someone mentioned it in the comment section.

1. Start of plus 2. Rush 3. 4. 5. finish 6. finish of // depending on enemy team 7. finish 8. 9. 10. finish 11. finish or depending on if you need the armor pen or not.

Unfortunately for you, this game is very snowbally(is that even a word?) and if your opponent is good, you will certainly lose, unless your team bails you out, or your opponent makes mistakes. Step 1. Realize that you are behind... you have effectively 'lost' your lane if a) you are more than 25 cs behind b) you have died to your opponent more than twice, either from ganks or careless play c) you are 2 or more levels behind you opponent from zoning or being forced to bluepill. Step 2. Let your team know... nothing is wrong with asking for help, screw your ego/pride and call for a gank!, the earlier the better. A simple.. "need gank top, im struggling" will suffice. At best, you get a gank from jungle/middle and you kill your opponent, and catch up, at worst you force them to blow summoners and bluepill thereby taking some pressure of your lane (if their summoners are down they shouldn't be able to play aggressively) At very worst, you and your jungler die giving your opponenet a double kill, in which case your totally screwed! Alternatively you can ask for lane switch. Step 3. Learn to turtle. This doesnt mean buy [imgsmall=items/heart-of-gold.png] This means stay under turret. The lane will eventually push and you will just have to do your best to cs at tower. Step 4. Adapt, adapt, adapt. getting crushed by [imgsmall=champ/annie.png]? grab 2X[imgsmall=items/null-magic-mantle.png] one for [imgsmall=items/aegis-of-the-legion.png] and one for [imgsmall=items/hexdrinker.png] later on. Getting destroyed by [imgsmall=champ/renekton.png]? rush your [imgsmall=items/wardens-mail.png] and [imgsmall=items/ninja-tabi.png] Step 5. Avoid equal fights...1 v 1? no. 2 v 2? no. 3 v 3? no. You get the point. Unless you have some clear advantage i.e. numbers, fighting at tower, heck even creep aggro at early levels. Dont fight. Step 6. As a last resort, [imgsmall=items/elixir-of-fortitude.png][imgsmall=items/elixir-of-agility.png] and say a prayer!

As the saying goes..."When you are ahead, get more ahead" That is to say..it is not good enough that you maintain your advantage, you must increase your advantage to ensure your opponent never catches up. Step 1. Play SMART aggressively This means learn to zone your opponent. You see your opponent inching forward to last hit one minion? PUNISH HIM FOR IT! As xin you can really put the hurt on people taking 60% or more of their health. Soon you will have them hunkering down behind their turret scared to move even a tiny bit from the safety of the tower. Then you have them right where you want them. Step 2. Ward up The only way they can come back from the above scenario is by ganks, so you ward the possible gank routes. Dont worry about the cost of consistently warding it will pay for itself if you can avoid a death from gank. Step 3. Invade!Have the enemy red and blue buff warded, and steal them when they are up. Step 4. Group objectives dragon and later baron can really cement your advantage. Step 5. Keep in mind towers not kills win games. Dont get over cocky and dive an opponent who is bluepilling. You will just be falling for the bait. Rather wait for them to bluepill then push your lane to get some damage on the tower.

Xin Zhao is very versatile champion. He can lane top or mid solo, or duo bottom lane with no problems. Play defensively until level 2. Then play aggressive, very few champs can trade blows with xin at early levels. Start of with and Standard Lane Harass Combo (from level 2) [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png] ->auto attackx1 -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png] -> auto attack x3 -> retreat. Keep in mind that this combo does roughly : 50+50+(15x3)+(50*3) ~300 damage from level 2 and going up. This will be useful when judging if you can harass effectively or even dive an opponent. Dont be afraid to take a beating, thats what our defensive masteries and runes are for. Play aggresively. One strategy I found effective in securing kills is to use your [imgsmall=summoners/exhaust.png] early, and make your opponent burn their escape summoner. Immediately call in for a gank afterwards for an easy kill. Aim to farm up at least 1500 gold This will get you , a and some .

Keep up with the standard lane harass. By now you should hopefully be able to zone your opponent. If your lane is pushed you can: [number]1.[/number] Look for an easy gank. (Coordinate with your jungler if possible) [number]2.[/number] Attempt dragon with the help of your team and jungler. [number]3.[/number] Invade the enemy jungle Mid Game Gank Combo [imgsmall=summoners/exhaust.png] -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png] -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/r.png] -> autoattackx1 -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png][imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/w.png] -> follow up with autoattacks and chase with [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png]/[imgsmall=summoners/flash.png] Tower diving: If you can get the full combo of, you can land approximately 600 damage then use [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png]/[imgsmall=summoners/flash.png] for a quick getaway. You should aim to finish building you core so you will have: +// Buffs and You Good news.. you dont need Golem or Lizard. Of course having them is never a BAD thing, but they should be left for your dps carry or mage. Golem: provide mana regen and cooldown. Leave this for your mages. Lizard: provides a slow and additional damage. Leave this for your dps. Respawn times are very important for dragon and enemy buffs if you manage to steal them. Take note when they will be up again so you can position yourself and your team. Golem:5 min Lizard: 5 min Dragon: 6 min Baron: 7 min Farming with Xin Pretty straight forward - focus on last hitting. Use [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png] to take out minion waves faster. Try to avoid using [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/w.png] as it has a rather long cooldown, and [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png] as you want to leave this ready incase and enemy shows up.

By now you should be grouping up. Dont do something silly and get picked! Initiate right after tank and try to use [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/r.png] and [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] to hit as many enemies as possible. Exhaust the dps carry or the ap carry before they cast all their damaging spells. Mid and Late game Team Skirmish Combo [imgsmall=summoners/exhaust.png] -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png] -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/r.png] [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png]-> autoattackx1 -> [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png][imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/w.png] -> autoattacks ->[imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/e.png][imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/q.png] -> [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png]/[imgsmall=summoners/flash.png] to retreat or chase and secure a kill. NB: You want to activate your [imgsmall=skills/xinzhao/r.png] first before [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] due to its 'hidden passive' which provides additional slow based on the amount of armor and magic resist you have. Aim to finish final build: [item=randuins-omen][item=wits-end][item=aegis-of-the-legion][item=the-black-cleaver][item=the-bloodthirster]+// (then if you have extra $)

Your primary goal is to kill the enemy dps OR mage depending on who is most threatening and their proximity. Your secondary goal is to disrupt the enemy team positioning and zone as many player as possible. This is done by using the knock up, and slow from [imgsmall=items/randuins-omen.png] combined with [imgsmall=summoners/ghost.png] and [imgsmall=summoners/exhaust.png] to make sure you STICK to a target. DPS carrier will always run if you charge them and focus them. Supports will generally tend to stick with DPS carries to protect them, so you can effectively 'zone' a[imgsmall=champ/ashe.png] and [imgsmall=champ/janna.png], leaving your team with an advantageous 4 v 3. As a brusier your risk of dieing is high, but if you die and your team wins the fight, it will all be worth it. I promise ;). Just make sure to coordinate with your team. Again you DO NOT initiate fights. Let the tank do that. Your job is to rush in after the tank and absorb any remaining CC and cause the opponent to put their major spells on cooldown.

I would like to thank everyone for their feedback. Soratachi: ...wouldn't IE and ghostblade become more cost efficient if you used them both and got the extra damage off of crits? It would be interesting to see where you can come up with an efficiency, since if you crit 100% (but more like 85) youre automatically doing 250% more damage because of IE. Just a thought... My Response: Good point. I included a chapter on crit build. Thing is you then have to cram into the remaining slots. attack speed, armor pen, lifesteal, and some health and resistances. Andree: wait... do you really think BV is overrated? C rank? wat... My Response: I explained my reasoning for its rank. If passive gets blown away during poke phase then congratulations you just wasted 900 gold on some mana... Alex3: I would love to see the whole report on items and everything, could you post that as a guide? My Response:Would love to. Maybe solomid has a feature for posting generic guides, I will have to ask the mods or something. Discommander:Just out of curiosity. You've listed all the strong magic resist items to be class C or below (FoN and Veil). What should Xin Zhao do against a caster heavy team? Build glass cannon and hope no one drops a Tibber's stun on you? Assuming your tank / support has already purchased an Aegis, what would you recommend to fill that? I disagree with your item build and order. Xin is a very bursty champion, which means you'd want to drop most of your skills within the first 3 seconds and psychologically scare away the enemy. Your build order suggests that you should rush attack speed. You argue that Wit's End is a cost efficient item and that Xin Zhao's passive healing, Battle Cry's cooldown effect, and on hit effects scale off Cooldown. These 3 points are just petty excuses to use Wit's End. You essentially do little damage (not taking Wit's end into consideration) and propose an elongated Auto attack fight (which doesn't take Crowd Controls into account). Summary: Purely having attack speed without damage is impractical./ you're not taking Crowd Controls into consideration.Deal high amounts of burst and run out, rather than prolonging a fight with your fast, on-hit effects. I find it terribly ironic that you prioritise Attack Speed shoes over Mercury Treads, seeing as you need to be in melee range to do any actual damage. If you get stunned, you're useless (which brings me back to the point of doing high burst damage) and slow, you're also useless, seeing as you'll be kited for days (not being in melee range to do damage). Characters like Master Yi / Tryndamere are easily shut down by Stuns. Although I'm not sure how Wit's End + Attack speed would fair in terms of Damage Per Second (whether or not it'd be much better than building Raw damage instead), however, you need to draw a fine line between Cost efficiency and Practicality. You should also offer alternative builds to counter certain teams. Don't neglect Magic Resist items such as Banshee's Veil just because they're not 'Cost Effective' There shouldn't be one static build for every game. My Response: Whew lots of points raised. I included a chapter on what to do vs imbalanced teams. I listed reasons to priorotize attack speed over attack damage as xin. You have 0 abilities that scale with AD etc. You (and several others) are right on the fact that I shouldnt have listed berseker greaves as first choice, However I see far to many players get merc treads blindly. IF and only IF AOE CC is a major problem do i advise merc treads. That is just my opinion. Take it or leave it. exuion: I contest the rank of the following items Banshee is situationally A or S, because it negates some of the nastiest initiate disables (mumu, ashe, tibber, etc). That's why it's been nerfed both in base stat and refresh time. Bloodthirst on xin is a bit iffy, he's meant to go in and initiate and die. keeping 40 charges is neigh impossible and is denying the carry late game farm. Items that have synergies: warmog, force of nature, atmas impaler are incredibly strong when combined. Also, health regen is not a negligible stat esp. when it reaches over 100/5. A lot of fights are kite wars (with this ashe/corki meta), and being able to start the fight at full hp means quite a bit for xin. Divine is used to hunt jaxes, nids, udyrs and sivirs. they shouldn't be discounted. No tenacity will hurt xin, all the aoe disables pretty much will kill xin off the bat with only +600 hp in the entire build. My Response:I would honestly rather get merc treads vs aoe initiate disables rather than a banshees. Blood thirster is still efficient at 0 charges. It only goes up from there. If you are dieing alot then wriggles is a good alternative For SoTD it occupies less gold in its slot than black cleaver. Yes it is still useful vs dodge champions, but really there is only one dodge item in this game. I had rated it A... cant put it higher than that really. Tenacity again. If AOE CC is a problem yes get merc treads. If you are getting merc treads for rammus taunt or taric stun only, I would rather tank the full duration of that rather than my carry. Check the spreedsheet there, that's how you do it bro. My Response:Nicely done. However it doesnt take into account that as xin I dont care about mana, mana regen etc. Good as a general guide though. Bukakea Monster: This guide is horse shit. You have the build of an 8 year old with only one testicle. You waste money on poor items that don't add up to any coherent goal. You spend most of this guide displaying info and number crunching information that isn't relevant to Xin Zhao at all. You could copy paste it into anything you feel like and the guide would look the same. A crap guide, poor build, lots of data that will wow people to thinking you know what you are talking about. This isn't approved for anything related to Xin just champions in general. Many people have also stated that your build is the nigger's income = poor. I hope a Heroes of Newerth fan finds you in an alley and makes you into the faggot you are with his dick 8 inches into your ass. My Response: Dude chill out. I recommend you see a pshychiatrist, it sounds like you have deeps issues than how 'poor' my guide is. Petro: You should include pasives in math, cause manamune and malady are definitley cost-efficient. They may be not slot-efficient or just worse for xin than other items, but you make them look like shit, which they aren't. Charged manamune gives 62 AD to xin and with malady you can add 20 AD (even if its magic dmg). At least you emphasised atma's passive (but the math part still makes it look like shit ;P). My Response: I tried to include the maths for the passive in the section my opinion (e.g. ghost blade, atmas, bloodthirster) I dont intend to make some items look like shit or praise other items. I simply present the maths behind the item, mention if it has other side effects, then form my own opinion based on that. YOU can also form your own opinion...Is 900 gold worth the passive on Banshees veil? I think not, and Mr. John may agree with me. You may think otherwise, and Mr. Joe may agree with you. What you cant argue is that you are paying 900 gold for the passive. Its up to you to form your own opinion. Nots:...you should REALLY include the ghost mastery in your favourite mastery setup because it's worth a million times more than 12 HP! I can't stress this enough. Get the Ghost Mastery! My Response:THANK YOU! Definetly worth it. sexmi:my question is what was your grade on this paper when you submitted it My Response: lol wut? B+ for my group. InfiniteVoid316: i would like to see how you went about calculating whether attack damage, attack speed, or crit is more effective, considering that each of those stats scales with the others. it seems to me you would have to take the base stats and would have to construct some simulation depending on what items you currently have, what items are available to get those stats in which combinations, and so forth. My Response: Yep simple simulation. Take level 18 xin zhao with base stats (include bonus from masteries, runes and his W). Calculate how much damage he can do over 5 or 10 seconds (using no abilities). Then pretend you have 500 gold to spend. Convert that amount of gold into attack speed, attack damage and crit chance. Add these amounts to level 18 xin and compare. Andree:I seriously don't understand how was this guide approved... Terrible item build, terrible masteries, LANE XIN ZHAO... And the item rankings.. oh god. FoN, Banshees Veil, Guardian Angel.. you consider them bad items? But you think Starks is a good item on him? BLACK CLEAVER? Xin Zhao is a bruiser, not a Squishy meelee dps. Wriggles + Yoummus = all the damage you need for him, maybe a Triforce if you are super fed and your team doesn't deal enough damage..... My Response: I am using facts yo justify my opinion. You are using what you see people build. Probably didnt eveen read the reason, you just looked at the item ranking : / .It sure is easy to critique someone elses guide isnt it? Pls post a link to your guide...I would love to see it. phyton1300: Thanks for the Guide. But what i wonder is how the patches affected Xin. Could you add any nerfs, buffs and changes riot had done to Xin? I usually start with 3T-Strike and level this equally with his W for reducing cooldown on my Q again because i thought his Q would do more dmg. (since E scales with AP) or am i wrong on that one? My Response: Yes, I plan to update this guide depending on nerfs/buffs to relevant items and xin. Refere to Skill order chapter for explanation. Agaru: The more and more i think about this gide the less I like it. I love the mathmatical approach but your cost efficient path does not take into account the great passives on items. You cant put a value on those and it greatly skewes your system. I tried wits end and was not a fan of it on xin. And madreds is insanley valuable when dealing with tanky dps or pure tanks so why isnt it even in you "items for xin" section? attack speed, damage, armor, and more magic damage from the passive. sounds great since thats all things you have in your recommended items for xin. Now that it only one example and there are plenty of others. I just don't feel that this approach is viable since passives have no value in your system and for alot of items they will make or break that item. If you had a way of giving those passives a value then this would be much more viable and i honestly belive it would change your guide almost from head to toe My Response: Some passives, we can put a value on e.g blood thirster, atmas impaler. Others we cannot. I simply present the maths, and my opinion. It is therefore up to YOU to decide if the gold is worth the passive.

So this is how I play Xin zhao. I am open to comments on why people might disagree. Constructive criticism is welcome. Also if you dont understand or disagree with some of the maths please raise your concerns in comment section. I do hope that I explained everything clear enough. If many people find this guide helpful, I will probably release a PDF detailing how cost effective each and every item is. I enjoy crunching the numbers and optimization problems : D.
