Malphite is an incredibly strong top laner and is often an instant ban/first pick especially at lower elos. This build was inspired by MaKNooN and Dyrus, arguably the two best top laners. In this build you will learn how to build and play malphite as a top laner magic penetration bully. I'm in the process of getting this guide approved so if there is anything you would like me to address or add in please feel free to comment. Don't forget to like the guide.

[imgext=http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn208/xiLLesT-/Untitled2-1.png] Magic pen reds for top and Magic pen reds or attack speed reds for jungle: Magic pen reds obviously help with your abilities all being magic damage. Your q poke will hit alot harder these are a must run on malphite top because you have no magic pen mastery. Armor yellows: For obvious reasons. Typical yellows for a top laner. These along with your passive will allow you to tank minions to freeze your lane and allow for better trades against your opponent if they are a bruiser. Flat Magic resist blues or Scaling MR blues: Go Flat if your lane is ap or they have a strong ap jungler or mid champ. Go Scaling MR blues if you see no immediate threat of magic damage. Magic pen quints or Movement speed quints are the best on malphite top, I wouldn't get any others: The Magic pen quints help a lot because you don't get the magic pen mastery, but if your not a fan of them, or just don't have them then the Movement speed quits stack very well with the movement speed bonus you get from your q and can actually be the determining factor if you get a kill or survive from a gank.

[title][img=skills/malphite/p.png] Passive: Granite Shield[/title] [number]Malphite is shielded by a layer of rock which absorbs damage up to 10% of his maximum health. If he has not been hit for 10 seconds, this effect recharges. [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Not the most noticeable passive in the game, but it serves a few good purposes. Negates 200+ damage when you initiate fights and help you when last hitting by blocking harass. [title][img=skills/malphite/q.png] Q: Seismic Shard[/title] [number]Deals 70 / 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 (+60% of ability power) magic damage and steals 14 / 17 / 20 / 23 / 26% movement speed from the target for 4 seconds. Cooldown 8seconds Cost 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90mana Range 625[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is your bread and butter skill. It is your best harass and poke skill. Max this first. When you think about it you pretty much slow them for 52% because it takes 26% of their MS and gives it to you. It is great for chasing and running away from ganks. When you hit 6 poke them down with this until you can kill them with a full combo. [title][img=skills/malphite/w.png] W: Brutal Strikes[/title] [number]Passive: Malphite's attacks hit units near his target for 30 / 38 / 46 / 54 / 62% of his attack damage. Active: Increase Malphite's armor and attack damage 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 6 seconds. Cooldown 14 seconds Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Don't even bother putting a point into this skill till you have to. It pushes your lane with the passive making you susceptible to ganks. No one wants to be ganked, unless your MaKnoon then you can just 2v1 them. [title][img=skills/malphite/e.png] E: Ground Slam[/title] [number]Malphite slams the ground dealing 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+50% of his Armor) magic damage to surrounding enemies, reducing their attack speed by 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% for 4 seconds. Cooldown 7 seconds Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Great for trading with melee opponents. They can't kill you 1v1 because of the reduced attack speed. Max this second. It is great for pushing your lane. This has a lower mana cost so use this to push your lane, not your q. [title][img=skills/malphite/r.png] R: Unstoppable Force[/title] [number]Malphite charges towards the target area, dealing 200 / 300 / 400 (+100% of ability power) magic damage and knocking enemies into the air for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds. Cooldown 130 / 115 / 100 / 110seconds Cost 100mana Range 1000[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Best initiation in the game. A 2 second knock up along with the high base damage and 100% ap ratio makes you hit like a truck. Level this up at 6,11,16. When you poke them down enough with your q. Combo them by ulting, q, e, ignite. you can ignite earlier if you want because of the summoner mastery it will give your ult 5 more damage and your Q 3 more damage, but it really doesn't matter. Also remember that this can be used as an escape tool over walls or in lane and even initiate over walls.

Core Items: [item=sorcerers-shoes]([item=chalice-of-harmony] or [item=dorans-ring][item=dorans-ring])[item=haunting-guise][item=giants-belt][item=blasting-wand] If you are behind in lane and need durability skip the magic pen items and chalice and just get durability items. [item=chalice-of-harmony] or 2x[item=dorans-ring] are pretty standard for mana sustain. I personally love the chalice over the dorans rings, but dorans rings are definatly viable and give health, more damage on your ult and q, but give no magic resist and less mana sustain. If you get an early kill in lane and want to press your lead then immediately work your way into your magic pen items item=sorcerers-shoes] and [item=haunting-guise]. This will give you less mana sustain, but will give you the possibility of picking up a second kill and harass them harder. Just manage your mana and you should be fine. If you find yourself needing the mana sustain then pick up the chalice on your next back. Always make sure you ward your lane. [img=items/sight-ward.png] or [img=items/vision-ward.png] if you want limit your lane enemy limited vision and which will in turn give your jungler the ability to gank through river. [item=sorcerers-shoes] and [item=haunting-guise] for more burst for best lane dominance. These give 40 magic pen and in the 14 magic pen you are getting from the runes and your spells are going to be hitting for true damage early to mid game. The 200 extra health from the haunting guise adds 20 hp to your shield making you trade hits more effectively with your opponent. Like I said earlier in the guide [item=deathfire-grasp] is also considered a core item, but ever since the nerf I usually don't get this item anymore on malphite. The 2600 gold cost is a little too much in my opinion and would much rather be able to get into my tanky items faster than acquiring more burst. The basic way to put this is that it gives you the ability to melt carries in one combo, but is extremely overpriced now that the CDR was removed and the base % damage was scaled back. They did increase the ap ratio, but because you don't really get over 200 ap the ratio isn't that good. All personal preference. Go for it if you want the extra burst. [item=giants-belt] Not only does it give you 430hp, but it gives your passive sheild 43 more hp. This will be turned into a sun fire cape later which will low you to put out alot of magic damage in team fights with the passive of the sun fire cape. If If your enemy top laner has abilites that do % of your health then consider picking up a [img=items/chain-vest.png] instead of giants belt. [item=blasting-wand] or [img=items/negatron-cloak.png] You either need to get blasting wand as your or a negatron cloak depending on if you need more MR or more damage. From here you need to decide if you need sun fire first or abyssal scepter. Turn your Giant's belt into a Sun fire and your blasting wand or negatron cloak into an abyssal scepter. [img=items/glacial-shroud.png] so you can turn it into a [item=frozen-heart] after you have the glacial shroud feel free to sell your chalice of harmony for other items because the 425 extra mana from the glacial shroud should be enough for you. Finish [item=frozen-heart] then combo up with it by building [item=randuins-omen] Your E, frozen heart, Randuin's omen is so lethal against Ad carries. Possible Final Build:[item=sorcerers-shoes] sell later for [item=mercurys-treads][item=sunfire-cape][item=abyssal-scepter]([item=randuins-omen]+[item=frozen-heart]) Some would say that this much armor isn't necessary because the % of damage reduced falls off the more armor you get, but you have to remember that your E damage still scales with armor. If you decide to get GA as your 6th item you will have around 385 armor which gives your E an extra 192.5 damage. 6th item situational: ([item=guardian-angel]/[item=banshees-veil]/[item=force-of-nature])/[item=rylais-crystal-scepter] GA is the best choice if you are getting focused and I prefer this item the most because it gives more damage on your E, a wide variety of resistances, and a revive. Ask m5 about the GA they would agree. Banshee's gives you more health, mana, MR, and blocks one spell like a blitz crank's hook where your team didn't want to be initiated on just yet. It is always better to initiate on your terms. Force of nature gives the most health sustain and resistance against magic damage and is a great 6th item. Rylai's crystal scepter is probably my least favorite, but it makes where you can pretty much perma slow the targets you are attacking with your e an q and I am pretty sure even your ulti slows them. Just focus on farming and taking limited harass. Feel free to throw a Q every once in a while to harrass, but do not spam it. At low levels throwing 3-4 Qs in succession can literally make you OOM (Out of Mana). On your first back try to get a chalice of harmony for your mana sustain. Two dorans are also a more tanky less mana sustain substitute, but cost more gold than a chalice. Now your mana sustainis quite high and can poke them more often with your q. Poke them down with your q and ask for a gank when they are half health or so.

Once you hit level 6 this is where your killing potential begins. Poke them down with your Q till about 50% health. Once they are around 50% of health R,Q,E,ignite and they should be dead. If not continue to auto attack until they die, but be aware of their jungler before going all in. If you kill your lane go down to dragon with your team or try to get other objectives likes your tower or middle lane's tower. If you kill your tower or the enemy top then you want to go help mid or bot and try to get them kills. This is the key to success in solo que.

If your in solo que help your team out with wards because more than likely your support isn't warding properly or enough. Keep timers on dragon, your buffs, their buffs, and baron because more than likely your jungler won't. If you win your lane by a lot then try to lead them do victory. Keep wards on baron and use your ult to initiate team fights. Hopefully you have your abyssal sunfire cape combo, which in my opinon are two of the best items that synergize together. Another combo that you should be getting soon or later that have great synergism is (Frozen heart and randuins). I will discuss what to do in team fights in the next section.

You are arguably the best initiator in the game. Your passive will allow you to negate some damage when you initiate and if you land your ult on the entire team it is pretty much gg for that team fight assuming your team follows up and focuses the correct targets. Right before you go in activate your W to give you 40% extra armor and ult in. When you ult in immediately find their Ad Carry and QE him and activate your randuins if you have purchased it. This will zone him out of the fight completely and his damage out put will be decreased dramatically with your (E+Randuins+Frozen Heart combo)

Easy match-ups: [img=champ/jax.png]: If he jumps on you all you have to do is Q and run away if you don't want to trade. This movement speed steal is great for keeping him from sticking to his targets. When you get a chalice it is pretty much free poke and gives great resistance from his Ultimate passive and abilities. If you decide to all in him then make sure to e him whenever you can to decrease his auto attack speed. Getting a sucessful gank early can win this lane 3 minutes in. Be aware though if he gets more jungle presence and a few kills he can bully you a bit. [img=champ/fiora.png]: Same deal as with jax if she jumps on you and tries to go all in just q and walk away. Think about getting ninja tabi instead. If you feel you can kill him in a 1v1 just make sure to use your e on him to decrease the damage he puts out. The attack speed reduction is huge in all in trades. [img=champ/xinzhao.png]: Do the same as above. All 3 of these have gap closers so just use your q to and e if you just decide you can kill him because it will dramatically decrease his DPS. His leap will only take down your shield so just trade with him after he leaps. [img=champ/tryndamere.png]: If he rushes [img=items/wriggles-lantern.png] you can just q and e him to out trade his harass, but be careful of his ultimate because you can waste your whole combo and still not get the kill. [img=champ/masteryi.png] Pretty similar to tryndamere. Just E him when he goes in on you and out trade him. When he is level 6 tho he becomes really hard to kill with his ultimate, because your q doesn't slow him. Try to poke him down until you can 1 combo him down to 0hp. [img=champ/pantheon.png]: His spear only breaks your shield and if he jumps on you, just q and e him to win the trade. He has the ability to spam more abilities than you early, so watch your mana when trading. [img=champ/gangplank.png]: His q will only take off your shield and you out trade him with your combo. Just be careful if he is critplank, which in this case you may need [img=items/ninja-tabi.png] and a [img=items/dorans-shield.png]. [title]Medium/Farm match ups:[/title] [img=champ/chogath.png]: Farm lane, not many champions can match up with Cho'gath's sustain. Just try to focus on farming. Think about picking up gp10s instead of magic pen, unless your jungler can get you ahead early. [img=champ/darius.png]: You can win this match up easily actually if you poke him down, but his ult is what makes him kind of a medium match up. If he gets a good gank and lands his ult it could kill you. In team fights I feel you make a bigger impact with your 2 second knock up, but if the team focuses you and he ults you say good bye. [img=champ/fizz.png]: Your Q is longer range than all his abilities, but he can dodge them and win trades with his playful trickster, seastone trident, and urchin strike. Rush chalice against him for that extra MR and mana sustain. When he dodges your first q, just use it again on him when it is off cool down. His playful trickster skill has a longer cool down than you q. When he [img=champ/leesin.png]: Lee sin's mobility and sustain can be really annoying if he maxes his shield first. Not only can he sheild your q, but he can then begin to life steal off you or creeps. Also, if you ultimate him to try to go for a kill he can kick you away with his ultimate and then shield a ward or minion to escape. He can also be quite hard to gank so try to get him to use his shield before having your jungler gank or prepare to tower dive. [img=champ/shen.png] He can shield your harass and sustain it with his vorpal blade. Just farm up and think about getting gp10s instead of magic pen. Be careful of ganks in combo with his taunt. [img=champ/singed.png]: When you try to last hit he will fling and poison you. This lane is really annoying. Think about getting a [img=items/regrowth-pendant.png] along with your [img=items/chalice-of-harmony.png] to sustain his poison. #1 rule for playing against a singed is don't run in his poison. [img=champ/warwick.png]: Not a very popular pick, but he can be quite annoying. His Q hits your for a % of your health and heals him for 80% of the damage. Alot of Lanewicks will also pick up a [img=items/chalice-of-harmony.png] for mana sustain and Magic resist. His passive and q sustain will out trade your harass. You are more useful in team fights as long as your Ad carry gets a quick silver sash for warwick's ultimate. [img=champ/irelia.png]: Try not to stay higher health than her as weird as it may seem. You don't want to give her free stuns on her e. When she stuns you it is pretty much free damage from her W. If she activates her W to fight you just q and run away and when it goes off feel free to go back in and win the trade. Be careful though. If she gets ahead by a gank she can give you trouble. [img=champ/akali.png]: Here early burst can be quite annoying, but if you build some MR you will be able to out trade her. Just try not to let her proc her Q on you because it can be bursty. Especially when she hits level 6 throws a Q waits for the CD, then ultimates you to proc first Q then follows up with a second Q and proc. Also if she uses her shroud just E the shroud and take cover inside a bush so she can't use her ultimate and q's on you while hiding in her shroud. [img=champ/vladimir.png]: You can win this match early if you can force him to back early or even get a kill. He is really weak pre-level 6. After level 9 his sustain is ridiculous with a 2-3 second cooldown on his Q. When he gets higher levels he will win trades. His q and your q are about the same range, but he just out trades you because his q heals him and yours doesn't heal you. [title]Hard match-ups:[/title] [img=champ/olaf.png]: True damage op. His True damage out damages your q and his sustain from his w is really good. If he gets ahead early with a gank this can be a nightmare. [img=champ/rumble.png]: Your pretty much a dead man. A good rumble will just sheild your harass and then turn on his flamespitter to out trade you. He isn't mana dependent so he can bully you all day long. Anytime you try to go last hit expect a flamespitter in the face. Build mr with [img=items/chalice-of-harmony.png] and [img=items/mercurys-treads.png]. Get an early [img=items/negatron-cloak.png] to turn it into an [img=items/abyssal-scepter.png]. To be honest it is best to install the Korean meta and try to 2v1 the bot lane. You will have more success 2v1ing the bot lane than trying to face a rumble. [img=champ/yorick.png]: He just out harasses you because of his sustain, but you will more useful in team fights depending on his team's ad carry is more fed or not. When you ult their team and kill their ad carry he will revive the ad carry and you were pretty much useless. Be careful of the Yorick/Vayne combo. You will drop in a heartbeat if the vayne is fed and yorick uses his ultimate on before she dies. Two vaynes attacking you once is overpowered. [img=champ/jayce.png]: His knock back is really strong because it does a % of your health which is one of malaphite's weaknesses. His poke is also better than yours with his acceleration gate/shock blast. Even if you get an early kill on him and get ahead he will still be able to farm well with his shock blast and range stance. He can still even out trade you when he is behind. Try to get help from your jungle. If he is maxing his E first, which is his knock back then build a [img=items/negatron-cloak.png] to lessen the damage. However, if he is maxing his q, which is his shock blast, first then build a [img=items/chain-vest.png] to lessen the damage of his poke. His poke does physical damage and his knock back nuke does magical damage so just build to counter what he is using most to harass you.

[img=champ/orianna.png]: The main reason she synergizes well with Malphite is because she can give him a movement speed boost for initiating and then shield him for when he uses his ultimate then she can follow up with her ultimate ability shock wave. This wombo combo has been seen in MLG and world finals. This has to be one of the top champions that synergize with malphite. [img=champ/nocturne.png]: The disruption that malphite causes in team fights followed up by a nocturne ultimate can kill the enemy ad carry and disrupted the team fight enough to allow your ad carry and ap carry stay in the back lines safe and put out the damage. Also when nocturne is level 6 he can ultimate in and fear the enemy and if the enemy flashes you can follow up with your ultimate,q,w,e ignite combo and still be able to flash out of tower range if you tower dive. [img=champ/leesin.png]: Not the best synergism, but when you initiate with your ultimate Lee sin can shield to you and hopefully use his ultimate to kick the ad carry or ap carry into your team. [img=champ/katarina.png]: Your ultimate into a katarina shunpo, ultimate can be devastating to the enemy team and will pretty much win the team fight for your team. This combo was also seen in world finals and MLG. [img=champ/karthus.png]Have Karthus put up his wall of pain and hope that the enemy team walks through it when retreating. If they walk through it just use your ultimate, which will do so much damage from the reduced MR from the wall of pain and your abyssal + all your magic pen. If you get your ultimate on them in a group it sets karthus up to get in the middle of them with his defile and lay wastes. [img=champ/kennen.png]Your initiation followed up with kennen's lightning rush, Slicing Maelstrom, and zhonya's hourglass is so much cc and damage. [img=champ/galio.png] Your Ultimate followed up with galio's ultimate is 4 seconds of CC where they hopelessly can't do a single thing about your team. [img=champ/drmundo.png]Your abyssal allows Dr. Mundo's burning agony to hit really hard. When you intiate he can just ult in and turn on his burning agony and together you two can kill the opposing team's carries. [img=champ/cassiopeia.png]If the enemy team is grouped up your ultimate sets up a perfect ultimate for Cassiopeia. Something funny is that you can ult people as cassiopeia as they are in mid air from malphite ult and they freeze in the air till the stun wears off. [img=champ/amumu.png]Similar to Galio. After they come down from your knock-up then they have to get ready for another 2 seconds of a stun from the curse of the sad mummy. [img=champ/alistar.png]Multiple knock ups one after another is overpowered. Alistar can also headbutt the enemies carries from their back-line into your team. [img=champ/morgana.png] Not that popular of a pick anymore, but Malphite ultimate followed up with morganna's binds and ultimate can turn a team fight completely around in your favor. [img=champ/sona.png] CC heavy teams win games. Especially at lower elos. If she can land her ultimate on their entire team after you initiate with your ultimate they you can win the team fight easily assuming your not too farm behind. She can also pop her Shurelya's Reverie so the team can follow up after your ultimate. [img=champ/vladimir.png]You can do this 1 of two ways. Have Vladimir ultimate first then pull right away so you can use your ultimate on the team to do 12% more damage or you can use your ultimate first to set vladimir up for a perfect ultimate. [img=champ/zilean.png]Zilean will speed you up and put double bombs on you so you can run in there and initiate with your ultimate. If he has decent ap then those double bombs together will deal over 1000 magic damage to the enemy team and there is nothing they can do to dodge it because they will be knocked up from your ultimate. This has to be one of the most fun combos to run. [img=champ/zyra.png] Like any of the others he synergies very well with aoe ults. Two knock ups are very strong and can't be reduced by tenacity. Then switched lanes with our orianna to go mid because they had a Froggen Lee sin Mid lol. CAUTION: I do use some offensive language, please do excuse me. Even tho this yorick was a little unskill I still show how to use malphite's passive to avoid yorick's harass and make him drain his mana.
