Malzahar is rising back to the throne of AP Carries. Other top picks are being nerfed, and Malz is getting buffed with amazing Chinese Art. This is the best time to learn him and harness his potential. He's also a monster in ranked. Dat Ult. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] [imgext=] [imgext=]

[imgext=] Marks: Magic Pen: Needed for all AP casters to negate (at least some) MR. Seals: Mana Regen Per Level: I seem to run oom as Malz more than you would think. These help with mana problems throughout all stages of the game. (If flat mana regen is your style, go for it. It's personal preference.) Glyphs: AP Per Level: Basic AP Glyphs to do the damages! Quints: Flat AP: 15 AP at level one is really good. [imgext=] A possible defensive option is to take MR glyphs instead of AP/lvl. Only do this if you feel you'll have trouble against your lane match-up. (Vs. [imgsmall=champ/kassadin.png][imgsmall=champ/leblanc.png][imgsmall=champ/veigar.png] etc)

[title][img=skills/malzahar/p.png] Passive: Summon Voidling[/title] [number]After casting 4 spells, Malzahar summons an uncontrollable Voidling to engage enemy units for 21 seconds. Voidlings have 200 + 50 x lvl Health and 20 + 5 x lvl Damage. Voidlings Grow after 7 seconds (+50% Damage/Armor), and Frenzy after 14 seconds (+100% Attack Speed).[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Help you push lane, harass with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png], and kill with your full combo. [title][img=skills/malzahar/q.png] Q: Call of the Void[/title] [number]Malzahar opens two portals to the void. After a short delay, they fire projectiles which deal 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+80% of ability power) magic damage and silence champions for 1.4 / 1.8 / 2.2 / 2.6 / 3 seconds. Cost 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130mana Range 900[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Good for the silence, but doesn't provide much burst to your combo early on. It's good to finish people off, but as for harassing- it's not guaranteed damage and you might just waste your mana. [title][img=skills/malzahar/w.png] W: Null Zone[/title] [number]Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy for 5 seconds. The zone damages nearby enemies for 4/5/6/7/8% (+0.01%) of their max health each second (damage to Monsters is capped). Cooldown 14 seconds Cost 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130 mana Range 800 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is necessary to land with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] to do incredible damage. If you can also get a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] off, you might be able to 100-0 someone. [title][img=skills/malzahar/e.png] E: Malefic Visions[/title] [number]Malzahar infects his target's mind, dealing 80 / 140 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+80% of ability power) magic damage over 4 seconds. If the target dies during this time, the visions pass to a nearby enemy and Malzahar gains 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 mana. Cost 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120mana Range 600[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This is Malz's bread and butter. It makes him an incredible farmer, pusher, and burst mage with his combo. [title][img=skills/malzahar/r.png] R: Nether Grasp[/title] [number]Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress the target (stuns and disables summoner spells), dealing 250 / 400 / 550 (+130% of ability power) magic damage over 2.5 seconds. Cost 150 mana Range 575[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] At level 6 is when the magic happens. If you've landed a few [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png]s on your opponent during laning, a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png][imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png][imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png][imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png] combo will one shot anyone if they havn't gone back for health items yet. Mid and Late game, you can gank other lanes, catch squishies, and generally just destroy anyone.

[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] R Always: Self-explanatory. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] E First: To farm, harass, and sustain with the mana return. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] W Second: To increase your burst damage with a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png][imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] combo. [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] Q Last: A good skill, but not as good to max early as your others.

Malzahar's full combo, if given the chance, is [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png]>[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png]>[imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png]>[imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png] with a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/p.png] ready to spawn on your first cast. To top it off, a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] should be thrown in either at the very beginning (To prevent a flash away) or at the very end (To finish this apparently invincible person off). With [imgsmall=items/rylais-crystal-scepter.png] You will slow anyone with [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] on them by 15% and it will make your combo much easier to land. If this doesn't kill your target, then you were at least successful in getting them to buy a [imgsmall=items/quicksilver-sash.png] instead of what they really wanted. [youtube][/youtube] Want to see more? Here's a league replay of a typical Malzahar ranked game: And a 13-1-10 Normal game (I do get a chance to camp the river brush and get a full combo off):

[title]Easy Match-Ups:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/annie.png]- You have the range advantage. If you go in for the kill, land a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] first to prevent her combo. Or just go in for the kill without her stun stacked. [imgsmall=champ/brand.png]- He's squishy and you can beat him handily if you dodge a few skillshots. Remember that his ult can bounce off of your voidlings. [imgsmall=champ/fizz.png]- Melee mids are very easy for Malz to beat. If he doesn't get zoned out being afraid of you, kill him and make him afraid of you. He'll die in one combo for sure. [imgsmall=champ/fiddlesticks.png]- One of the squishiest mids in the game. Harassing won't do much because he'll drain it all back, but the drain leaves him as a sitting duck and you can [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] him to stop it. He's also very easy to combo and kill. [imgsmall=champ/karthus.png]- Again, a really squishy mid, just look out for Q's or just stand on top of your minions. Note: If you notice him ulting, a flash [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] or [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] just to stop it can save a teammate. [imgsmall=champ/ziggs.png]- Sidestep his Q and once again, take advantage of this squishy little guy. [imgsmall=champ/katarina.png]- Another melee mid. Watch out for her ult burst, but it also keeps her in place for you to land an easy combo. Know when you can turn on her and beat her. [imgsmall=champ/heimerdinger.png]- Don't chase him into his turrets and you'll be okay. Get a WotA before deathcap in order to deal with his rocket harass. [imgsmall=champ/orianna.png]- YOU have to be the aggressive one here. She won't harass you with her ball as much if she's on the defensive. [imgsmall=champ/twistedfate.png]- Dodge the wild cards and you'll be in good shape. And they're really easy to avoid. You can go aggressive, but when you see him lock in a gold card- be careful. [imgsmall=champ/vladimir.png]- Malz is a good counter to Vlad because you can lock him down in an ult before he can troll pool. If you do this with a gank from your jungler, it's an easy kill. Since Vlad naturally gets a lot of health from his passive, it will become more difficult to kill him solo as the game goes on, but it also means your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] does more damage. [title]Medium Match-Ups:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/leblanc.png]- The way to counter LeBlanc is to push her to her tower. Although [imgsmall=champ/sion.png] is a better counter-pick, Malz can hold his own. To deal with her burst, get a WotA and Rylai's before Deathcap. [imgsmall=champ/kennen.png]- It's a pretty even match-up here. Try not to get stunned too often and try to beat him in CS. Going aggressive may lead to a Kennen flash/ulti. [imgsmall=champ/chogath.png]- This is pretty much a farm-off. You might be able to get a kill on him early, but as time goes on he'll be too tanky to kill in a single combo. [imgsmall=champ/anivia.png]- Anivia would be an easy lane opponent, except that combo'ing her just puts her into egg form. Just try to avoid her Q. [imgsmall=champ/xerath.png]- You can kill him in a combo, and he can kill you. Play smart and not too aggressive. Outplaying him is the way to win the lane. [imgsmall=champ/swain.png]- A push over before 6, but he becomes a real tank after he gets [imgsmall=items/rod-of-ages.png]. To kill him, just wait for a gank. [imgsmall=champ/gragas.png]- A little beefy for an AP carry. He has sustain and good burst. Avoid barrels and it shouldn't be hard at all. One combo may not be able to kill him so get a little harass on him first. [imgsmall=champ/morgana.png]- The perma-ban of low elo, Morg. She's actually not that difficult to beat. Just out-push her or push back as much as she does. Just don't walk into obvious binds and you'll do fine. [imgsmall=champ/malzahar.png]- I don't like mirror matches, but if it happens to you, just outplay your opponent or hope that your jungler is better. [imgsmall=champ/ahri.png]- A really annoying mid in soloqueue because of her ult. Good thing Malz locks her down in place. If you [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] her during a gank, she can't ult away. [imgsmall=champ/veigar.png]- Just don't walk into his stun, and if you see him charging at you to land it, back off. He's easy to combo, but he can just as easily kill you. Just push to his tower and bully him early game. [imgsmall=champ/akali.png]- She's an assassin, an anti-carry, and you're a squishy. Be careful. If she hits 6 before you, don't push out, she can and will kill you. You also can't do much when she shrouds after ever .5 second. Wait for a gank or to get blue. You can kill her eventually. [imgsmall=champ/lux.png]- Not that difficult for Malz, but she has great range. It's hard to get close for a combo. Consider flashing onto her and finishing her off, but be sure you know their jungler isn't there. [imgsmall=champ/mordekaiser.png]- His shield is annoying. Don't try and kill him unless it's all the way down. If you know it is, you can zone him from minions so he can't charge it. This is when you have the chance to kill him. [imgsmall=champ/ryze.png]- He's an easy opponent early game, but he'll get much more tanky as the game progresses. Once he has [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] you'll have to pop it and get him low before you ever think about 1v1'ing him. [imgsmall=champ/viktor.png]- Viktor is another tanky mage. You can bully him early and win, but his ult's silence shouldn't be underestimated. Just don't think Viktor is a troll pick mid. [title]Hard Match-Ups:[/title] [imgsmall=champ/galio.png]- He won't have much kill potential on you, and you don't on him because he'll just stack MR. Try to outfarm him and gank other lanes. [imgsmall=champ/cassiopeia.png]- Cass. One of the best, if not THE best, mid in the game. Avoid her Q as much as possible, and wait for a gank. You can combo her for a kill, but if she lands her ult on you, you're done for. Pushing harder than she can will help you, but you also may get zoned. Just play smart. [imgsmall=champ/sion.png]- Sion is a melee AP, but he's fairly tanky. If you run in for a combo, you'll either get stunned or he will just shield and be fine. Just don't allow him to push to your tower and roam. Push right back and push harder. Try to lock him down. [imgsmall=champ/talon.png]- A really good counter-AP. The silence prevents you from doing too much, but you can silence him as well. If you go in for a kill, be sure to land it first. [imgsmall=champ/kassadin.png]- Again, the silence is the problem. It's basically free harass for him. Ask for a gank pre-6 and after 6, just keep him from roaming like Sion.

-At level 1, cast [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] twice in spawn, and once again to leash blue. Your next cast will now spawn a [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/p.png], so at lvl 2, cast [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] on your lane opponent and both the DoT and your voidling will be doing damage. -Don't use your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/e.png] too early or you won't be able to even kill creeps and let it jump. If you use it too much you won't have enough mana for a free kill at lvl 6. Also remember that on a cannon minion wave it might not get past the cannon minion early on. -At 6, try to get a kill off your ult ASAP. If your opponent is playing too passive to kill, try to zone then a bit, while watching for ganks. Also think about ganking top or bot.

-This is where you should be farming like a boss and racking up kills. If you can't seem to get a kill in your lane, push it up really quick and roam to another lane. Make sure you tell them in advance so you don't waste time for nothing. -If you see the enemy mid lane run off to gank, either push to his tower or follow him. ALWAYS ping him as he move to another lane (assuming you have it warded) so your team doesn't die. If you see him on his way back, sit in a bush and wait to unleash your combo. -Another strategy for getting a good combo off is to bait your opponent into following you to a side lane. When he thinks you went for a gank and heads down to help, sit in the bush and kill him as he enters. It won't work all the time, but if you see your lane opponent react when you leave lane, try this. -Try to get your jungler to give you blue, and with your infinite mana, always consider taking your wraiths, or even the enemy wraiths if you have it warded. It helps you to majorly outfarm your opponent.

-When it hits late game, or team fight phase, your job is to catch one of their carries out of position and to kill them. If you make the fight 5v4, you've done well. Also remember that if you're getting engaged ON, [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] makes you a sitting duck, but if your team is the one engaging, [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] makes THEM a sitting duck. -If their carries are playing too safe to catch, consider [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png][imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png]'ing someone a little more durable. Your [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/w.png] does % damage and is good at killing bruisers or even tanks. Just make sure your team can follow up on killing this person, or you'll have wasted [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/r.png] and that means you're in trouble. -If your team is bad at warding late game, or if no one has room for wards, remember that [imgsmall=skills/malzahar/q.png] gives vision for a second and you can check bushes with it.
