I return, to deal death with magical fingers of burning people alive with arcane. Due to the drastic changes to Ryze over the last year I found it appropriate to construct another guide for your beloved visual pleasure, I will be listing tips, tricks and the way I construct Ryze to augment him into one of the scariest and most resilient nukers out there at the moment, god I sound depressing, forgive me. I can only play three characters effectively within midlane and Ryze is one of them, I just feel as though he suites my aggressive playstyle while being one of the most potent mages currently available past 2k elo. Ryze is a unique caster in several ways: First he can truly steamroll out of control regardless of being fed or not, he is one of the best natural scalers due to his high base mana per level allowing those extra kills just to be icing on the cake to finishing his build quicker. Having a massive mana pool allows him to be in the fight for a prolonged amount of time in comparison to other mages, and with his short cooldowns he is one of the most damage efficient casters in the game. Second, due to his innate mana scaling and abysmal ap scaling, you are encouraged to buy mana orientated items such as Glacial Shroud and Catalyst, allowing you to gain damage from tanky mana based items, this allows you to gain the durability of a bruiser with the lethality of a full AP carry all in one sweet package. Although being a very simplistic character, I strangely never get bored of this mid ranged bruiser-mage, he can pretty much dominate any rival within the lane and within team fights, and once you gain a blue buff you can keep going, and going and going, its always fun to gain 50 mana each second, with maximum cooldown reduction. Arcane Mastery (Innate) – Now, although Ryze is regarded as a total faceroll of a character, this passive will determine each of your spell combos and the way you dish them out, I adore this passive as with cooldown reduction you attain from items such as Frozen Heart you can dish out the nukes one after the other, levelling your enemies into oblivion. This passive will separate the good Ryzes from the great ones. Overload – The most devastating primary spell most mages can offer, short cd, decent range, costs pretty much no mana and scales incredibly well once you attain a Tear, allows you to poke and burst enemies into oblivion, if that wasn’t enough it also gives passive cooldown reduction per rank up to a maximum of 10% Rune Prison – Although Ryzes only controlling ability, this ability allows you to tear apart your foes with additional spells, and sentence your target to a painful existence, early on using this spell in conjunction with a jungle gank will allow you to score first bloods fairly easy. Spell Flux – Now scales with mana, and is a delicious farming tool in conjunction with desperate power, don’t get me wrong it’s a great spell, however I just prefer the single target nuke that rune prison offers. Desperate Power (Ultimate) – This ultimate used to be awful back in the day, but now it has 4 awesome aspects that act as a temporary steroid for Ryze to enjoy: Active spell vamp, Active AOE, costs no mana to activate, and it reduces your other cooldowns by 1 due to your Arcane Mastery, although I primarily use this to farm and as a clutch cooldown reduction it has hundreds of uses which augment Ryze into a beast. It is technically the only mage orientated steroid in the game, allowing Ryze to become a truly outrageous caster, for a limited but tasteful time.
Skill Priority (Left to Right) Rune Prison (W) – Level 1 Overload (Q) – Level 2 Overload (Q) – Level 3 Spell Flux (E) – Level 4 Overload (Q) – Level 5 Desperate Power (R) – Level 6 Overload (Q) – Level 7 Rune Prison (W) – Level 8 Overload (Q) – Level 9 I pick rune prison first as it can ensure first bloods in conjunction with your allies before the match starts, and it’s still decent damage in comparison to picking Overload first, the only downside is you cannot poke your rival straight out of the bat. Desperate Power is picked at every opportunity as it expands your utility capabilities and fighting strategies, allowing you to utilize its many features to different situations, such as sustainability, combos and mobility. Overload is your shortest cooldown, and primary damaging spell, with its decent range you can poke rivals, helping you win the lane while being able to burst them should they play too risky, when considering combos this spell should be your primary focus. Rune Prison also scales with mana, making it another primary focus within defensive and offensive combos, its cooldown is quite long however its burst and pin are incredibly powerful in conjunction with Overloads and Spell Flux. Spell Flux, is a decent spell, and with the introduction of innate mana scaling it ensures Ryze has even more potency within late game, however I still feel there is limited reason to level it over Rune Prison as there is no guarantee your bounces will consistently hit your primary target.
As Ryze you want to steamroll out of control, butcher anyone who gets in the wrong position and never stop bashing your enemies faces into the dust (past early game!), relentless and swift short bursts will allow you to dominate most foes while giving you more room to breathe, as the only defense Ryze really has is how well he can scare his enemies while scaling into the late game. Your item composition MUST be primarily mana based, there is no point in gaining any additional AP until you have completed all the core and luxury items, luckily the most reliable Ryze build gives you all the mana, health and defensive stats you need to outlast, outdamage and outclass the oppositions AP carry. Sadly, because Ryze is completely mana based, this means early game will be your hardest time, you will likely be punished by a wide array of rivals until you can complete your Tear or Catalyst depending on your preference, but as soon as you hit that point you will realize a drastic increase in your damage. Example Spell Combos: General Burst “take this scroll and stick it somewhere safe†[imgsmall=skills/ryze/q.png] (Q)–[imgsmall=skills/ryze/w.png] (W) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/e.png] (E) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/q.png] (Q) Hit and Run “never engage a fair fight†[imgsmall=skills/ryze/q.png] (Q) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/w.png] (W) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/e.png] (E) Sustain / AoE Farm “blood, for the BLOOD GOD†[imgsmall=skills/ryze/q.png] (Q) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/r.png] (R) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/e.png] (E) – [imgsmall=skills/ryze/w.png] (W) - [imgsmall=skills/ryze/q.png] (Q)
Starting Items: [imgsmall=items/boots-of-speed.png] Boots + [imgsmall=items/health-potion3.png] 3 Health Pots Standard early items that allow you to score last hits, dodge enemy skill shot harassment and assist with the jungler when required, also increases your chances of escaping enemy jungler ganks [imgsmall=items/null-magic-mantle.png] Null Magic Mantle + [imgsmall=items/health-potion2.png] 2 Health Pots In conjunction with mres runes, this ensures that heroes such as Cassiopiea (that will ineivitably poke you out of lane) will have a much harder time at acheiving this without crippling your item progression Core Items: [imgsmall=items/catalyst-the-protector.png] Catalyst Catalyst is an excellent early game sustainability and survivability item with also drastically boosts your damage and poking capabilities early on, it also transitions into the most magic defensive item Banshees Veil [imgsmall=items/glacial-shroud.png] Glacial Shroud Much like catalyst, shroud boosts your early game survivability and provides you with an amazing armor and mana boost to increase your damage and durability, it also upgrades into frozen heart which is another incredible item for Ryze [imgsmall=items/tear-of-the-goddess.png] Tear of the goddess The most damage, cost efficient item you can acquire for Ryze, it also allows you to pump up your damage by last hitting creeps like Veigar, while supplying you with extra mana regeneration to keep doing this, while poking your rival out of the lane. It can also be upgraded into Archangels Staff however that is not of utmost importance [imgsmall=items/hextech-revolver.png] Hextech Revolver In conjunction with your ultimate: Desperate Power you can regain a massive bundle of health within a team fight while allowing you to keep your health topped off within the lane and before team fights [imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png] Sorcerer Shoes / [imgsmall=items/mercurys-treads.png] Mercury Treads Obvious choices for Ryze, depending on how many disables your enemies has will depict which boots you pick, a majority of matches Mercury treads are the required choice to allow you to postpone purchasing Banshees Veil Luxury Items: [imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png] Banshees Veil Furthermore enhances your mana pool, adds slightly more health and provides you with an excellent anti initiation barrier that allows you to overcome skirmishes against over mages while providing you with an excellent amount of magic resistance to ensure you dont get nuked into oblivion [imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png] Frozen Heart In conjunction with Banshees Veil, Ryze becomes an excellent skirmisher and team fighter due to his item based durability that allows him to pump out incredible damage while being as resilient as a bruiser and offtank, it also serves as a soft counter to AD carries and other physical damage orientated champions [imgsmall=items/will-of-the-ancients.png] Will of the Ancients Furthermore enhances your sustainability while boosting your damage slightly more, its just icing on the cake to boost your allies and yourself, it is not the primary focus of my build [imgsmall=items/void-staff.png] Void Staff Once I acquire all the tanky mana based items that I feel are required on Ryze, Void staff allows him to drastically increase his damage due to the immense magic penetration, it just ensures that Ryze maintains his threatening presence within late game [imgsmall=items/archangels-staff.png] Archangels Staff The absolute final item I will construct within my matches, much like will of the ancients it is not essential for Ryze however it boosts his damage slightly more while being relatively easy to construct Overkill and Unnecessary Items: [imgsmall=items/manamune.png] Manamune Ryze's spells are such short cooldowns that he will rarely auto attack, especially within late game, whats the point in enhancing a stat you wont use optimally, really not worth the trouble [imgsmall=items/rod-of-ages.png] Rod of Ages An alternative to constructing Banshees veil, however I feel as though it isnt damage efficient and the AP scaling isnt worth the trouble, if you purchase this it also leaves a massive gap in Ryze's magic defense which will get him killed once the enemy detects this [imgsmall=items/zhonyas-hourglass.png] Zhonyas Hourglass From frozen heart and banshees veil you should have all the defensive requirements to stay alive, also since Ryze's cooldowns are quite short and he is quite mobile, I feel as though this item will just shunt his damage and capabilities within team fights, a very niche item for him
Standard Setup: Reds / Marks: Magic Pen Yellows / Seals: Mana per level Blues / Glyphs: Mana per level Purples / Quints: Move quints [imgext=http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/3194/ryzerunesmana.png] My default Ryze setup, since a majority of his items offer defensive stats, I don’t feel that gaining defensive runes is essential, and the extra mana you gain boosts your damage even more. Now with quints you can run flat or per level mana and even magic pen, but I prefer the extra movespeed as Ryze is a medium ranged mage who needs to keep moving while dishing his spells out to be really effective, outrunning people early on is deceptively helpful. I can only utilize this setup if I know my rival laner cannot out poke me, as several times people will pick characters such as Pantheon and Mordekaiser to poke you out of the lane before you gain your Tear and Catalyst. Magic Resistance Defensive Setup: Reds / Marks: Magic Pen Yellows / Seals: Mana Per level Blues / Glyphs: Flat Magic Resistance Purples / Quints: Move Quints [imgext=http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9752/ryzerunesmres.png] The defensive setup which allows you to endure enemy mages within the laning phase that could out harass you, such as Karthus, Ahri and Cassiopeia, The extra magic resistance is deceptively potent, even after the minor nerf. You can switch the move quints for flat armor / magic resistance if you feel they are unnecessary, but most harass orientated champions have skill shots, the faster you move, the easier it is to dodge. Due to the recent change to Ryze’s ultimate offering a flat bonus move speed when activated, I feel move quints are the most dominant quint type for him, as his strength lies in consistently barraging the enemy into oblivion while staying on the move. Armor Defensive Setup: Reds / Marks: Magic Pen Yellows / Seals: Armor Blues / Glyphs: Mana Per Level Purples / Quints: Move Quints [imgext=http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/2678/ryzerunesarmor.png]
Here is where Ryze really struggles to kill anything by himself, whereas other mages can gut people with a full combo, Ryze relies on slowly wearing them down, although his harassment at this point is deceptively strong, he cannot sustain the damage for too long as my build focuses on stronger power for later, my key focus at this point is just to survive and farm, I will only score kills in conjunction with a jungler or if my rival makes too many mistakes, just stay calm and farm, harass enemies sparingly and save your mana for more opportune times, if you are offered blue buff, take it, it will allow you to force your enemies out of lane much easier, as your burst can be sustained for a prolonged time. Typical Item Set: [imgsmall=items/tear-of-the-goddess.png][imgsmall=items/catalyst-the-protector.png][imgsmall=items/boots-of-speed.png]
At this point you should have your catalyst, tear, boots and glacial shroud / negatron cloak at the least, meaning you are quite beefy in comparison to other mages, while being able to shred your enemies into pieces, I personally prefer to clear minion waves with my ult and then go roaming, Ryze becomes a potent assassin as no one really can outrun him for long. Ensuring your CS is still strong while being able to control the map alongside your allies, contributing to dragon kills is essential at this point, and do your best to poke your rivals into hell before they can compete against you. Typical Item Set: [imgsmall=items/tear-of-the-goddess.png][imgsmall=items/catalyst-the-protector.png][imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png][imgsmall=items/hextech-revolver.png][imgsmall=items/negatron-cloak.png][imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png]
Here is Ryzes strongest point, you have reached the pinnacle of bruiser-maginess and your enemies are generally horrified about fighting you 1v1, your main goals here are to butcher your foes before a fight starts and restrict them from killing your teams AD carry, you will be filling in the role of frontline / support, being in a position to burst any target while able to run in and out of the fray, although Ryze is resilient he is no means immortal, you should always be aware of when your enemies can switch to you and amply prepare according to the situation, and with the introduction of move speed within your ultimate, it should be less likely to be pinned down by enemy characters. Typical Item Set: [imgsmall=items/archangels-staff.png][imgsmall=items/banshees-veil.png][imgsmall=items/sorcerers-shoes.png][imgsmall=items/will-of-the-ancients.png][imgsmall=items/frozen-heart.png][imgsmall=items/void-staff.png]
Although I list it in every guide of mine, positioning and keeping on the move will drastically help your killing and survivability capabilities, as Ryze has limited range in comparison to characters such as Ziggs or Lux, he needs to be in the fray at a dead zone for enemy melee characters, toying with them on a mental scale. The dead zone is the range where you can utilize all your spells on the enemy, where they cannot deal damage in return, as long as you keep a majority of melee characters at max range, you’ll find yourself winning a majority of skirmish fights. How limited your power is early game, whereas other top tier mages can literally ultimate and score a kill at level 6, Ryze pales in comparison, he relies on staying on a target for a set time to kill people, however this by no means is a weakness when you mix him in with a cc orientated jungler, as very few mages can overcome his consistent dps. Ryzes strength lies within his innate item based durability and rapid poking capabilities, which means he out classes several mages within the mid and late game. Spell combos, Ryze although he is very simplistic, how you dish out your spells will utilize your passive to its best effect, and when you use them correctly your burst and poke capabilities are insane, follow the combos I have listed in the ‘combo’ section and you’ll realise a drastic increase in your nukes.
Although it is a personal preference, utilizing ‘smart keys’ allows you to utterly dominate enemy mages as it reduces the amount of input time to cast your spells, say if you was playing Brand, and you were going to use all of your spells including your ignite, without smart keys that would take up to 10 actions to cast them all, (2 actions per spell to select target to cast on) whereas smart casting would reduce the input to 5 actions, which of course if you are going to be silenced by a character such as Kassadin, you can dish out your spells before that silence hits, it is an amazing function and should not be overlooked. Farming early game, Ryze although decent at this point is by no means a sustain or mana intensive hero, scoring at least 90% of the creep kills before you go on a killing rampage is ESSENTIAL to being a successful mid laner. The richer you are, the stronger and more influence you have on the game, it’s just like real life, but with LAZORS!
Hopefully you have learnt how and why Ryze is played in similar formats within higher levels of play, and I hope you enjoyed reading this massive exert for the most blue skinned mage out there, I hope you had fun and didnt find this offensive or inappropriate in any way, feel free to leave a like and a comment and I shall see you around on the fields of justice.
