Malphite is mostly played like a tank, since he scales with armor. Recently i have seen the Russian team, Moscow Five, run an aoe based team comp with a tanky ap Malphite top lane. At first i thought it was a bad idea, but then i took a look at the numbers. Malphite's Q has an 0.6 ap ratio, which is kinda low. However the base damage on that thing is insane, so it will deal good damage all game. His ult is something else. It has the best CC mechanic in the game and it also has a 1.0 ap ratio! This is why you build AP. Malphite in action: (Watch 22:44 to see what he is capable of)

[title] Passive: Granite Shield[/title] [number]Malphite is shielded by a layer of rock which absorbs damage up to 10% of his maximum health. If he has not been hit for 10 seconds, this effect recharges. [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] Pretty good passive. Helps against early game harass. Also helps against poke-comps. [title] Q: Seismic Shard[/title] [number]Deals 70 / 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 (+60% of ability power) magic damage and steals 14 / 17 / 20 / 23 / 26% movement speed from the target for 4 seconds. Cooldown 8seconds Cost 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90mana Range 625[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] I love this spell. It allows you to chase the enemy like a madman. Use this on the enemy jungler when you get ganked, it will help alot. In lane, you want to spam this as much as possible on your opponent. The reason to max this first is because of the base damages and the slow %. Also because it scales with AP. [title] W: Brutal Strikes[/title] [number]Passive: Malphite's attacks hit units near his target for 30 / 38 / 46 / 54 / 62% of his attack damage. Active: Increase Malphite's armor and attack damage 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 6 seconds. Cooldown 14 seconds Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This spell is kinda meh, unless you are building full armor-tank. In my guide we do not focus on buidling armor. Use it when you wanna push your lane quick or kill the enemy turret. Late game it will give a pretty decent amount of armor. Max this last. [title] E: Ground Slam[/title] [number]Malphite slams the ground dealing 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+50% of his Armor) magic damage to surrounding enemies, reducing their attack speed by 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% for 4 seconds. Cooldown 7 seconds Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana Range 400[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This spell is also kinda meh on AP Malphite, since it scales on armor. However, the AS debuff is still very good, and the damage is good in lane, so dont forget to use it! [title] R: Unstoppable Force[/title] [number]Malphite charges towards the target area, dealing 200 / 300 / 400 (+100% of ability power) magic damage and knocking enemies into the air for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds. Cooldown 130 / 115 / 100 / 110seconds Cost 100mana Range 1000[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This ulti is devistating. When you get some AP, you can take 50% of a carrys life with this spell alone! Knock up is also the best CC in the game, since it tenacity and cleanse does not do anything against it.

Runes are also flexible. The one i tend to use the most is my tanky-ap page. [imgext=http://i.imgur.com/AoXfU.jpg] Other good options: Quints: [.]Movement Speed. These will synergize greatly with your Q. [.]Armor. I would use these if im against a rather tough AD lane. Seals: [.]Armor. The best yellows imo. [.]Mp/5 or Mp/5 per lvl. These will greatly help your Q spamming. You should only use these against an AP lane. Glyphs: [.]Ap/lvl. These are very solid glyphs, a great choice against an AD lane. [.]Mp/5. They do not give alot of mana regen, but they can help your early game abit. I do not feel like there are any other options for your marks, mpen is always a good choice.

Your item build is very flexible imo. My core is usually: Get [imgsmall=items/sunfire-cape.png] first against physical damage.. Get [imgsmall=items/abyssal-scepter.png] first against magic damage. I get two or three Dorans Rings to help me in lane. They give me damage, health and most importantly mana regeneration. After i have my Abyssal Scepter and Sunfire Cape, i usually build to counter the enemy team. If i want armor and damage, i go for Zhonyas Hourglass. If i want more magic resist and damage, i go for Lich Bane. I tend to build damage if my team is doing good/is even. If we need more tankiness in fights, i sometimes just spam armor. A item you always wanna consider: It makes up for the lack of tankyness you sometimes need. Ult + the active afterwards will allow your team to come in time. Strong items on Malphite: Why no[imgsmall=items/rod-of-ages.png]? Because its not worthwhile. The time it takes to get and charge it is not worth it. There are better items for Malphite. Why always [imgsmall=items/abyssal-scepter.png] + [imgsmall=items/sunfire-cape.png]? Because they synergize greatly with the role you have. You wanna ult into the face of the enemy team. Sunfire Cape gives damage to your E, and also damage just for standing next to the enemy. Which you will be doing after you have ulted. Abyssal Scepter is just a good item imo. It gives you tankyness (which you need) and helps out your own AP Carry.

Malphite is very flexible in lane. Once you are lvl6 and have some Dorans Rings, you should be able to win all trades. I try to keep my opponent in 2 different categories: Sustain lanes and Non-sustain lanes. Malphite should be able to kill all non-sustain lanes, because they cannot withstand the power of q spam. (Wukong is a prime example) Champions with a spammable shield are tough for Malphite (Riven and Udyr) Against heavy auto attacking champs like Trynd and Fiora, consider maxing E first. It will remove all of their damage.

Your playstyle in lane is pretty simple. You should try to deny your opponent with Q spam while last hitting yourself. Once you get lvl5 (lvl 3 Q) spam Q CONSTANTLY. When you get lvl6, you should be able to kill your opponent if your Q spam was successful. If you cannot kill your lane, push it and go for a gank @ mid lane. You can also try to assist your jungler secure an enemy buff. In team fights you wanna play like an assassin/initiator. With some AP, you can dive the enemy carries and kill them in a matter of seconds. You dont HAVE to hit the whole team with your ult, hitting the ad carry + support is also very good. Your playstyle should be abit like Warwick. Spam Q on your opponent, until [imgsmall=skills/malphite/r.png][imgsmall=summoners/ignite.png] can kill them.

Early game you should focus on farming. You cannot spam Q before you have 2-3 Dorans Rings. But once you have, you should just Q ALL THE TIME. Once they are low enough go for a full combo on them. You have ALOT of burst @ lvl6, try to abuse it!

Mid game is all about dragon / buff control. Usually you should engage the fights. When you have Abyssal Scepter + Sunfire Cape you will able to do so. ALWAYS aim for the carries. If you see the enemy ap and ad carry next to each other, go for a full combo on them. You should be able to instakill atleast on of them. Note: You do not NEED to hit the whole enemy team with your ult, you should use it to snipe carries.

At this point, you will still be a monster. Your combo will still instagib a carry. Try to force fights at Baron. If the enemy try to deny just ult on top of them. Malphite is really strong at Baron fights, abuse it!

I hope you learned something from my guide. I believe Malphite is an extremely strong champion, but people need to understand you can build him in many different ways. I am by no means a high rated player, but i think i have a very good understanding about how this game works. Thanks for reading! Feedback and questions are always welcome!
