Welcome to my guide to AP mid Zilean; this guide will go over the basic and advanced mechanics of Zilean to help both newer and more experienced players. Zilean is a unique AP champion as 2 of his abilities can be argued for Zilean to fill the support role over AP carry. I do not recommend support Zilean and I will explain in the skills section why he is best suited as an AP carry. Listed below are the main pros and cons of Zilean. [highlight]AP per level Glyphs[/highlight] will add to Zilean's damage and utility later in the game. [highlight]Flat AP Quintessences[/highlight] will boost Zilean's early game damage, rounding out a very standard rune page. After 4 seconds this bomb will detonate, dealing 90 / 145 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+90% of ability power) magic damage to all surrounding enemies. Cooldown 10 seconds Cost 70 / 85 / 100 / 115 / 130 mana Range 700 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] An annoying long ranged ability; use this in lane to harass your opponent or push the lane if need be. I max this first as it is my main source of damage. Some players may run to their creeps after you cast a bomb on them, making you push your lane and make you more open for a gank. Cooldown 18 / 15 / 12 / 9 / 6seconds Cost 50mana Range 600[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] One of Zilean's signature abilities, use this to bring your ult up faster or to "double-bomb your opponent for large amounts of damage. This ability is what makes Zilean so powerful with Blue Buff. I max this second to keep my abilities available quicker and improve my laning power. [title][img=skills/zilean/e.png] E: Time Warp[/title] [number]Zilean slows an enemy champion's movement speed or increases an allied champion's movement speed by 55% for 2.5 / 3.25 / 4 / 4.75 / 5.5 seconds. Cooldown 20seconds Cost 80mana Range 700[/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] A very strong utility ability, Zilean players can use this to escape or chase an enemy with both functions for either situation. Use this in team fights on your initiator. Note: Sometimes it may be more beneficial to slow down an opponent rather than speed your self up. Speeding up a teammate that is able to stun or disable is also viable. [title][img=skills/zilean/r.png] R: Chrono Shift[/title] [number]Marks the target with a protective time rune for 7 seconds. If the target would take lethal damage, they are instead transported back in time regaining 600 / 850 / 1100 (+200% of ability power) of their health. Cooldown 180 / 160 / 140 seconds Cost 125 / 150 / 175 mana Range 900 [/number] [title]Explanation:[/title] This ability makes Zilean exceptionally hard to kill at level 6. It is useful throughout the entire game and is annoying to fight against. Building lots of AP will increase the HP someone is revived with, which is why it's important to build AP on Zilean. Use this just before your or a teammate's death to bait the enemy as much as possible. It is also appropriate to type "CLOCK BLOCKED!" after saving someone with your ultimate.

[img=champ/ahri.png] [highlight]Ahri[/highlight] Just dodge her Q's and counter with a time bomb. [img=champ/anivia.png] [highlight]Anivia[/highlight] Don't get hit by her combo early on or it will be hard to come back. [img=champ/annie.png] [highlight]Annie[/highlight] Time bomb her every time she goes in for an ability, but try not to get combo'd by her. [img=champ/brand.png] [highlight]Brand[/highlight] Try to avoid his pillar of flame if going in for a time bomb. [img=champ/cassiopeia.png] [highlight]Cassiopeia[/highlight] A real pain to lane against; don't get zoned by her poison and obtain blue early to control the lane. [img=champ/fizz.png] [highlight]Fizz[/highlight] He can dodge your time bomb damage with Playful/Trickster so be careful when deciding to harass. [img=champ/galio.png] [highlight]Galio[/highlight] Not much to do here, just farm your lane and call out MIA in case he tries to gank a side lane. [img=champ/gragas.png] [highlight]Gragas[/highlight] Save Time Warp for if you get ulted back into him or his tower. Abuse his melee range by employing the double bomb onto caster minion strategy. [img=champ/heimerdinger.png] [highlight]Heimerdinger[/highlight] You can bomb his turrets to damage him or nearby creeps if desired. Stay at least 3 creeps away from him to avoid his rockets. [img=champ/karthus.png][highlight]Karthus[/highlight] Avoid his Q's and time bomb him early to win the lane. Remember to save your mana to revive yourself if he channels his ultimate on you. [img=champ/kassadin.png] [highlight]Kassadin[/highlight] Really tough to lane against; try to get a time bomb off on him before he silences you. An early Philosopher Stone may be a good option so you can sustain in lane easier. [img=champ/katarina.png] [highlight]Katarina[/highlight] She will harass you early with Bouncing Blades so just counter with Time Bombs and use Time Warp or Chronoshift to survive her ultimate if it will kill you. [img=champ/kennen.png] [highlight]Kennen[/highlight] Stay behind your creeps so he cant poke you. Use Time Warp on him if he ults so he cannot cover much ground to deal damage. [img=champ/leblanc.png] [highlight]Leblanc[/highlight] Use time bomb to harass early and use your ultimate before she starts her combo if you don't think you can survive it. Her burst will be high and she will silence you so make sure you have it on before that point. [img=champ/malzahar.png] [highlight]Malzahar[/highlight] He pushes easily and can dish out a lot of damage at level 6. If you see him go aggressive at level 6 and start spamming all his abilities, use your ult before he silences you to revive yourself in case he kills you. [img=champ/mordekaiser.png] [highlight]Mordekaiser[/highlight] He can push and his shield protects him from time bomb harass. Just use time bombs to farm the minions he will have pushed to your tower and he shouldn't be able to kill you once you reach level 6. [img=champ/morgana.png] [highlight]Morgana[/highlight] She will spam her puddle to free farm the lane and block your slow and damage with black shield. Just farm your lane. [img=champ/orianna.png] [highlight]Orianna[/highlight] Dodging her abilities should be relatively easy, just harass with time bomb and farm. [img=champ/ryze.png] [highlight]Ryze[/highlight] Harass early on with time bomb and don't let him get fed. [img=champ/sion.png] [highlight]Sion[/highlight] Blue is required to beat this lane; double bombing and auto attacking are the only ways to destroy his shield and keep him from roaming. You can also counter his push by using bombs on the creeps as well, but it wont counter his roaming as hard. [img=champ/swain.png] [highlight]Swain[/highlight] Swain can deal deadly amounts of DoT damage early game. Don't get caught in his nevermove and you should be fine. [img=champ/twistedfate.png] [highlight]Twisted Fate[/highlight] Dodging wild cards is easy enough in the lane. Try to double bomb or slow him while hes porting, it may damage or kill a nearby ally of his or prevent him from chasing when the port finishes. [img=champ/veigar.png] [highlight]Veigar[/highlight] Harass with time bomb early on but watch out for his burst combo when he hits level 6. Employ the same strategy as against Leblanc where you use your ult early to survive his combo. [img=champ/viktor.png] [highlight]Viktor[/highlight] Avoid the poking from death ray and bomb him when his shield is down. [img=champ/vladimir.png] [highlight]Vladimir[/highlight] Just farm your lane and avoid fighting him head to head; his sustain will keep him in the lane unless you have blue buff and can spam time bombs all day. [img=champ/xerath.png] [highlight]Xerath[/highlight] Avoid moving in straight lines to dodge his Q's. Double bomb him if you catch him in siege mode and use Time Warp to avoid his ultimate if he uses it. [img=champ/ziggs.png] [highlight]Ziggs[/highlight] Don't cluster up with your creeps or he will just spam Q on you. Use time warp to avoid his ultimate and harass with time bomb when able. [img=champ/zilean.png] [highlight]Zilean[/highlight] Harass your admirer with time bomb and use your ultimate if you think a time bomb will kill you. Mainly just farm your lane.

Starting Items: Standard: [img=items/boots-of-speed.png][img=items/health-potion3.png] Against [img=champ/leblanc.png][img=champ/veigar.png]: [img=items/null-magic-mantle.png][img=items/health-potion2.png] -> [img=items/chalice-of-harmony.png][img=items/mercurys-treads.png] Against [img=champ/kassadin.png][img=champ/cassiopeia.png]: [img=items/regrowth-pendant.png][img=items/health-potion.png] -> [img=items/philosophers-stone.png][img=items/mercurys-treads.png] Start off with your items and head into your jungle if your jungler requires a leash. If leashing wolves or wraiths, just auto attack after the jungler has hit them. For Blue or Red buff, you auto attack it first and then cast a bomb on it to help damage it. In lane, last hit minions as normal and throw a time bomb onto your lane opponent whenever your mana is about full to put those runes and masteries to use. If you wish to get more aggressive on your opponent, bomb a caster minion, use rewind and then bomb the same minion for a "double bomb". The caster minions will have the lowest magic resistance and will deal the most damage to your enemy. Note: this will push your lane really fast if you use this strategy frequently; only use it if you plan on pushing your lane, setting up for a kill, or scaring your opponent away. Go back at 1875 gold to buy [img=items/dorans-ring.png][img=items/catalyst-the-protector.png][img=items/sight-ward.png] At level 6 you will be very hard to kill unless you are pushed up to far or tower dove by mid and their jungler. Play smart and remember to save at least 205 mana at all times to use [img=skills/zilean/r.png] and [img=skills/zilean/e.png] for escaping. Using your ultimate, communicate with your teammates to organize early game tower dives at top or bottom lane. As always, make sure you have Time Warp up as well to escape a tower after reviving yourself or a teammate. Tower diving bot lane can open up strong Dragon opportunities for extra gold and can snowball your early game for an easy win. If their top lane is busy farming and your jungler assists you, a 4 man gank bot will be a surprise to the enemy and with such an easy chance to dive and escape they will have a hard time avoiding it. Use the picture below for the gank routes that are relatively safe while avoiding common ward locations. Red lines: Gank routes. At 15-20 minutes, you should have at least your completed boots and a Rod of Ages right now and be building into a Rabadon's Deathcap. [img=items/sorcerers-shoes.png][img=items/rod-of-ages.png] -> [img=items/rabadons-deathcap.png] + [img=items/void-staff.png] for raw damage or [img=items/abyssal-scepter.png] for damage/survivability. When more skirmished break out in mid game, make sure you are close by. Your abilities to revive and speed up/slow down targets are invaluable in team-fights to play more recklessly because you can revive teammates anyway. Your time bombs will also be useful to push lanes and deal AoE poke damage to enemy teams. Slowing down an enemy for your whole team to catch is better than speeding up one of your team. The exception to this is speeding up someone with CC on your team to disrupt the champion you are chasing down. Remember to coordinate attacks with your team; being able to revive and speed up your team allows you to make more reckless plays and decisions and come out on top. Zilean shines in those annoying stand-off situations where both teams dance back and forth looking for opportunities. You can choose to Time Warp an ally to initiate easily or catch an opponent off guard with a powerful slow. You may need to put Chronoshift on your initiator to win a fight before it starts, but it is best saved for when you or your AD carry are targeted. While you are able to bait enemies with your ultimate, they can just as easily bait it out of you. Make sure you put it on targets you KNOW will be focused or bursted down; make a situation where the opponents should have to focus the affected champion else they take more damage than it is worth to waste your ultimate.

[img=items/zhonyas-hourglass.png]/[img=items/guardian-angel.png] for survivability/against assassins [img=items/archangels-staff.png]/[img=items/abyssal-scepter.png] for AP/Utility [img=items/deathfire-grasp.png]/[img=items/void-staff.png] for raw damage/against tanks Your abilities are as useful as ever even in the latest stages of the game. If your AD carry has a Guardian's Angel that's just another revive if they need it. The best use of your ultimate is the use it on the enemy team's main target (your carries), or the initiator/tank they may have wasted most of their spells on. You should be able to continuously destroy waves of creeps with Time Bomb and be able to have a permanent Time Warp on somebody with Blue Buff regenerating your mana. At late stages in the game when everyone has full items, fights are more about skill and strategy than just being more powerful than them. Zilean contributes a lot to this as your ultimate and utility let you have the reckless playstyle that the other team can't afford to have.

Here is the short version of Zilean's job in team fights. [img=skills/zilean/q.png] Use Zilean's Time Bombs to damage the enemy team whenever possible. [img=skills/zilean/w.png] Use Rewind to keep your Time Bombs and Time Warp available. [img=skills/zilean/e.png] Use Time Warp to speed up your initiator to start the fight or use it on your teammates to help them escape. Also use this on their carries so they are easier to catch and kill as quickly as possible. [img=skills/zilean/r.png] Use your ultimate to revive your teammates to make the enemies abilities wasted. This ultimate should be casted early if they have strong burst casters such as Veigar or Leblanc.
