Caitlyn as a champion has traditionally been a long range ADC with excellent siege and lane bully potential.

In layman's terms, it means that her key strengths are in laning phase and pushing down towers. She has one of the highest base auto attack ranges in the entire game: only a late game Tristana, Kog'Maw with W activated, or mid-game Jinx in her Rocket Mode can outrange your auto attacks. As Caitlyn, you will be abusing your range advantage all game. In laning phase, you can stay out of range of most attacks and abilities while still being about to slowly potshot and chip away at the enemy bot lane's health bars. In teamfights, you can stay further in the back line and fight from safer positions. She's also very good at kiting (attacking enemies while moving in a way that leaves them unable to damage you) and shines in extended late game fights.

As of Patch 6.2, Caitlyn is one of the strongest AD Carry picks, especially with several buffs given to her coming into season 6. This guide will contain information on how to build Caitlyn, in addition to breaking down and talking about several lane matchups with general tips about how to play Caitlyn.

  1. If you push down their tower first, rotate top/mid and try to take those towers as well.
  2. If you lose your tower first, ward up and farm bottom and try to take that tower
  3. You're an objective focused ADC, so you want to try to help them out on things like Dragon
  4. Usually you want to make sure your wave is pushed when your team starts an objective
  5. Try to keep side lanes pushed while being present whenever teamfights or large skirmishes occur

Preferred Supports:

As a whole, Caitlyn’s largest vulnerability is getting all-inned and jungle ganks. Playing with a tanky support helps make up for this a lot, as they can soak up a lot of damage while trading, allow you to get more autos off due to extended trades, and most of them are very good at helping you disengage an all-in.

  1. You don’t ever want to pick Caitlyn into Braum because his shield can block your Q and Ulti, which is a lot of your power in lane phase.

(favourable for you)

  1. Stay out of his range and always try to poke him when he comes into CS
  2. You want to keep the lane even/slow push
  3. Try to only last hit and keep him off the wave
  4. If he shoves with Q, Q the wave as well
  5. If he dashes to Q you, you should EQ while he Qs because he self stuns

(you lose when he gets sheen)

  1. His autos are really fast and he pushes really hard
  2. He'll be able to Q auto trade you
  3. Poke him as much as possible early
  4. The only way you'll win is by a CS lead
  5. You completely lose at level 6, so just try to CS
  6. if he has package, be careful of an all-in; it's okay to sacrifice CS to live

  1. Prioritize hitting Kalista and getting her off the wave.
  2. You want to keep poking her and generate a creep advantage; she can't shove so you want to push
  3. You can't really hit her with a Q unless she's forced to play defensively and predictably (so like low hp)
  4. Beware the Level 6 all-in, make sure your support is in front of you and able to soak damage and CC
  5. You might be able to turn the all in with an EQ

  1. *Safest thing is to always shove the lane with Q.*Riskier thing but with greater payoff is to hit a champion with your Q as well (usually doing so puts you in a more vulnerable position)
  2. Don't try to stack up your headshot in bushes while early laning, because it leaves you vulnerable to minions attacking youIf you're trying to shove or fighting, then you can charge headshots in bush
  3. *You should almost always be able to safely get a headshot off if they pop a trap or walk into your E.* Put traps under people who are CC'd
  4. If the trap pops/net hits, it resets your auto-attack. Making a line of traps doesn't work that well in lane.
  5. In terms of warding. If you're pushing on them, ward riverif you're getting pushed on, put it in lane bushesUpgrade it to the blue version as soon as possible and use it ward the enemy jungle

Don't get baited by your burst damage

You might randomly get a huge burst while auto-attacking due to crits + headshot + firecannon, and while it may be tempting to flash in to finish off the target, this is generally a very poor idea.

You have a really hard time with flanks So try your best to be at max range in teamfights with allies around you while auto attacking.

  1. Play behind traps and don't make yourself vulnerable, your sustained damage is really strong.
  2. Caitlyn is also really good at kiting enemies, so use this to your advantage

If you manage to stay alive and keep auto attacking in a late game teamfight, there’s a very strong chance that your team will pull out ahead for the win.
