Bard is a high damage ranged support with a lot of mobility and roam potential.

He is a really strong character in general. He excels in not only lane phase, but skirmishes and teamfighting as well. Bard’s damage is extremely high as a support with his empowered autos from his passive, Q, and Thunderlord’s Decree which can result in chunking down a squishy character quite hard. Furthermore, all his spells provide a great amount of utility and allow you to peel quite well for any carry.

However, Bard is an extremely difficult champion to use effectively as all his offensive abilities move slowly and are quite telegraphed. Furthermore, he is a very squishy champion and can be caught and burst down very easily. This guide will contain information and tips on how to effectively play Bard.

Preferred AD Carries:

You want to go with a strong early game AD Carry to abuse your lane bully potential. Having a Lucian or Kalista can give you a lot of kill pressure which you can abuse to deny the enemy carry.

Avoid picking Bard into long range characters or high early game burst characters:

  1. Caitlyn/Lucian
  2. Thresh/Nautilus/Poppy/Alistar

Bard will do very well against shorter range and other melee characters such as:

Try to get as much damage on the ADC.

  1. Good times are when the enemy walks to last hit or when they've used a cooldown
  2. Be mindful of the wave when doing so, pulling aggro from a large wave can easily get you killed

If you can't damage the ADC, and you can get a winning trade with the other support, go for it.

  1. This would mean the ADC has no cds and is busy auto attacking something that isn't your lane partner

Most of the time, you'd be trying to track the enemy jungler.

  1. Make sure your ADC knows you're warding
  2. If you think the jungler is coming, put a ward out
  3. You should probably have a ward at around 3:30 if the enemy jungler starts bottom side
  4. If he starts top side, you should ward at 3 minutes
  5. You should ward when you're pushing 100% of the time

Be very mindful of your own position, if you’re even a single toe out of line you can easily die or lose a summoner.

Pick up chimes whenever you can while you're warding, or if you really need the mana, but don't go too far out.

When you base, and you have tier-2 boots, if you feel like there's going to be action around middle or bottom side river you should roam towards that direction to help out.

  1. However, if there isn’t going to be any action, roaming is a waste of time and you should go back to lane

If your mid laner needs vision, you can also quickly drop by and leave a ward before going back to lane

  1. Make sure you're safe, because the enemy jungler can kill you very easily
  2. You can grab chimes on your path to speed up this process

As a support, generally speaking, you want to provide vision to your winning lanes so they can pressure and avoid ganks.

Based on your information from vision, try to be with teammates who you think will get aggressed on so you can help save them from death.

  1. Try to peel for your AD Carries using Q and your autos.
  2. Help your teammates kite and heal them using W.
  3. In a teamfight, you can use your ult to zone out the enemy front line or back line depending on what the situation is. It can also force another enemy player into a very bad position.
  4. Another way to use your ultimate is to start a teamfight or disengage from one. To start one, you want to ult a squishy low mobility target or targets that your team can quickly close in on. To stop one, you just want to hit as many enemies as possible.
  5. Your E is a very good escape tool for if a teamfight is going poorly. You can use it to bait enemies away, but this is unlikely Remember to time your Q to hit enemies following you through the portal for a free bind.
